Alternator bracket driving me nuts - HELP!

Recommended Posts

Having trouble with the brackets for the alternator. SBC with short water pump, trying to attach passanger side. I bought the header mount from summit but it won't work, alternator hits the valve cover or is too high for hood clearance. Bought some chrome crap from kragen, it almost works but the alternator is right on touchin the fender well leaving no room for adjustment.

So, can someone tell me what mounts to buy and where to buy them( part numbers if possible) Thanks icon_biggrin.gif

This solution may seem Mickey Mouse, but it worked well for me: take a smog pump bracket and use it to mount the alternator. You can use washers or spacer tubing to get the desired fitment/alignment pulley to pulley. It tucks the alternator in low and tight to the front center of the engine. Just a thought.

If you have a short pump and cylinder heads with accessory bolt holes, I highly recommend the 69-72 chevy small block truck cast bracket that bolts to the head. This is same/similar to the 69-81 Corvette setup. But as you know, when you tell someone it's for a 'vette, the price doubles! This mounts the alternator on the drivers side head FYI. Check out the 67-72 truck parts board at Ultimate Chevy Truck Board

From the home page, click message boards and from the index at top, choose 67-72 truck parts. Post a wanted their and someone should be able to help you out or search members for GMC Paul, Mothertruckers, CPNE, or Wes and email them directly as they all can hook you up I would think. Otherwise, shouldn't be too hard to find in a junkyard. Great OEM quality at used parts price but only if you have accessory holes!

I'm not sure on hood clearance, but if you'll let my know, I'll measure on my Jimmy heighth and shoot you a digital photo.

If you're OK with it on drivers side LOW and beside your balancer take a look at my pics, not even sure if it's visible their (non-tech area) icon_biggrin.gif , I can get you the transdapt number for that...basically if you can hold your alternator beside your harmonic balancer ~3/4" gap b/t them then this can work for you. I have a short water pump as well (gives a nice clear site line across your engine front).

It's a very simple/solid/small/chromed light one piece design.

other thread in which pics link is...

Ross, isn't your setup in the SCARAB position? I went through this EXACT same HELL myself and the lower driver's side mounts I tried were a no-go inthe JTR setback. The alternator hit the motor mounts!

My solution, after a TON of trial and error (including the Vette' mount BTW which I still have but hit my valve cover) was to bite the bullet and get a LONG water pump. Once did that I bought a couple of cheapo' brackets and I was done! There's also a VERY nice heim setup from March that would work but only with the LWP. SWP was just too much hassle for me. However if you've got a short alternator like Pete you can do his setup - very slick!

Use the search and you'll find my agonizing over this just a couple of months ago. Should be a HUGE thred on it. w/pics........ icon_rolleyes.gif

Hell no..mines a 280zx so setback is different. Mines tight to firewall, weighs less than OEM and over 50% weight on rears. Hit your motor mounts? Hmm, well if it fits as I described beside your balancer ~3/4" away then it'll fit with this mount. I can take actual measurements if anyone needs. It is NOT right on my frame rail as the summit type lower mounts place it which might be what you tried. It was a v. bright day when I took those pics so it's not very clear it's position. This bracket is $50US or less.

this pic might show it better, perhaps it would be close to your motor mount location, if I have the 3 or 3.5" JTR setback clearance available then it would fit yours..

Go to Parr Automotive http://www.parts123.com/PartFrame.asp?ZTM=cadefhdb&GHOME=www.parrautomotive.com&TITLE=Parr_Automotive an buy a Alan Grove AGC-AL-215R and a long waterpump. If you don't have the tapped hole in the head you will need a AGC-AL-215RO to go with it.

Don't forget you will need a new crank and waterpump pulley so it's a good time to go billet! icon_rolleyes.gif

Hey Ross, how are you keeping that Griffin radiator in there, I mean the top mounts, I didn't see any that I recognized, or maybe missed them from the angle of the picture? icon_smile.gif
