morbias
Hi guys, this is my first post and I am in need of some assistance I have an early '74 260z (UK spec) and the wiring is ass backwards. Not sure who rewired it or what they were thinking but half the wires were disconnected and some were connected up to things they weren't ever meant to be connected to. So far I have connected up the brake switch and hand brake warning switch, and I did have headlights/tail-lights/number plate lights/reverse lights working... until I decided to clean all the fuse holders and harness box connector pins today. Hopefully that will all be working again once I replace the fuses, the ones in there all looked pretty old. Then I took off the steering column housing and that's where I need some help; there is a red wire and a white/red wire hanging loose, it looks like they were intentionally disconnected as the red wire has been cut and the white/red has an unplugged female connector on it. There is a red wire and a white/red wire coming out of the combination switch that are connected together - am I right in assuming that the loose wires were originally joined with these? Sorry about the pic, but my garage is dark and I was armed with only with a torch and a camera phone. There is also a relay hanging in the driver side footwell, I can't see which loom it is attached to, any ideas? The connecting wires are blue/green. 19762802+2
http://www.xenons30.com/reference.html They have a FSM for the 74 260z, I don't think its UK spec but it may help somewhat. There is this too. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/wiringdiagrams/74_260Z_wiring.pdf
morbias
Thanks, I already looked at those before but I guess I didn't look close enough. It does look as though I can join the red to the red and the white/red to the white/red; as far as I can tell, having the red joined to the white/red means high beams will not currently work Any ideas on the random relay? Also, how the **** do I take out the dash light rheostat, it's huge and there is no way to get a screwdriver between it and the trip reset dial. morbias
So, I connected red with red and white/red with white/red and high beam is now working. I still get no low beam, tail lights or reverse lights, brake lights work fine. I doubt it's the combination switch as I've rebuilt it and still have the same problem. Can anyone think of a common link between low beam, tail lights and reverse lights?
Naroko
I am having a the same trouble morbias, Have you had any luck on figuring out what is going on. Half the time my high beams will work and then last night I was on the highway going home and they randomly shut off on me I had to drive the rest of the way back with only hazard lights. Low beams have never worked on my car.
NewZed
I am having a the same trouble morbias, Have you had any luck on figuring out what is going on. Half the time my high beams will work and then last night I was on the highway going home and they randomly shut off on me I had to drive the rest of the way back with only hazard lights. Low beams have never worked on my car. Pretty typical of a dirty/corroded high beam/low beam switch. At the base of the turn signal stalk. I have had luck, twice, with spraying Deoxit DN5 in to the switch itself and working it around. Or you can take it apart and clean it. I have also found the contacts in the headlight switch, on top of the steering column, corroded and loose. It is easier to clean than the high/low switch since it is accessible. You can unbend the metal tabs and pop it apart to get to the contacts. Recrimp the metal tabs down tight to get good pressure on the contacts. Your "no low beams" problem suggests the high/low switch is the issue.
