What do i have to do to get a Ford 9" rear end into a 280z? Do i need to take it to a shop, and if so does it cost alot? Please dont tell me how much the 280 rear can hold, I am pretty set on getting a new rear end, and i am wondering how much work or money is necessary for a ford nine. I need a ford nine because i am doing a 383 stroker with a supercharger running 6psi of boost.

first measure the old rear end width from mounting plate to mounting plate on the wheels then look here.

try and find one that has a similar width, or at least a good source for a donor rear, heres other info you may need

Gettting the correct width rear for your car and tire combo is the beginning. How you want to mount it is another story! I have just finished back-halfing a 1983 280ZX and it is quite a bit of work but the results are exciting! You could get away with leaving the stock floor in place and positioning mounts and roll cage/structural members within the stock body, in this fashion the car will actually fit a 12.5 X 30 MT ET Street tire with minor tub notching. I elected for the complete "hack out all the floor from the seats back and start over" approach for maximum strenght as the car is getting a 509 big block up front. To see how things are coming check out: streetlegalmonthly and go to the project car section.

Now that is going extreme on a 280zx car for sure. I have often thought of doing just that to the car, but what stopped me was I wanted to keep it as origional as possible and still get the performance out of it. With a setup like that, if you link the front to hte back correctly you should be able to pot some real power through the car and turn some killer times. Are you planning on running this on the street much? A good tin knocker should be able to seal up the rear again. I think the viper guy sure would be surprised. It would be rally cool to run a 800-900 hp engine and hide it under the hood, never happen tho, but then again it sure would look killer with a good blower with a good injection system instaled. What about blown, fuel injected with NOS, to killer. Get a good automatic behind the engine and some 390 gears and you will be a real adversary on the track. I dont think the honda guys would be very interested in running you LOL. That is a really cool start on a real drag 280zx car. have fun with it. 2thumbs.gif
