5 Speed Rebuild

I'm picking up a close ratio 5 speed this week and plan to swap it for the 4 speed in my '71 Z. I'd like to have it rebuilt before installing.

 

What's a typical price for a rebuild and any suggestions on who does good work in the Orange County or Riverside area of SoCal?

tranny rebuild can cost a arm and a leg. anywhere from 400.00 up depending on parts and thats already cheap. what are you using the car for? i say if its just cruising, just save yourself some cash and get a good operating used transmission and install it. the price for a rebuild will buy you a decent used one especially a factory datsun 5spd.

It's used just for cruising. My problem is that I have the used 5 speed and don't want to put it in and then find out it needs to be rebuilt. I know nothing about its history - like if it's noisy or pops out of gear. I'd feel better rebuilding and then installing.

Five speed transmissions are relatively easy to rebuild. The hard part is you need access to a bearing puller / arbor press. As far as I know there really isn't a good kit out there for the older Nissan 5 speeds. Honestly, I would just split it and check your bearings. If they all spin easily without any slop, and the syncros / selectors don't look torn up. Seal it back up and run it, the main thing is getting the correct gear oil. There is a thread on oils with the proper specs.

Right on. I rebuilt my ZX 5speed in a weekend, and if there is a machine shop in the area, they shouldn't charge much at all to press a bearing on and press a bearing off. I believe that with all new bearings and synchros I was still below 200 bucks in the rebuild. Remember though that if you're rebuilding, the one thing that will do the most good is re-shimming all the gears back to factory tolerances. The years have probably opened up the clearances on the gears making shifting less direct and making the synchro's work harder to get the job done.
