Guest Anonymous
General question. My buddy's 454 Big block threw a connecting rod. Somehow it did not damage the cylinder/block. The mechanic who fixed it, went in and tore apart the engine. and replaced the rod and one rod bearing 'ONLY'. Supposedly everything else was checked and spec'ed out ok, so that's all he changed out. Engine had 130k miles on it and I would think that full rebuild was in order. Is is a good practice to just replace parts that dont spec out and not replace crank bearings, piston rings on all pistons, oil pump etc? Guest Anonymous
If you got it out and apart, seems to me I would have atleast done rings and bearings.
Guest Anonymous
How much you wanna spend? Money for a couple parts or the whole wad on it all when it may not need it ("aint broke don't fix it"). The important part was the mechanic right in going for the small fix?? Judgement call ???? maybe it will work maybe not/
denny411
I personally would have AT LEAST changed all of the bearings, timing set, oil pump, and rear main seal while I was there. That would be cheap insurance for what the parts and a little more labor would be.
fl327
ditto what denny said, if its worth pulling out of the car, its worth making sure it goes another 100k by replacing the innards, it had to be dismantled anyway..........
Mudge
If your yanking it out you may as well due it, but yes you can use the old stuff if its still ok.
