astroclimb
Hi, Could use some help. Still pretty much a newbie to the z-car scene. Have '75 280z that my family bought me to restore for Xmas. Anyway, have it running (sort of) well enough to drive 10-30 mile round trips. Well, the short cut to the story is that during such a length trip the car will puff smoke (fairly white, but it SMELLS LIKE OIL) briefly but intense enough that it reminds me of some of those smoke-screen tricks you see in a James Bond movie (ok, more likely Maxwell Smart TV show!). Seems to do it only when decelerating or at least not while accelerating. Weird part that I'm having trouble comprehending is that it is very intermittent--its not like I'm a rolling trail of smoke. Did the search, didn't find anything that really hit on the symptoms I'm seeing (and I've never seen such different behavior before, but then again I'm not used to diagnosing 35 yr old cars). Friend of mine suggests that it might be valve seal going bogus. Any hints or other ideas of what's my car's problem? Thanking all of you in advance for your help! proxlamus©
my this sounds familiar. http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?showtopic=55668 This is for a turbo'd motor.. but similar symptoms can develop on a N/A during decel. ModernS30
sounds like rings or valve seals. I would look into other links posted here as well.
astroclimb
Jasper....answer to your Q is mine is an auto tranny (for now).... PrOxLaMuS...thanks for the link, will research that direction more. ModernS30...another question for you. If rings, why would it be very intermittent? Having seen motors w/ring issues before, they smoke pretty much all the time. I just don't understand that one. Thanks to all for your advice! skydvejam
Does it smoke any at idle? I do not know these cars that much anymore, I have owned 5, and looking at getting another one here to build up soon. Anyways check your airbox I know that was an issue I had with stock injection. Roadkill
sounds like valve seals. if it were rings it would smoke pretty much all the time. dose it smoke on start up? cause if so that definatly sounds like valves.
Two80z4me
Possibly its because when the cars motor gets hot that one of your valves is sticking open and then when you hit a bump or it releases it stops smoking, then gets stuck and so on... rx8ss
Check your PCV positive crank case ventilation and where it is connected to the engine. Some times people connect this to the wrong place and went decelling your engine goes into high vacuum and pulls oil thru a vacuum hose and burns it (smoke). Check the baffle is see if is full of oil and not draining back into engine. Good luck.
