HICKL
I have a 76 280 with R200 rear end. How can I tell what my gear ratio is without disasembly? Can anyone guess at what they "typically" are? I am trying to plan out my 350 installation. I have access to a T350 tranny for cheap, but am afraid that I will be turning way too many R's. Want to be a daily driver. Any advice welcome Jeff
Guest Pegasus76
If you have the stock gears in your R200, you should be running 75 MPH at about 3rpms or so...?
HICKL
That sounds about right, but what ratio is stock?
auxilary
typical configuration was 3.545:1 for manual, and sometimes 3.9:1 for automatics, but i think that was fairly rare. easier way is chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, put it in neutral, mark the driveshaft, and count how many turns it makes in comparison to 1 full rotation of the rear wheels. ie. if the driveshaft makes 3.5 turns to rear wheel making 1 full turn, the ratio is 3.5:
Pop N Wood
Just make sure both wheels move together. An other way is to only lift one rear wheel off the ground then see how many turns of the tire are needed to turn the drive shaft one full turn then divide that number by two.
