Kris.Is.Awesome
Okay, I've seen (and read) many threads and writeups on adding an internally regulated alternator (280zx) on early Z's. I'm using an EZ wire kit, and a little unsure about EXACTLY what needs to be done, as all the writeups are for stock harness'd cars. E: is ground, got that- should go to neg on batt, correct? BAT: Is the +12v output, goes to pos on battery, no brainer? N: is the sense wire. I have an 'alt exciter' wire in my harness, is this what the N terminal needs? I believe the exciter is just a +12v wire. F: is for the lamp. I don't plan on running the ammeter (voltmeter sometime down the road). Is this where I need a diode or resistor? CarJway
I installed an EZ wire harness in my Z, but altered it quite a bit to reflect some of the points the following article stated. I have the battery, and all power sources from the fuse box leading to a main source. The On/Acc features of the fuse box are controled by high amp Bosch relays, being fed from a main power source. I can go into a fair amount of detail if you would like, but check out the article below. Alt Wiring As for the Alt light, I used the "Low Fuel" light as a bulb for the lamp light, along with a relay. I did not use a diode. The only thing I'm wondering is the N and F wires. The sense wire just needs a 12+ ignition wire- the excitor wire in the harness, right? I don't have a low fuel light. There are lots of different answers for this including the 3a diode.

I only dug in to this area once, when I switched my car to an internal regulator alternator, so my memory may be faulty. But I think that alternators with N and F terminals are externally regulated. Internally regulated alternators have L and S terminals. That might be why you're getting few responses. When you say N and F are you talking about the terminals on the alternator or the wires from the harness? If you have a new harness for an old car, you will probably need to use one of the conversion methods or a conversion kit from zsondabrain over at classiczcars.com or MSA. It sounds like your harness is designed for an external regulator, so will need to be converted. Maybe they should rename the kit the "Kind of EZ wire kit"....
