OustedFairlady
So I picked up another car today. An '89 VW Golf, four door. It's got a bunch of GTI stuff on it, Recaro GTI seats, etc. Anybody ever owned one? The PO says he's had a few problems with it. Got it in a trade for a DSM I had. I'm pretty sure it has a 16V engine, but I'm not sure what to look for. It's also an auto. I'm not terribly concerned with modifying it, since I have a Honda Civic (92 Hatch) that I use as a DD, but I thought it might be fun to tinker with. I'll post up pics tomorrow. Anyway, so what do you guys think? And I know... Tomorrow, promise.
MAG58
Look for rust. They're like datsun's with rust. Is it a CIS motor or EFI?

OustedFairlady
It's EFI. I had a CIS Passat once. The car's rust free, but has a few dings in the fenders. It's in really nice condition, all in all. How difficult are VR6 swaps?
rturbo 930
Look for rust. They're like datsun's with rust. Is it a CIS motor or EFI? Not in my experience they aren't. My parents have one '78 280z (~168k) and one '86 Jetta GL (497k), both of which have been with them since they were nearly new, and as such, have been on the east coast the whole time. The 280Z has had a door replaced, a rocker, a repaint, and possibly more, and currently needs 2 dog legs, and 2 rear lower quarters, and some other misc. repair. The Jetta is all original, and needs part of the trunk lip fixed (minor) and there's a little battery tray rust. That's it. And the Jetta has just under 3X the miles. The Jetta has been a daily the entire time, so it's seen its share of winter weather. The 280Z was parked in 1993.
MAG58
It appears I've double posted because I'm awesome. That said, here in the rust belt, all the Golf's and GTi's I've seen from the era are getting eaten alive. Could it be because they're pretty hard to kill and still run when hell freezes over here? Most likely. And your sig says you're doing a RHD build, and from the depths of it, I don't think you'll have an issue putting a VR6 into your lil Golf. I never looked into it, but they seem to be highly popular swaps so I'm willing to bet there are conversion kits for it.
OustedFairlady
Ahh, well. I'm in Mississippi, so the car's rust free. As far as the VR6 swap, I'm not sure if I'll end up doing it or not. The engine that is in the car is freshly built (saying 10k miles is really pushing it), and I'm not sure if I want to ditch the fresh 16V for a VR6. I'm contemplating just slapping a set of knockoff BBS mesh style rims and lowering it. Maybe a roof rack or something. It's intended to be a daily driver, at least until my Honda's finished.
