deja
These racks hate me! I took the car out today for a cruise. I got about 100 yards up the street and the front end started to shake horribly. I've felt that before when I bought my new rack so I knew what it was. Sure enough when I jacked the car up I could move the driver's side wheel in and out and see the inner tierod moving into the rack. This time I tore it all apart (see pict). I was able to move the "locking nut" in enough to take care of the movement. This rack has been on the car for several thousand miles. My question is how is this happening? Did the people I bought these new racks leave something out that's suppose to lock everything in place? It looked like the "locking nut" was piened (spelling) but there was no evidence of piening (spelling) on the part it locks against. There is a washer sort of part behind the locking nut but that will simply slide along the threads. I am supposed to drive to Mississippi this weekend but am worried about this rack at this point. Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening again would be appreciated.
deja
Update: Well this is interesting. This is a pict of the steering rack out of the 280Z factory manual. Part #6 appears to be a spring. I did not see a spring when I took mine apart. This just might be my problem. I really could use an opinion here if anyone has knowledge of the 280Z rack. NZeder
I have not pulled apart my Zed rack but I have pulled a part a UK Mark II Escort rack and they are the same design and they have the spring in the end of the rack - then the bushing then the rack end. The Escort guys replace the plastic bush with a brass/metal unit as an upgrade. So I would say yes the spring is needed and is missing from your rack - this would keep some tension on the bush and ensure it up against the rack ends ball. deja
Thanks. I have someone taking apart a 240Z rack, should be the same as my 280Z, and will send me the spring. I'm also contacting the people I bought this "rebuilt rack" from to see what's up.
