josh817
Finally finished the big stuff! Now I just have emblems and seals. I'm happy but I'm sad because of some other stuff. But at least I'm done now. This beater: Tada! My momma and myself. Hurrah! Time for another open header spin but this time its 6-3-2's. rturbo 930
Got any better pics? Oh, and if you don't mind me asking, how much did the whole thing cost you?
josh817
You don't want close up ones... Clear coat had some sags and I did it outside/in the garage so there is a bit of dust on some areas. I have to wet sand and buff and it should be fine. I don't care about the dust nibs but the sags look like someone dumped a bucket on them. I bought Nason everything from "Taylors". 1 quart etching primer with 1 quart reducer, 1 quart 2k primer with 1 pint of reducer or hardener whatever it is, 2 quarts of sealer ready spray which freaked me out because it had like a really thick mud/goop/slop at the bottom so I thought it had gone bad and it probably did but it still worked lovely, 2 quarts base coat (BMW Lemans Blue) with 1 quart reducer and no activator because its such a tiny amount, 1 gallon of Legacy Finishes clear with 1 quart activator/reducer. All that was $320 or something like that. Then I bought 40-80-220-500-1000-1200-2000 grit paper, Harbor Freight spray gun which actually came with a large gun and a small detail gun for only $60! I'm not a big proponent on the whole spend $300 on a spray gun because it sprays "better", as far as I'm concerned, this one sprayed very well. Then I bought a can of Dynaglass but that crap doesn't feather in very wel at all so Taylors talked me into this Dolphin Glaze self leveling stuff for $14 per pouch. I had no luck with it at all. Its self leveling so basically that just means its thin and it runs so its only good on horizontal surfaces. You add enough hardener and it hardens too fast, atleast for someone like me because you can't scrape it up with your putty spatchula thing, it just drips off. So then I was like alright I'll add a little less and it never dried so then I had to sand it all off. I said screw it and bought a can of bondo for $10 and did the entire car with one can. I used have of the Dolphin Glaze on ONE DOOR so that was like a waste of $14 for me. I didn't invest in a gas mask with the canisters. I had one of thsoe dust masks but it was beefed up and had a really thick cotton face to it. I'm not dead and when I was finished painting you could see all the blue it had caught. You could still smell the fumes pretty bad though. To save on paint and sanding time I bought 3 cans of black Krylon so the inside of the hood will get that, my mirrors were sprayed with that, and the rear spoiler. When the door jams start to flake, if ever, I will just Krylon black them. Lots of other little things that I didn't mention but everything together I should be at like $400-$450 and it took me a god awful 3 months to do it with school. The sanding down to bare metal was the worst part because I was doing it with one of those carbon disks, wire brush, and a die grinder for the entire car. I thought I wasn't going to have enough paint because with the 1 quart of etching primer and its 1 quart of reducer, thats 2 quarts of fluid and I only got one pass over the entire car but it was my first time. I decided to spray only the body work areas with the 2k primer and I got 3 coats by doing that. 1 coat of sealer, which I had to toss like half a quart out of each can because of the goop at the bottom. I shook the can well but when I went to stir it I felt it and flipped ape ♥♥♥♥ thinking it went bad over the past 3 months of having it in a closed can. I didn't want the goop in my gun but if you didn't stir it, it sprayed out like a water. It was clear and really thin,so I stirred it and like I said, tossed a lot to avoid getting the stuff in my gun. You only do one coat of sealer, it flashes off to a satin finish, then 3 coats of base, and 2 coats of clear. I still have a good half gallon if it left but I was getting too many runs so I called it quits. I have plenty of pics if anyone wants me to post, just let me know. Next up is EDIS and 4 wheel disks! Yay! I still need to save up atleast $800 for college. :/
