vega
sold the 240sx finally- ug that car was becoming a pain in my side long long story. wither way a few months ago a guy who lives next to my best frind had a 1978 280z siting out frotn of his house - i wanted it then- he WAS going to sell it to me then but then the next day- i came with cash and his son wanted it.- sigh... well on the 26th this last month he posted it on craigs list and i thought it coudldnt be the same guy.- It was, turns out his son was scared of driving it in the winter (as he should be no one should drive that car int he winter its too classic for that...*rolls eyes*). So my luck this week end i talked to him and he said he'd sell it so i sold my project 240 mess and got the 280z. as soon as i get pictures i will post them up. my question is after doing lots and lots of googling and z site searching i cant find the correct 0-60 time for the car at all. its a 1978 with the rare 5 speed option (FS5W71A- which im not sure if thats a borg warner case or what it is- if you know i'd love to know that as well) so that means it actually has the 170 hp l28e the onyl 0-60 time i can find is for the MUCH lesser hp 145 hp version which was for the 4 speed or 3 speed cars only. 1. so whats the 0-60 of the 170 hp 5 speed car NOT the 4 speed/3spd 145 hp car? 2. who actually produced the FS5W71A 5 speed that was in the car from 77-78? borg warner? tremec? munci? etc? ----------- oh btw the 78' it has 77k orginal miles! orginal paint interior everything! its just missing the passenger mirrior which is an easy fix. blue72
The FS5W71A weren't sold on U.S. cars as standard equipment. You've probably got an FS5W71-B. It's a Nissan transmission as far as I know. The BW units were automatic transmissions and the T-5 wasn't introduced on a Z car until the early eighties. The rear diff was manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries though. 280Z manual trans rear diff was a 3.545:1 R200 The four speed manual trans actually had deeper first and second gear ratios than the 5 speed models. That could translate into slightly better off the line acceleration for a 4 speed equipped car. The horsepower issue is another letdown too. Do some research on the differences between SAE Net and Gross to see what I mean. IIRC the 170 gross hp 280Z makes about 136 Net hp. That's about 112 hp to the wheels when it was new. Really pushing it would have given a quarter mile pass in the 17 second neighborhood. Good news is that you'd be toe to toe with a Prius in a straight up race. vega
i am plannign on doing a l28et swap what tran do the 280zx turbo guys use when they are getting the 400whp or so for a transmission. i assume the r200 will hold to that kind of power seeing v8s are put against them as long as a rebuild is done. vega
not a craigs list car no.... and it has holes for the mirrors and it also has a place where the gasket was.
FlatBlack
Hmmm... Mine didn't have that.
MAG58
IIRC it was a factory option for that side. A rare factory option, but an option none-the-less. My 71 doesn't have the holes, but the 73 parts car I robbed for goodies did.

Administrators BRAAP Posted November 8, 2009 Administrators Share Posted November 8, 2009 my question is after doing lots and lots of googling and z site searching i cant find the correct 0-60 time for the car at all. . Off the showroom floor published 0-60 times of cars in that era are going to be plus/minus at least whole second or so due to variances in manufacturing and state of tune. Also, at the age these are now and its parts, not too mention God only knows what state of tune or fine tune the previous owners did or not give it, 0-60 MPH times could be as good as 6.5 seconds, (HIGHLY unlikely), up to 12+ seconds. If the car is running decent, probably in the 7.5-10 second range. its a 1978 with the rare 5 speed option (FS5W71A- which im not sure if thats a borg warner case or what it is- if you know i'd love to know that as well) so that means it actually has the 170 hp l28e the onyl 0-60 time i can find is for the MUCH lesser hp 145 hp version which was for the 4 speed or 3 speed cars only. The 5 speed option was NOT rare! It is not uncommon to find a '78 car with a factory 5 speed. The 5 speed became an option in '77. Also, there is only 1 version of the L28E offered in ALL of the US market 280-Z cars from 1975 through 1978, (79 and 80 ZX had the same block/head as the ’77-’78 Z). As such, your '78 280-Z is not some special hot rod edition. The only rear '78 was the black Pearl, and that was just paint code, option! The data tag in the engine bay on ALL S30 280-Z cars from 1975 through 1978 say 170 HP even though they actually only produced approx 150 HP. You may want to verify your Z car info before posting them as fact. i found where the original owner is i just need to know if they are still there or what now. no hes a dumn ass is all lol And I know I have busted your chops about your lazy pinky finger. No more warnings! thats pretty odd on the door.did he put alot of weight on it when he was getting out.could have thrown the allignment off on the door. That applies to you too!
