  1. I bought an 8ft chain tonight, I'll take pics tomorrow of where I actually attach it to remove the motor from the car.
  2. I guess I could get a really long chain as well, but I'll try to do it with a bolt first.
  3. This motor isn't going back in the car. I have an 83l28et to put in eventually but I still have to pull the motor/transmission from the 78 to get the 5 speed to put on the 83 lots of work. I'm going to go buy a new chain later today, the one I have has huge hooks on it, will get a new one and try either the tranny or intake bolt tomorrow. Thanks for the help guys. Chris
  4. Thanks Warren, I'll see what I can get the chain down to.
  5. Well, so far no luck. Here's a photo of what I have on the rear where the mount would go on the 83 and 78. Anyone have any thoughts? I can't get a 12mm bolt in there, doesn't appear to be any threads.
  6. Thanks, the exhaust manifold on the rear of both the 78 and 83 have abolt to fit the bracket, the 73 doesn, though I'll see if I can't get a bolt that will go in there and old the bracket as well. Appreciate the help. Got the driveshaft out of the way, not to get the chains on and start unbolting the tranny mounts.
  7. I did a search but was unable to find any info, I'm in the garage now, so any help would be appreciated I'm working on pulling the motor/tranny out of my 73. The motor didn't have any place to hook up the chains like my 83 motor and 78 have, so I started to pull the attachments off the 83 to hook up the 73. Works fine for the front, but doesn't for the rear. Anyone have any input on where to attach the other chain for the rear of the motor??? The rear attachment from the 83 needs a bolt to fit over, and the 73 doesn't have that bolt. Appreciate the help, pics later today.
  8. oh man, that sucks. Did they not bother to mention that in the ebay auction?
  9. cool, just the info I needed as well.
  10. What were you planning on putting it into?
  11. Ah, this was a question I had So this means I can take the transmission off the 78 2+2 parts car and put it on the 83 l28et motor, to put in the 73 240 The parts car gets better each day as a deal!
  12. I took my parts car out for a spin today. Just a quick test though. Quick history behind the parts car. Last Sunday I picked up a 78 2+2 that has some major frame rust, apparently something on the front suspension rusted out so the previous owner parked it for 5 years before I picked it up. Yesterday I got a new battery for it, and hooked it up. I siphoned the gas out of the tank and put some fresh stuff in. Took a while to fire up, but finally did, and after 4-5 minutes of running it quit missing and would rev up through the range. I didn't drive it yesterday because I was concerned there weren't any brakes, so today I hooked the ebrake back up. We had to disconnect them and hammer on the drums as they had seized up. After getting them connected again I removed the block from the back tire and started the car up, let her role down the driveway a bit and applied some peddle, amazingly I had brakes! I didn't drive the car very far, just up and down the street to try to get a good feel for the transmission. Currently the plan is to take the 5 speed and put it onto the L28ET motor sitting on a stand in the garage, and drop that combination into the 73 240. I'll also be pulling a few other things off the parts car, hopefully the dash, hood, headlight buckets, and various other engine bits I'll need for the ET motor, such as the water pump. My initial goal is to get the motor and transmission in the car and get it street legal. Then I'll work on other items, such as suspension improvements. Eventually the 240 will be a daily driver and autocross car to occasionally substitute for the 350 in both duties.
  13. Well, I'm picking the 78 2+2 Sunday evening. I think it'll be a great donor for parts!
  14. I'll have to double check which books I got with the car, and order the ones I didn't get. The turbo would be legal in SM2, as long as the car has a motor from the same manufacturer in it. I will definitely be doing a lot of searching, I've already seen you guys ripping into those who ask first without searching
  15. The car was actually either Red or Orange before' date=' the doors came off a parts car from the previous owner, a 74 260 I believe. I've got some plans for it, not sure what my timeline will be, but I hope to ship the car off to the body shop later this summer. I'll probably go with a nice deep glossy black though. Just need to figure out what I'm doing with the body first, definitely going to shave a few things, though not sure if I want to touch the door handles. Anyone have any input on the pictures I took after removing the oil pan? I'm not versed enough to know what I'm doing yet, though learning. A buddy of mine thinks the crank looks machined, I told him I believe they came that way from the factory, but am not positive. I was reading http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/rebuild.html last night. I've got plenty of books that came with the purchase as well, so I have a lot of reading left to do.
  16. Where are you at Silent? Something about your picture looks really familiar though I can't figure out what it is.
  17. I purchased a 73 from a buddy of mine who owns www.zcarkits.com. I got a great deal for the 73 with motor and transmission, and an 83 L28ET on an engine stand. The history of the motor is unknown for sure, but rumor from the previous previous owner is that it was pulled from an 83 that was totalled after 3k miles, I'll hopefully be able to figure out more of a history as I tear into the motor. I'm just getting into the project, there is a LOT of work ahead of me, and a lot of planning yet to be done on what I'll be doing with the motor. I'll most likely be building an SCCA SM2 autocross car, though whatever I build will be street legal so that I can drive it around town when I feel like it. I haven't really even gotten started yet, but I'm looking at a 78 2+2 for a parts car tomorrow evening. The 73 I got was starting to get parted out for a kit project so I've gotta get some body work for the front. I'll be working on the project more this weekend, trying to keep an active blog/photo gallery of the project as I go along. Blog here Photo gallery here Anyways, I just wanted to say hello! Hope to be active searching and posting around here for the many questions I'm sure I will have.
  18. Wow, that was hilarious! Made me stop watching 24 from Monday night on the Tivo!
  19. I wasn't quite ready to make my first post here yet, but then I saw your location. Fairfield eh? I graduated from high school out that way, Vanden in 95.
