A/T center console options.

Recommended Posts

Im curious what some of you gentlemen have done about retaining the center console with an A/T. Im looking at either a turbo 350 or a 700r4 and I would love to have a "stock" looking interior and not some abusive and aggressive looking set ups.

Could anyone suggest what parts I would need to comply to accomplish this or if its even do able? More details (and pictures) the better, Im new to datsuns and sbc's so I fall into the "noob" category.

Thanks!

Welcome, I am just finishing up what you are looking to do. It's not to hard. I'm using a 400 trans in nine.

The trans lever should be pointing up on the trans to give more room for your big exhaust. You will need a steel rod from homedepot about three feet long (trim later).

I needed a cheep dual carb link kit to use on the lower shifter lever. This will join the rod to the shifter.

On the shifter you are going to take the retaining pin off of the shifter. Remove the lower lever and flip it to now face the driver side. Drill a new hole for the retaning pin, making sure that it has a tight fit to elinimate play.

Now for the hard part.

Istall the shifter. Attach the shifter rod to trans (I bent nine like a hood rod to link it to the trans lever). Run the shifter rod throu the shifter lever(carb link), put trans and shifter in park. Tighten adjusting screw on shift lever.

Now go throw all the gears and with a marker mark all the points on the shifter gate that each gear falls on. P,R, N, shoud be close, in my case I had to make a half gate for 1,2,3, then weld it to the stock shifter.

I will try to get some pics today. good luck.:burnout:

Mine might qualify as an aggressive looking set up.... dunno...

The shifter is a B&M prostick attached to a 700r4. I, too, wanted something stock looking. I managed to hide most of the shifer under the stock manual shift boot and used the ring that originally held down the rubber shift boot as a base that I welded a center section to and bolted the shifter to that. I melted/molded a small protion of the center console to allow the cable to pass through freely (hardly noticable if done carefully).

I made a small slit for the reverse lockout lever(red lever in first pic) to pass through.

You'd be surprised how many people mistake it for a manual transmission. Probably partly cause I left the clutch pedal in and ziptied it to the firewall.(I plan to go manual trans eventaully.

lazycat, thats exactly what i was looking for! right click and save, thank you so much. Now I need to find some OEM A/T stuff.

280zcar, i love your set up also. Something along the lines of what you did will be my back up if I cant find the parts to run a set up like lazy's.

Thanks guys!

Almost forgot, the neutral safety and backup light switches will be mounted on the passenger side of the sifter like 280zcar has.

Thanks for the photos. But I have a question about the geometry. My transmission is 2004 5.3 Truck version of the 700R4. I understand the Park position to be at 8:00 o clock and the selector arm moves backward to about 5:00 pm for L1.

I note that your photo shows the select lever is mounted on the bottom arc. Is your PRNDL sequence reversed to LDNRP at the shifter?

No not at the shifter, but by mounting the trans lever facing up at the trans.

I should have taken the fifth pic to show that, saw that question coming. You can see how it's mounted on the forth pic.

When you do this P will be at 2:00 o clock and L1 at about 11:00 o clock.

My trans is P,R,N,1,2,3 full manual valve body.

Hope that helps.

On the switches, I'll be working on them this week and try to post some pics.

No not at the shifter, but by fliping the trans lever to face up. Now Park will be at 2:00 o clock and shift forward to about 11:00 o clock for L1.

I should have shown that on the fifth and sixed pic, sorry saw that question coming. You can however see it on the trans the way it should be on the forth pic. My trans is P,R,N,1,2,3, with a full manual valve body.

On the neutral and backup switches. I'll be working on then this week and try to get some pics by the weekend.

On mine i used all stock nissan parts including the linkage under the car except the lever on the tranny. The lever on the tranny was made from scratch to get the hole position in the right place. It takes a little tinkering but that's all. I started out with a Turbo 350 and now have a 2004R. The only difference between the two was some minor linkage adjustment under the car. I also flipped the lever arm on the bottom of the shifter to the driver side like previously posted.

Hey guys, I am finished with the backup light and neutral safety switch. The backup light is the michroswitch on the passenger side. The neutral safety is on the front.

It all fits under the stock console.

The bolts that hold the T-handle are drilled and taped for bigger bolts to give a more positive feel. This shifter now feels rock solid.
