JelmerPatrol
I put a 280zx dizzy with E12-80 module on my L28 that had points but I coudn't get it running. It was trying but it coudn't hold it. I used the plate that was underneed my old dizzy on the ZX dizzy and used a coil from an BMW with electronic ignition. What did I do wrong? josh817
You can use the same coil from your old setup, any12v coil for that matter. You have to make sure you wired up your E12-80 module properly too. If you can't get it resolved I'm fixing to sell my setup (coil, HEI module, dizzy) all wired up ready to go if you need it, cheap. rejracer
Jelmer, did you properly connect the harness to the coil? Get a timing light on it and have someone help you crank it, or just leave it on the on position, and use a remote starter switch while you check the timing. On my L24 point system what I found was that I was only getting voltage to the coil in the "on" position. While cranking there was no voltage to the coil. I had to connect both original + leads to the coil to get the system to spark while in both Run and Start. This was for a 72 240z. I am not sure if the patrol is the same wiring or not, especially since it's an 84. In a nutshell: ensure you have voltage to the coil in both start and crank, and then check the spark output by pulling the lead at the coil and holding the lead approx 15mm from the coil secondary connection, and if good, check the timing. When in doubt concerning the wiring, use jumper wires to ensure you have voltage to the coil and a ground to the dist. Josh, the old point systems ran a resistor inline, this reduced the voltage to the coil by about 6v with the key in the on position. This means that the old coil (assuming it's off a point system) will work for a short while on the new system, and then burn up. On point systems the coil gets a full 12v on startup only, via another wire. In the on position it's a 6v system. I don't know if the BMW coil will work. josh817
I know it ran a resistor. Cranking it sent 12v through, on the "on/run" position it sent the voltage through the resistor. I am using a 280ZXT coil from my old turbo setup, when you switch over to electronic dizzy's you toss the resistor and short the "start" and the "on/run" wires together so you get 12v for crank AND for running, makes a hotter spark. Look at the schematics in the link, you'll see what I'm talking about. The HEI module takes the place of the IC ignition box (E12-80 thing) and you hook it up about the same. HEI module has 4 prongs to hook up to rather than the 2 on the IC module.
