LS1 thoughts (Hollow, lopey idle) - Mentor needed.

Recommended Posts

I am green, please go easy on me.

I have also searched, but looking for some condensed thoughts.

Soon I will look to put an Ls1 in my 1973 240Z (Rat-Z).

This is a weekend driver toy car. Stripped with a race interior.

Just a toy. I have other cars for transportation.

I like the Ls1 for price and newer features (EFI).

But alot of the Ls1 motors "Purr like a kitten", not what I want.

I want that "Hollow" type sound, lopey, unstable idle. A little bit of "WTF/?" factor.

Questions Engine:

Is that all Cam / Headers?

Or is that the perfect EFI?

Do normal LS1 motors have a GIANT flywheel? (They all seem to idle and rev very gentlemanly.)

Questions Tranny:

I'd love a 4 speed for nostalgia purposes, like a Muncie M22.

But the Muncie is a side-shifter and I want stock shifter location.

Any other 4 speed choices?

The T56 is just a lot of shifting for a toy car.

Perhaps a 5 speed would be a good alternative (T5?)

I could use a level-headed "Mentor" to bounce ideas off of in a private email setting.

Volunteers?

Well I will go easy on you and tell you that you hav not heard very many ls based engines. You can very easily get what you are wanting with a cam swap, headers, and good exhaust. That is all my car has in it, and it sounds like a beast. As far as any hocus pocus with a huge flywheel ect.... there really isn't any. It is all in the heads with these engines. Now to the muncie/5speed idea instead of a T56. IMO it isn't a good idea. Most T-5's will not hold the kind of power a moderate cammed ls will put out. If you don't like the 5th and 6th gears just don't use them.. Hope I was able to help you out some.

Same cam (Thunder Racing RapTR Cam)as mine, not my car, and I put 442rwhp with only that headers, good exhaust, ls6 intake with a ported throttle body.

The problem with a 4 speed is no overdrive. I know Cary (tube80z) has driven an LS2 Z with a Super T-10. It's a light trans, but with a stockish sized tire you're limited in speed to about 140 mph. If it's a weekend toy that might not be a problem. If its a weekend track car, that might be a limitation you don't want.

That cam sounds nice, so maybe an LS can have a cranky idle.

Especially without cats (not needed for my registration in AZ).

Looks like the T-10 is a side-shifter that requires different shifter location.

Lack of OD just isn't a factor for me since it is a weekend Blvd cruiser primarily.

Will continue my hunt for a LSx/T56.

Thanks all.
