  1. Tire stretching input...

Tell your kid that it's the stupidest thing ever and he needs to figure it out for himself if he wants to make his car look ridiculous.

But seriously it's his car and if he likes it, who cares what anyone else thinks...

  2. Looks very clean, hard to tell from far away pics though.  Also, hard to tell if there truly is "no rust" when they recently covered up all the metal with new paint.

Looks like a clean Z though, and if it checks out up on the lift I think it is very well priced.  Here in California if you find a rust free, clean, running Z in that shape you're going to pay closer to 10K.  Just the market for them here right now.

  3. Is PayPal really the only option for donating to this site?  I am in a legal dispute with them and will never use their "service" again... Is there any way I can donate via debit or credit card?

    Thanks!

  4. I have searched the internet and this forum and found no clues as to where I MIGHT find some Black (polished or unpolished lip would work) 16x9 and 16x9.5 Watanabe RS wheels.  References on this forum to a "Takumi Project" have links to a long dead website.  I contacted the guy selling Wats on eBay only to be told it will take 6 Months to get the 9.5s :( I am getting a full trim-off repaint and ZG flare install next month. I have my coilovers and adjustable struts ready. I DON'T want to spend five months with an otherwise great looking car and the american racing 14x7s that it came on :P

Does ANYONE know where I could source a set of Watanabes in the above mentioned sizes in <2 months for <$3000 new (or even <$2000 great condition used)?  Do I just have to give up, settle for Rota RKRs and enjoy a better 17" tire selection? Any tips are appreciated!  Thanks!

I had the same issue.  Didn't want to wait 4 months for CCW to make me some custom Classics.  Went with the Rota knock offs and I'm very happy with them... For now

  5. That has to be one of the best looking wheels I have seen on a Z. They may be all over on other cars but I think that is the first time I have seen them on a Z.

Thank you!  I was surprised that more guys weren't running these on our cars.  I think I saw a ridiculously clean yellow Z running them a few years ago, but other than that, haven't seen em.  Thanks again for the kind words :D :D :D

  6. Is that the cobalt blue glow or standard blue? and do you think it would be possible to fit 2 5/8" gauges in the pods?

I think on page 2 of this thread he mentioned they are regular blue and that he thought cobalt blue would be too dark. But double check...

  7. Many advocate for a stock cam swap, IMO it's a huge effort for nothing.

For the same effort, an aftermarket cam is much more worthy of the effort. It really depends on which head you have.

From knowing the flow of the individual heads, you can set your lift, duration, and lobe centers to maximise breathing below 7,000 and wake up an otherwise sluggish engine.

Giving something with the .460-.470" lift (max on stock springs as referenced in the various camshaft threads in the archives) will keep costs down, and then the opening and closing events can be tweaked for more  power up top.

There is absolutely no reason your L28 has to be that short-shifted slug that the stock cam mandates. A mild aftermarket camshaft will give you about another 1,500 useable RPMS of power and still come on strong at 3.500 rpms like the old L24 cams did. Pull hard from 3,500 to 6,500 with shift point in the 6,800 to 7,000 range. Very fun engine when set up like that. There are a lot of cams out there that fit this description...you just have to mill through the chaff and see who is happy with theirs, and hopefully they have dyno graphs to back up their butt-dyno impressions.

Isky has a good selection of cams like that. But really, changing the springs and lash pads even on a stock head will allow more lift and that means more breathing at the top end.

I'd put a 460/470 lift cam in a car I was selling to a kid. I'd put a 500-525" lift cam in a car I was keeping  for myself! LOL

Lol! Perfect. I'll do some more research on the subject. Thanks very much!

  8. I LOVE those wheels, I just don't want to be the one who has to keep them clean! Been tossing around the idea of a set for me.

I love them as well, and I cleaned them for the first time yesterday...  Took a little while lol.

According to the company I got them from locally this was the last set they could get from Rota.  Didn't ask why, was just happy to get them.  I wish they would make them in a 16, they only make them in 15 and 17 and I think 17's are too big for our cars (many disagree, I know).  A 16x8 with 225-45-16's would have been perfect but my setup still looks nice.

Once I get my built motor and AZC Track Pack (in like who knows how many years) I'll get actual CCW classics and have them custom made to what I want in 16's.  But for now, these look great!  Stupid building a house getting in the way of my car projects

  9. Power Peak of L28 is at 5,300 rpms and is normally geared accordingly.

Swap the cam from the L24 into the L28, and it runs like the L28. Case Closed!

Better yet, get a good aftermarket cam and it will pull harder and right up to 6800 no issues....

What do you reccomend for an aftermarket cam?  Not a race car obviously, but if a certain (hopefully somewhat mild) grind is going to get me more power in the higher RPMs I would be very happy to make a purchase :-)

  10. Don't be misled, you likely make more power at 5300 with the L28 than you do at 6500 with the L24.

It's misleading like a turbo because it's pulling so hard when it pulls, when that torque starts  falling off, you think it's a big loss....when in fact your terminal speed is actually higher, and was achieved in a shorter time than with the smaller engine.

That's exactly what I'm feeling!  Okay, I'm not crazy then.  Thanks very much, great info!

  11. Well that's good. The cookie cutter goons around here make me glad I no longer drive one. LOL. Do I miss the fuel eco. yes, do I miss the crap it brought with ownership? Absolutely not! No Ragrets. LOL

It's funny as I've gotten older I've learned that somebody is going to hate on whatever it is you drive.  When I drive our 2006 3500HD Duramax Dually for towing my wifes horses around I get the comments from the hippies in their Hybrids.  When I drive our 96 2 Door Tahoe with 315,000 miles on it I get comments about why I haven't sent it to the junk yard.  When I drive our 2004 Civic that gets 39 MPG and I can absolutely run into the ground and it keeps on going I get called a "ricer".  When I take the Z out it's mostly very nice comments but of course you get the occasional hater...

What have I learned...???  Who gives a rip about what other people think lol.  All of my cars serve their purpose in their own way and I love them all for it.  Aint nobody got time for haters, lol

  12. Datsun straight six gurus, I have a question...

I have an L28 and 5 speed swap in my 71 240Z. The car pulls hard and smooth but seems to peak at around 5,000 RPMs. Anyone experience anything like this? Stock motor and dual SUs.

I remember my L24 and 4 speed pulling hard all the way through 6500 RPMs.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you!

  13. Looks good. Just so tired of seeing those wheels. Every Honda and Acura has those things out here. Regardless of my statement, they look good, and you like them is all that matters.

Most of the riced out Hondas and Acuras around here have all blown up or have been wrecked. Weird to see mostly stock econo boxes these days, pretty nice actually lol.

Glad you think they look good, so do I :-)
