New frame rails?

Recommended Posts

In the process of stripping out the engine bay getting it ready for primer. While im in the area, I was just thinking about frame rails. I have plans for a 350 swap. Mabey a mild cam and head work but remain N/A. Any of you guys have trouble with the 350 on stock frame rails? Any good threads with some extra strength ideas for a v8?

All sorts of great stuff in the brakes suspension chassis subforum. chassis bracing and framerail replacement has been covered many times in many ways. Whether or not it's needed/necessary depends on the condition of your rails and your intentions for the car. I've read plenty of threads that have v8's with stock rails holding up well under normal driving conditions with 300-350 hp. Granted these individuals didn't see much track time.

The 280Z is stiffer and heavier that the 240Z , To feel safe and have a piece of mind I went ahead and added the Baddog frame rails and used 1/8th inch plate to tie the frame rails to the front frame and firewall for extra strength, front an rear strut tower braces and a heavy duty transmission mount spanning the frame rails. currently running a mild LT1 but will end up with a stroker LT1 eventually, The car is a lot stiffer than it was originally and I don't baby it when I drive it and haven't experienced the body flex I used to feel. I am thinking of eventually tying in the rear part of the floor frame rails with the rear unibody frame as done by some other members to complete front to rear frame.

Just my 2 cents

Greg

We used stock fram rails for several years with out any issues, When we upgraded the rollcage we installed the bull dog fram rails, I think that was the name of them. The fram rails was a easy install, they wrape around the original rails and you weld them in, but of course you want to get the car up on jackstands and make sure it is level an so forth before you start burning them in.
