Food for thought....maybe

At the risk of sounding totally bonkers; why couldn't you take an 8.2"/8.5" or even 12-bolt GM center section, shorten the axle tubes so the wheel bearings/seals are flush with the centersection ends, create stub axles from the GM axles with a Datsun u-joint/CV flange plate, fabricate a nose mount from a simple u-bolt and use the existing "ears" on the housing for a custom upper housing mount? A lot of work, no doubt; but you'd have ratios out the wazoo available, not to mention inexpensive posi units.

It could be done, but why waste energy re-inventing the wheel when you could just buy a 63-82 Corvette cast iron Dana center? Or for that matter, an 84-96 aluminum center section? Have custom halfshafts made with the 'vette inner and Nissan outer. Except for gear availability, the Nissan stuff seems pretty stout...

EDIT: After thinking about it some more, there is the Ford IRS center from the T-bird or Mustang Cobra, and even the new Explorer and Expedition.
