  1. I believe this is the Arizona Zcar setup but is this the 13'' rotors or the 12.2'' in the back?
  2. Nice progress ! Thanks for sharing as you go along. Can't wait to see the final stance of this beast after you get it aligned. Oh and also the numbers..... this car is gonna be FAST I have no doubt!
  3. Any idea where the 9 pounds difference comes from ? 68 lbs is quite close to what's given for the R200. would be great to have weights to compare 240z stock axles (u-joints style) and Z31turbo CV's or any other CV axles that are commonly used for conversions (like wolfcreek?). This is a great thread by the way! I could add (weighted on a cheap digital bathroom scale): 4.8 lbs : 2 1973 OEM tailights (so 2.4 lbs each) 15 lbs : 1970 OEM rear hatch glass (with vertical defrost) 6.9 lbs : urethane air dam with brake cooling ducts for '70-'74 z (naked). Bought from MSA 10 years ago (actual p/n on the Z store 50-1411) (xenon part number 3124 stamped in the back)
  4. Thanks for the link. I was just curious to know how much weight I would *not add* by not going for a R200 with Quaife/Z31turbo CV axles conversion. I guess not that much... but this STI diff conversion would be a lot cheaper so it's very appealing!
  5. Anybody has weighted their STI R180 or stock open R180?? Can't seem to find a figure for that. I have read about 75 pounds for the R200 (not sure if there's a real difference between open and LSD for both?)
  6. Hello there. I'm not a frequent poster on forums but I read a lot! I have a VQ35 slowly taking place under the hood of my '73 z too. Anybody can give the right size of alternator belt to use for our swap? This means a belt for a VQ without power steering or A/C. I have taken some rough measures a while back but would like to confirm with the guys that are already rolling their swapped Z's ( if 240hoke or EMWHYR0HEN could chime in?? ). Exact lenght or even better part number would be good to know for everybody here !
  7. Nice progress. How much power are you expecting from this engine and at what boost levels?
  8. Wow! That's some wide and light wheels. After years of searching the various Z forums I had come to the conclusion that the widest wheels I could fit with only coilovers and some fender lip rolling was 17x9 offset+12 in the back and 17x8.5 offset +4 or 5 in the front (245-40 tires all around). What free lenght of springs do you use front and back and did you check for full lock steering clearance of the tires vs the frame in the front? You have a nice project going on by the way. Looking forward to some updates soon!

    280zx interior at night
  10. well I called the shop that rebuilt my axles and the guy said that he didn't change anything that could affect the lenght. he only buffed the bearing tracks and changed the boots.....he could not have mixed any parts since he did them one after another, and he said that the only thing that can affect lenght would be the shaft itself. I thought maybe the axles I got were for a z31 300zx but they were bolted to rear control arms identical to mine and the set showed years of use so that doesn't make any sense. I got a right and left for sure and I put them side to side and the difference between both is about 3/4'' just like in your pics John. did you measure them from the outside edge of the flange. I'm gonna measure mine tomorrow.....I don't have them with me right now. I'm gonna have to go back to see the guy with a barn full of parts that sold me the parts and search in his stuff if he has any axles of the same type but shorter. If I can't find that I think I'm gonna have to have mine shortened. is that expensive ? and does that affect reliability ? thanks for your help !!
  11. I searched for hours on the net before beginning this swap and I just don't understand why these axles would be too long. Is there another model of Z that came with CV-axles with 6 bolts on the wheel side flange (disposed in 3 pairs like a triangle) ??? I really need help with that ! thanks
  12. sorry ! my mistake . but I don't know how to delete it.
  13. Hello everyone, I have a 1982 280zx 5speed non-turbo that probably started its life as an automatic since I found out when I blew my diff that I had a 3.54 R180. so I decided to upgrade a bit and put a 3.9 R200 and CV-shafts from a turbo 280zx. To do the conversion I bought a 3.9 R200 and a set of used axles still bolted to the suspension tables so that I had the matching stub axles. I had the CV-shafts rebuilt, ordered new bearings, bushings....etc and bring the car to a mechanic to put all the stuff together. The car is at the garage and everything is bolted and went fine but now my mechanic called me and he just cant put the axles in the car : he says they’re too long ! Actually he managed to put the shortest one on the passenger side but he had to unbolt the suspension table to squeeze it in. With the table hanging at the end of the suspension travel there is probably less than1/2’’ of play left in it. The other axle is about ¼’’ longer. I also had bought the snap rings that were supposed to clip the axles in the diff (from a nissan dealer) but my mechanic says that they don’t fit and he didn’t find any that can fit there. I just don’t get it ! I thought everything should fit since turbo 280zx have the same body than mine and came from the factory with a R200 diff and CV-axles. I’m sure the stub axles, spindles and shafts I bought came from a 280zx turbo since they were bolted to identical tables than my car and the shafts were bolted with 6 bolts to the stub axles. And I had the right and left side from the same car. R200 diffs are supposed to be all the same except for the driveshaft flange and mine fits perfect. The only thing I can see is maybe the shop that rebuilt my shafts put a different head on them or modified them inside or something. I know that they didn’t have a lot of experience with this type of axles and they couldn’t find new boots anywhere close and had to order them from the states (I live in Canada). I will call them tomorrow morning. Has anybody here done this conversion on a 280zx ? Or went through a similar problem and know what can be going on? Any info or suggestions that can help solve this problem are greatly appreciated !!
  14. Just to get the thread back on track, the VG30DETT is a stout engine but it's very heavy for a V6. The RB26DETT might weight about the same but it's so much easier to work on and there is a lot of choice of upgrade parts. the VG30DETT is not even an option for me since I can't find one with low mileage and it's not very easy to swap in a 240z (I think there would be a turbo in the way of the steering linkage). I personally think that at the speed that the aftermarket is reacting to the VQ there will be much more upgrades options in the next years for that engine. I also think that the aftermarket following will last much longer for the RB series than for the VG. For what I want to do with my car (street car and weekend track car mainly for lapping events) horsepower number is not the most important thing. I'm not looking to make a dyno queen. I think that I would get into traction problems with over 400 whp anyway without slicks or flared fenders. the more I think about it, a wide, flexible powerband is what I'm looking for.
  15. Cool, you did an awesome job for the mounts, it really looks bulletproof! If I choose the VQ35 swap Iwould do the same kind of removable engine cradle. Is your engine mated to a 5 speed trans? Does anybody know if the exterior measurements are the same for the VQ30 and VQ35 blocks?
