johnc
I guess something is being lost in the translation here. The discussion about studs was regarding the four studs on the side shaft flange, not the wheel studs on the stub axle.
Icehound
Thanks for doing this John. It will be nice to now have bolt-in access to fairly new LSD for my old car. Cheers. -D
proxlamus©
oh im getting excited for the final outcome!
johnc
No real updates except my machinist said he's working on them today and will go to the broacher/gear cutter on Monday.
johnc
Bad news - the shaft was cut .100 undersize per a drawing error. The prototype set is scrap and on Monday we're cutting a new set. This one will be all one piece, no welding.
V8INtheZ
Ooh fancy, might have to sell a car to get a set of these!
johnc
Version 2 of the prototype set is at the gear cutters today. No pics.
Racer Z
Excellent! Keep us posted. I want a set please. Any idea on the price?
proxlamus©
Racer Z... read a few posts above for pricing =)
johnc
That's not the pricing, that's just a guess. The axles are broached and now they are on the way to carburizing.
proxlamus©
Don't worry, I've bought them all up and will keep the price "fair." So I assume you will be selling a pieced together "kit" for those of us having problems snagging a good STi R180?
johnc
So I assume you will be selling a pieced together "kit" for those of us having problems snagging a good STi R180? Nope. I don't want to be responsible for a used diff as part of a product I'm selling.
Racer Z
So I assume you will be selling a pieced together "kit" for those of us having problems snagging a good STi R180? I'm under the impression that this will be a complete new output shaft with mating flange this time. I hope I'm right, cause I'm having trouble finding a pair of STI axles and the few I did find cost toooo damn much.
Racer Z
Rough idea: $500 a pair. Is that still your guesstamation price John?

If you go back to the first post in this thread: The flange end of the these side shafts will bolt up to the stock 240Z halfshafts. And the $500 is still a guestimate. Racer Z
I re-read the original post and that clears things up, a lot. I must have got your web page mixed up with this item (http://www.betamotorsports.com/products/products.php?cat=11). $500.00 is worth it to me to finish this conversion. We were on the track (Buttonwillow) this weekend. Could feel the inside tire spinning coming out of the hairpins (both east and west). johnc
Yeah, those are something I made for myself years ago to use the Nissan pickup R180 in my car and then a few other folks asked if I could make up a set for them.
Zmanco
John, what are your thoughts on how much torque/HP is safe to put through an R180 with stock 240z half shafts that is NOT used for drag racing? In other words, the launches will all be reasonable (no drop clutch at redline, etc) and the car is driven on the street and/or road course? Assume it has a CLSD if that makes a difference. johnc
I ran 275 ft. lbs. through my two R180s that had Quaife LSDs on my road race 240Z.
johnc
I pick up the prototype parts tonight. We used good material, the splines carburized out to 46 Rockwell. Hopefully they fit. After I screwed up the drawing on the first set I'm worried about all the other dimensions - even after triple checking everything.
