need help diagnosing electrical/msd prob

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys, I have had a very intermittant problem for the last few months. Cruising down the road, my car would stumble for a split second then keep on cruising. One time it died and started right up. Another time it died, would not start then went back to it a few hours later and it fired right up. Don't think it is fuel related as the time it wouldn't fire it had plenty of fuel pressure.

My setup is an msd 6AL, mallory unilite dizzy and msd blaster II coil. My first thought was the dizzy as I have heard bad rep on them. I put my old points dizzy in and it did it again with in one mile. I now bypassed my msd box and changed my coil and it seems to be fixed. My problem is that I had to change two components so still don't have it pin pointed. I can not hook up my blaster II coil without the msd box as it gets real unhappy without a ballast resister (which I don't have).

I am leaning towards the msd box being the issue, but before I buy a new one, want to make sure it could not be the coil. Could a coil fail like that? Bad coils I have came accross in the past would get worse and worse as they heated up. Mine does not.

Thanks for reading and hope someone can help.

My unilite/msd 6al/ blaster II coil has been trouble free for 7+ years on my V8 and used the same on my V6 ( different shutter/rotor) for years before that . I believe if the "eye" goes, nothing works. My only issue with my msd was when my battery started failing my rev limiter pill seemed off according to my tach. I found that the MSD likes a full strong 12 volts. An issue I had early on was the coil tower on the dist. cap was arcing to the hood latch above causing intermittent misfiring or non starting. I identified that at night after seeing the arc.

Good luck!
