VinhZXT
Hi all, I've just got a 280Z and definitely will do a V8 conversion on this car. Now I have some questions and hope I can get some answers here. While searching the wreck yard yesterday me and a friend found a couple of good potential motors that we can use. 1 is a 383 Chevy from an Impala the other is a 5.0L 302 from a Lincoln. The 302 look like it just had a rebuild cuz everything was painted and there is no oil leak any where. I am asking myself why that car end up in the wreck yard... Both motor will need a rebuild anyway and I am leaning toward the 383 motor. My question is does this thing fit into a Z? and how much HP can I get out of this motor? My friend has a 302 in his Z now.. so I want something else in mine. Feel free to give some inputs guys.. Thanks
Mikelly
Vihn, Do a search in this category... Lots og good info on 383 strokers in Zs... A 383 stroker is basically a 350 chevy with a 400 Crank and 5.7 or 6 inch rods. That is pretty much the jist of a 383 combo. They make great power and lots of torque and getting 400HP out of a basic build is almost hard NOT TO do! Mike Kelly
Lone Star 1
Hey Vihn How do you know the motor in the Impala is a 383. Chevy didn't make a 383 in any late model Impala's. What you need to look for is a donner car for both the motor(with emmision controls) a trany you want in your Z. I think most would agree that if you intend to drive this car as a steet car you will want a trany with overdrive, so your probley looking for a late model donner car. For emmision you will need to find a donner the same year or newer than your Z anyway. Good luck with your search, and happy Z-ing. Guest Anonymous
I would be careful of the 383. Chevy never made a 383 so you know its been played with already. I would be wondering things like, how much has the thing been bored out, how much has the crank been turned etc. If you got the bucks, I am a firm believer in starting with a good engine, say a LT-1,and build it like you need. Get in, hold on and shut up!!!!!!!!!!!
VinhZXT
Thanks for the reply guys. I don't know that chevy block is truely a 383. I might have been fooled by the stickers on the fenders. Anyway the whole drivetrain I could get for 100 or a little more. So my question is even if it is just a 350 what do I need to get 350HP rear wheel out of this motor? Also I want to stay with the auto trans.. Is there any newer car with an overdrive trans that will fit this motor? Thanks again Vinhweb page
