  1. That does not sound like fun. I have a few stories myself. I'll try to remember some good ones. If you have not seen http://chroniclesofgeorge.nanc.com you should check it out. It is a site put up by a some poor tech that had to deal with an unusual Help Desk guy. There is some pretty funny stuff there. I cried for this guy.
  2. I thought so. I tried grounding the sensor wire. The gauge just sat there with a blank stare. I guess I'll be looking for a new gauge to test it with. Thanks
  3. After my radio was stolen and console ripped out, the oil gauge would stop working then start again. Finally it just quit. I have since fixed the damage. The oil pressure sensor is fairly new. Also, the water temp is working. I have checked continuity from the sensor to the gauge. It checks out fine. It guess the oil side of the gauge could be bad. It's just strange it happened right after the radio was ripped out. I have checked every wire I can get out and they all look ok. I'm going to get another sensor just to rule that out. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further? Thanks for any info.
  4. I have a 74 with euro bumpers. I had to do some creative mounting to get them to fit. Nothing major. I don't believe the 240 mounts are a turn key solution. You may need to drill a few holes and bend some metal to make them work. The rear was the worst for me. We ended up cutting the brackets in half and reversing half of it. The 240 bolt holes were horizontal while my 260's were on a diagonal. I don't have any specific instrutions as we made it up as we went along. I'm sure there is somebody with more info. You will be pleased when they are on.
  5. Yeah, it really could have been much worse. It was more annoying than anything. I would be hesitant to approach a thief unarmed. You never know what they have or can do. Now that I'm married I can't be as "brave" as I used to. I have a family to think about. I believe in what comes around goes around. Most likely, their choice of profession will land them in a gutter somewhere with a few more holes than they started with.
  6. Yeah, there is no shortage of idiots around here. I work downtown Dallas. The garage has large gates for security. However, they seem to get in somehow. They get a lot of breakins. I may hide in my car one weekend. You can't steal if your hands are broken.
  7. Well I came back from Seattle on Sunday. I had to pick up my Z from my parking garage at work. I know, bad idea to leave it there. The picture speaks for itself. Before After The morons broke my window and console. They managed to take a broken radio. They even left behind the radio button. They were nice enough to leave my Momo shifter, Profec boost controller and DFI. In this case, crime didn't pay too well.
  8. Here is a program that may help. Also, if you have an external reader, you can run a scandisk on it. You may lose some data though. http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm Also check out http://www.dpreview.com if you have not. It is probably the largest digital photography site there is. You can find lots of help there. Good luck.
  9. Well I got it about 4 or 5 years ago. It was not cheap. They were around $500 I think. I would not get the "A" spec version though. The "B" model does just fine and is much cheaper. You can find them for around $200 now. Maybe less.
  10. You are a lucky man! That's funny. I nearly ventured into the 20lb range myself. I have a Profec A and have not been able to get over stock boost. The controller has to "learn" the boost curve. I kept trying to put it into learning mode but it never would. I had to switch it to external waste gate mode. Then it went into learning mode. I made a run in 3rd gear and luckily watched the boost gauge closely. It shot past stock boost. I let off as fast as I could. It reached about 16lbs or so but was gunning for more. I switched it back to actuator type wastegate and it finally let me program it. It is currently running a safe 9-10lbs now. Glad it worked out for you. I'm amazed you still have compression. It is a testiment to you and your engine.
  11. I was also wondering if the car show is still on Saturday at North Hills Mall. I'm going to try and make it if I can finished putting the tranny back in. It is suppose to be 100+ and I have no A/C. Joy. Nevermind, I just saw your other post.
  12. That's funny that you recognize Alamo work. When I bought the car, it had a Holly 4 barrel carb. I took it off and rebuilt the SUs. I had taken a job overseas and left it with Alamo in Arlington. I guess they used similar methods on Z cars. I am at a crossroads now. I need A/C in the car. I also am thinking of going the V8 route. So, I can spend/waste the money on fabbing A/C for this engine or start the V8 swap. Money is the biggest issue right now. I am trying to see the difference in the V8 cost and in what I can get for my parts. I just don't have the time, money, or talent to stay with the turbo setup. A nice mild V8 sounds nice right about now.
  13. Rick, does the Motorsport kit mount on the driver side? All my turbo piping is in the way. I can't find a good mounting point for the passenger side of the car. Also, anyh complaints about the system? Thanks for any help. Jason
  14. I'll try to get some pics of the piping. It's not the best though. Well I pick up the car several year ago. A couple owned it. The wife was a seamstress and did the entire interiour. I have since replaced the black carpet. Thanks to a leaky heater core. The guy took a painting class and used it as his project. He did a very good job on it. He put a ton on clearcoat on it. It had to be stored and sit outside for a little while. So, it has some bruises now. There are a couple rust spots I need to tend to. Some on the fender wells and one nice gash on the front right quarter panel. Now I just need to get A/C in it. This Dallas heat will make you drop a pound for every 10 miles you drive without cool air. It runs well. It has a T3/T4, DFI, intercooled, Profec A, Tokico shocks, 500cc injectors, etc. The intake manifold is nice. The top was welded and smoothed out. All plumbing is underneath. The turbo is fun, but it has it's share of problems. Mostly due to my lack of knowledge. I'd like to go the V8 route, but house and family may dictate othewise.
