COmputoman
I swapped a engine from a manual 280zx 2+2 into my Auto late 260z a while back ago. After some time I now have started to get a rattle upon acceleration. I was thinking that it might be the flywheel bolts backing out and rattling with the circular washer that the flybolts go through before they enter the autoflywheel and then into the crank. After looking at a thread I noticed that manual trans Zs have a bushing in the end of the crank. Is it possible that because i never removed this before installing the flywheel it could have fallen loose and made noise? here is a picture of the back of the 280 engine before I bolted on the automatic flywheel. P.S. I will be installing the manual from the ZX pretty soon once I buy a clutch kit. If nothing comes out of this thread I will have to get to bottom of this the hard way . AK-Z
I don't think that would be the issue normally. Doesn't hurt to replace it. its like $5 PS. pilot bushing is the same for all Zs (240z-350z) and 240sx.
COmputoman
Well since I was mating the engine with an auto trans there was no shaft to hold that bushing in.
proxlamus©
from my memory .. the aluminum "flexplate" or flywheel should have a spacer behind it which allows the transmission input shaft to fit into. So it should go in the following order... Engine crank > aluminum spacer/adapter > flexplate > torque converter. The pilot bushing supports and stabilizes the input shaft from the manual transmission. do you still have that spacer?
COmputoman
i did set it up the other way Engine>crank>Flexplate>Washer/spacer>Bolts>Torque converter>Tranny. I was talking to someone else and they had me under the impression it might be the way you were saying proxlamus. Is there anyone out there to confirm this? Thanks Ben
AK-Z
I haven't cracked open my l28/auto before. I guess I check On my KA/auto. the spacers was on the torque converter side of the setup, but that has a "auto pilot bushing", unlike the l28. COmputoman
I might be mistaken.. I'm just trying to recall from my memory.. and I let my manager borrow my damn FSM.. uh oh Something tells me i did it wrong :cry2: oh well. Ive been driving my car for about 4 or 5 months like that so far and the only issues are rattle and a flywheel grind a few times. Ben Edit: I am reading through the FSM off of xenons site. I cant find a section explaining mounting the flex plate, or anything about the spacer for that matter.
COmputoman
I think I have found info explaining where the spacer is supposed to go. This site was explaining it for a 300zx. http://www.importpartspro.com/ni30oemauflp1.html
jtmny1999
Spacer goes before the flexplate.
COmputoman
Spacer goes before the flexplate. In what direction are you speaking of? should that spacer be touching the crank? sorry if the thread is seeming to be redundant. Ben
proxlamus©
"The Nissan 300zx OEM Automatic Flex Plate Spacer is the spacer that goes between the Automatic transmission flex plate and the mounting bolts." Judging by the picture.. and the direction of the bolt.. and the description.. it should go.. engine > flexplate > spacer > bolt > torque converter
COmputoman
Well I guess that solves it! Im pretty sure while installing I would have noticed where the thing goes just by looking for the signs of a bolt biting down on it. Thanks for the clarification help though guys.
