700r4 will not go into any gear?????

Recommended Posts

I went for a quick 10 min test spin the other day to work out the bugs.

I pulled into the garage and made a small adjustment to a few rockers.

Today I get in the car, warm it up, put it in reverse and NOTHING.

It didn't move. No reverse, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.

I then jacked up the car, checked the linkage, looked for leaks, and checked the fluid level.

All good.

Then I disconnected the hose to the cooler (breaking the nipple off *#!@) to check if it was pumping fluid and it is.

Does anyone have other ideas?

first step is obviously verify your trans fluid levels are correct, and verify the converter spins with the engine, which it looks like you've done, theres a few links on how to adjust the TV linkage you should read

heres some linked info that might be useful

Ok, So I go into the garage, put it on jack stands, fire it up to see if the torque converter is spinning.

The car shifts into gear like nothing was wrong. I put it on the ground and its shifting through the gears like normal.

Can anyone tell me what might have been wrong? I don't wanna be out and this happen again.

its just a guess because IM not on site but you may be either low on trans fluid or the trans cooler had some air in the lines, let it idle until the engine reaches about 200F operating oil temp and verify the trans fluid levels correct.

you have to look at things that affect all the gears ie converter, fluid level, pump, pressure issue. how many bands are in a 700r i don't think it would be apply bands because it's affecting everything not just those associated with a slipping planetary gear set. have you changed the fluid and filter recently?? we had a mail truck come in. it was a 07 jeep it needed 17 quarts of atf+4 (stank stuff) but anyway it was so wore out we t-teched the new fluid in and it was slipping so bad it couldn't pull off the rack...maybe a broke shifter cable inside the sleeve. That's why i love manuals it's alot easier to diagnose