  15. Cleaned her up a bit this weekend. Figured I might as well grab the camera. There are a few runaway rust spots I have to take care of. Nothing major. The engine bay is clean, but I need to do some tidying. The degreaser went a little crazy on the intake paint. I guess it's time to powedercoat. The radiator keeps everything nice and cool. Even in our Texas heat. The Spal electric fan only comes on if sitting in traffic for a while. Hope you like it. http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/album_personal.php?user_id=619
  16. Not a Z, but scary fast. Plus it's an old model. I'm sure the power to weight ratio is silly. http://www.nonethewiser.net/542c2/Video/Run3.mpg http://www.nonethewiser.net/542c2/Video/Run4.mpg
  17. Tim, what I meant was knowing now that they installed a faulty DFI unit, I would have not given in. It amazes me how similar our stories are. They put in the first DFI and had it wired wrong. It died before the engine even cranked. Then they put in the second and the motor blew in less than a week with 14lbs of boost. Then the next engine running at only 7lbs blew in under 10,000 miles. That was when I found out the DFI was not reading the sensors correctly. It read 10lbs as 5lbs. The same with temps and throttle. The DFI is great if it is installed correctly and is working. Once I get the turbo sorted out, I'm sure it will last me a while. I did not have all the engine work you had done though. I'm have to say I'm glad I did not. When I add up all the money I spent, I could have built 2 V8 Zs. Live and learn.
  18. Hi there Tim. Sorry you are still having to deal with all this. Don't feel lonely. I'm still suffering the consequences of dealing with Alamo. Just about everything they put on my car failed. A few weeks ago the turbo bit the bullet. I'm sure it got washed by the bad head work they did before. It started blowing smoke out the back. Greg looked at it and verified the culprit. I've got a new one on the way and hope to be back on the road soon. I think your issue is a no brainer. They knew what you wanted and should have made sure it was all there. When my engine blew after less than a week, they did not want to take any blame. We eventually decided on a reduced price. Knowing what I know now about my DFI, I should have stood my ground.
  19. Anyone know of a good source for a 74 windshield in Dallas area? So far I have been told it is too old, and the ones that have it want anywhere from $270-$590. I forgot to ask if the quote for $590 included vasoline.
  20. Cool. We hope to plan a trip back there in a few years. We have some friends there we would like to visit in Cape Town. Yeah, things are much better than before. Except for Mugabe. That guy is a joke. He can't live forever though.
  21. Have you been there before? If not, you should love it. My wife and I traveled for 6 months and spent 2 in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwee. Do yourself a favor. If you see a place to eat called Nandos, go there. They make the best spicey chicken I have ever found. SA is a great place, but keep an eye on your belongings. Also, don't try to climb Table Mountain past noon. But that is another story.
  22. Sounds like Klez. One of the less favorable features of this virus/worm is that it seeks out critical Antivirus program files and deletes them. If you virus definitions were not uptodate, then that would be my guess. If it was current, it could simply be a corruption issue. If you have the Klez virus, goto www.symantec.com and look for the Klez removal tool. It will clean the virus and allow you to re-install your program. Make sure you go get the latest updates before reading any emails. Hope this helps.
  23. Back in high school, by buddy got an older malibu. It had a nice V8 in it. He noticed that everyonce in a while when he took off from a stop, it would get sideways on him. He also noticed his water sprayer was very weak. Once day we were doing his brakes and saw this little hose sticking out from the wheel well. The previous owner had plumbed a line back to the rear tires to light them up. We laughed forever about that one. When he was stopping he would try to clean his windshield and did not know he was soaking his tires. Needless to say, after that any "windshield cleaning" was intentional.
  24. I have a 74. Never been smog tested in the 4 years I've owned it. It has 2.8L NA with turbo. Never had any problems. My understanding is anything 24years and older. I didn't write the laws, so I may be wrong.
  25. Well I went to fire up the Z yesterday, and for the first time she didn't. I tried again after work and it fired right away. However, my valve cover breather looked like a smoke machine. As I see it I have two choices. I can do a "cheap" rebuild and hope it lasts me for a while until I have the funds for a conversion. Or I can park the Z for while until I have the funds. My big obstacle is I am currently engagment ring shopping. I hate to part it for so long, but I don't want to spend much more money on this engine. I guess I need to start adding up the cost of a rebuild. I forgot to mention, I also have a very nice custom aluminum radiator. Together with the Spal fan, I have trouble getting it to warm up. Even here in Texas. The fan only comes on every once in a while. So, the head should not be warped or anything. I hope.
