t-tom
I was wanting to know if this seems hi to you all. I have a 71 Fairlady Z that I am having new lower quarter pannels (ends of the rocker pannel) put in. I am suppling the parts. They are going to do a little rust repair under the car. Patch a floor board and any other minor rut under there. I am brining them the car in bare metal condition (glass bead blasted)with new fenders doors and hood so there is no body work there. They want $6000.00 for the work. They do great work and only normally do hot rod custom stuff. The paint and body guy has many awards and has been in the paint side of it for 43 years. He said they will use only dupont products and it will take 8-10 weeks. Does this sound like a fair price. Im in Kansas City and cant find a lot of people that will even look at it. Breeze77z
You might try just getting a quote from another body shop, it probably won't be quite as reputable as the one you mention, but you also might be paying a premium for the award winner's precious time (not sarcastic, time IS money especially in that line of work). hope this helps a little. Patrick.
denny411
I would recomend finding a private individual that does quality body work on the side. I`ve had a number of vehicles painted by a local guy who has never even worked in a body shop. To his credit, he has done an average of 7 or 8 paint jobs a year for almost 20 years. For example, He took my 77, stripped the entire car to bare metal, welded and smoothed the rear valance, welded in all rust spots, welded in the marked lights, installed the front air dam and 3 piece rear spoiler, and painted the car with base clear. He did this all for less than 2,000 and, I`ve had nothing but compliments on the car. Body shops have alot of expenses that run the price up, like taxes, commercial building, employees, insurance and taxes. You might even be able to find someone that works for a proffessional that moonlights. my .
Two40MuscleZ
It sounds like you are paying for the name! Things get very pricey when you are talking full on custom and show quality stuff. Unless this individual is doing something uniquely special, or doing a $3,500+ chameleon paint job, or I've missed something you've said...I think he may be a bit exclusive! Unless, you are satisfied with his work and his price, I would research it further. Comps, VAN
Guest Anonymous
Shop around more. Sounds like this place has all the business they need.
RPMS
I agree with the other guys. $6k would be about right if you drove the car in to them and they did all the work, but considering the work you've already put into it, $6k is really steep. With the amount of work you've already invested ("Sweat equity") I'd imagine that you could get a high quality spray for about a thousand dollars. Add another $1,000 - 1,500 for any bodywork that's needed, and that's what I consider reasonable. I also agree with Denny. Get references from your local car club to find a good independent painter. Or talk to the guys in a local bike club. Motorcyclists are crazy for individual paint jobs, and there are sportbiking squids in every bike club who crash and need new paint on a regular basis. Guest zfan
Yeah shop around! You can do better if you look around. Talk to the locals, who do they recommend. Mike
