Miles
I am going to remove the fuel tank from a 72 240Z to close off tubes that are no longer needed. Are there any problems with removing and reconnecting the filler hose? It looks like it may be hard to get to. I am going to install a new fuel gauge sending unit while I have the tank out. I noted on the new sending unit that the electrical parts of the sending unit are all open and exposed inside the gas tank. Seems like they should be in a sealed unit. jeromio
Removing it? No problem. Sawzall. Re-installing it? Not gonna happen. I tried to be nice with it. Wasted effort - 2 hours or so.
Jeff
I got mine out in one piece but I don't have any idea how I'm gonna get that sucker back in there. Don't take the filler tube out if you don't have to.
Miles
Jeromio Did you ever get the filler hose reconnected? I wonder if the whole filler hose could come out of the fender as an assembly. Miles
jeromio
Oh wait, I think I am confusing the issue. I got the filler neck off the tank, although it wasn't easy. (Actually tank off the neck is more accurate.) It was not easy, but doable. I can't imagine getting it back on - old and stiff. It was the getting the neck off the car that was impossible. Ignore my rantings...I replaced my datsun tank with a Camaro tank. You might try using a pan of boiling water to soften it up right before you try to reassemble things. Guest Anonymous
Miles, I noticed that you are removing unneeded lines from the fuel tank. Are you going to leave one as a vent? My solution for a vent was to take a line from the tank to the carbon canaster up front. Otherwise for me there would not have been a vent. Not even sure I needed a vent but did it anyway. Miles
Steve I am sealing all of the unneeded lines. For ventilation I drilled a small hole in the gas cap (cap removed from car). With just the lines plugged there have been no problems. I just want to get rid if all of the stock fuel lines that leak fumes and fuel when the tank is filled all the way. I still don't see an easy way to disconnect and reconnect the filler hose to the tank. So I may have to figure a way to cap the lines with the tank in the car. Guest Zachb55
i removed my tank and it was a real wrestling match to get that filler hose out, didnt even think about going back in, but what comes out, can go back in, or something like that, well we'll just have to see how it turns out, id rather just pop a fuel cell in there and not have to worry about all that business... -Zach
