my 260z rb25 project

Well i have been lurking on this website for quite awhile, so i thought i would start a thread on my project.

It is a 1974 260z that i bought a soon as i moved back to the states from Japan.

Once i bought my house and got the car into my garage me and my wife started to strip it down to bare metal and any rust that i will need to take care of. As we progressed with stripping the car i have found very little rust at all on the whole car, there was some spots that had a little surface flash, but nothing that a quick hit with the sanding wheel didn't take care of. During this i found that the car has been in a accident that i was not told about, both rear fenders had about a 1/4 inch thick layer of bondo on them. i have since removed all the bondo to get a good look at what i am working with. 3802786324_66d13e3071.jpg

The other side looks about the same. Since this picture was taken i have stripped the rest of the car and have not found any more surprises. Like I said before the car is not in to bad of shape other then the rear fenders. Here is a few more progress shots of stripping the body down, then i will get on with the plans for this car.

Cause of the limited time i have to work on the car, i work for a weekend, and then on Sunday night i clean everything up and tack rag the bare metal and spray a etching primer so that i don't get any flash throughout the week.

now for the stuff that belongs in this forum, when i came back from Okinawa i brought the motor and drive train from a 180sx that i had swapped a rb25 into.

Before anyone comments yes it is a Rb25, and yes i have Rb26 valve covers installed on it. i like the way the Rb26 covers look to the stock covers.

basic spec on the motor and the supporting parts;

Stock block and rotating parts

head has been ported and polished

1.2 mm metal head gasket Tomei

Stock cams from a RB25 N/A ( long story)

Intake manifold custom made By S-tec in Okinawa Hold just shy of 3 liters

Q45 Throttle body

Injectors are Nismo 550cc Side feeds

Exhaust manifold is a S-tec top mount T4 flanged true divided SS mani

Turbine is a T-04R with a .82 a/r exhaust housing and P trim clipped wheel

As of right now i have a Apexi Power Fc that i will be using for the computer.

I think that sums up everything for the motor. As for the drive train;

OS Gikin twin plate undamped clutch

R33 5 speed xmsn

R200 short nose Diff with a 2-way Nismo Lsd installed

Matching shafts for the diff

Complete Techno Toy Tuning Rear end swap for the R200.

still have a lot of stuff to get to finish this project, but the biggest thing is that i want to do it all myself, or at least as much as i passably came...

I hope that you all enjoy watching me try to figure out what the hell i am doing.

Cool project. I like the early 260 myself. I'm using twins now but I'm planning on swapping over to a GT35r with a T4 turbine housing, so that I can use the s-tec divided T4 manifold like what you mention.

I didn't know He made a intake also. Can you show some better pics of your manifolds pleeze.. :2thumbs:

The intake manifold is custom, as far as i know i have the only box style plenum manifold S-tec has made other than the one on his own car. For the next month i am on the east coast for work but as soon as I get back home i will take some more pictures of it for you.

As for the exhaust manifold, they are great unless he has changed the design, he uses 321ss and last time i talked to him he had yet to have one crack. they flow really well. I will be modding the Exhaust manifold i have to fit 2 waste gates and to make sure that it all clears the steering linkage.

A gt35r will be fun on an Rb. I had a friend the was running a gt35r on a sr20det and made something like 500hp and was spooled by 5000rpm, put that on a rb25/26 and you will have a blast.

Thanks for the comments.

well not a whole lot have changed since i last posted since i am still on the east coast, but today i ordered a bunch of stuff from Mckinny motorsports. i ordered the following stuff.

motor and xmsn mount set

exhaust

intercooler

throttle cable

radiator.

this weekend i am going to order everything i need for the fuel system.

I will be back in Cali in a few week and will post up some more progress pictures and such.

well i have not touched the Z since i have been back home for the holidays, but i did get some parts in the mail. below is almost the complete fuel system that i am going to use for the z.

starting with a 16gal cell then a 1 gal surge tank feeding two bosch 044 inline pumps y'd to a -10 inline filter and -10 hose up to the fire wall where it will Y to 2 -8 lines to feed both ends of the fuel rail. -8 return to a Sard fpr which will retun back to the surge tank.

4214852100_34aa8295a2_b.jpg

still need to order the 3 fuel pumps, 1 high volume low pressure pump and the 2 bosch 044 pump to complete the system.

now for the second set of parts that i got in the mail.

a complete Tomei Rb25 valve train, Tomei 270 dur. 10.25mm lift cams(both intake and exhaust.) set of Tomei springs and drop retainers, and set of solid lifters. The guy also threw in the valves and shims that he was using with them, so on a uncut head it should get me real close to specs with the shimming.

Well here is a little bit of an update. I got back from my trip to the east coast and have had some free time to work on the Z. I went and picked up several of the parts that I ordered from Mckinney Motorsports as it is only a 15min drive from my house. I went ahead a dropped the motor into the car to check clearances with my intake and exhaust manifolds. The intake need to be redesigned due to the throttle body flange angle running into the fender. Now the exhaust manifold gives plenty of clearance for the turbo from the shock tower, but i need to relocate the wastegate piping to clear the steering linkage. Also while i was at it i mocked up the radiator and intercooler for clearance checks and to start designing the piping.

Crap man this is a sexy build.

Just a few questions and favors to ask from you.

First i noticed the engine brackets and mounts. Who made them? any more details on those you can offer me and possibly pictures.

Second who made the surge tank and also could you get some close up pics of the welds. Just wondering how great they look. I ask because i weld and like to see.

Thanks,

Brent

Awwww... ****....

I thought it was you, but I just made a post in another thread responding to you talking about being a Phrog crewchief. Now I feel like an idiot, lol.

Its Colgan.

I have you to thank for introducing me to this site, though I never bought that RB before I left Oki years ago. Wish I had but... I only had 2 weeks to get out of there after we got back. Anyway, after I got out I went back home and restored that Z I had told you about. Here's a link to the build so you know I wasn't bullshitting you: http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?/topic/69221-new-z-project/

Decided to go the "easy and available" route since it was mostly just me in the garage teaching myself. Ended up using an L28ET with a Haltech E6K ECU.

Its good to see that you're back, and to see that you now have a Z build going on. I'm interested to see the progress.

An interesting question, since I can't see it in the pictures... Is that RB still fitted with a forward oil sump or does it already have a 200ZR/custom made rear sump pan in it? My god is that header a work of art, too bad you have to chop it for steering clearance. RHD conversion? heh heh.

I have a 220zr sump pan on there. yeah it sucks that i will have to cut up the manifold, but it will be all right.

macr32, thank you very much for posting those pics of the Stec exh man fitment! This puts my mind at ease on weather it fit in our cars or not.

The w/g dump pipe should be a easy fix.

Not a problem, it actually fits very well. I will be posting up more pictures as i go along modding the W/G piping.

Did they give you a break on the pricing? I've been looking at there site but it seems a bit pricey for some of there stuff.

No, no price cut. I just bit the bullet and bought all the stuff cause it is known to work. i am already going to be fabbing enough stuff for this project.

They raped me back when I was building my motor. They charged me $500 for a plain Nissan gasket set for my rb26. I will never buy from them, or recommend them after that...
