  1. ALright just after I got the 82 zx ->ET swap done, i bought a 77 280z (troy's old a, the san antonio zsport guy if you know him. Im putting my l28et into the 77 280z now. Anyway I have TONS of 82 ET swap info but nill for the 77. I need help finding info on the 77 ignition harness. I have on my computer that awesome write up about swapping a l28et into I think a 79 but I don't know how much that helps with a 77. BASICALLY i need help with specifically the ignition harness part and I could use my info from the 79 write up if you guys could tell me how much is different from 77 to 79. It should be about 3 wires right? http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=103728 that is the swap write up i have on my computer courtesy of bumble z. That should really be all i need for the wiring right?
  2. wow, alright so as i thought the transistor doesn't apply. I never found it in the ignition harness in the wiring diagrams, but i suck with reading those anyhow. Appreciate the reply amigo.
  3. simple question: what the hell is the ignition system transistor you all speak of that can be bought for $2 at radio shack? I know what the condensor is but not understanding what the transistor is and what its purpose is, or even if I am supposed to have one in my 82zxt anyone have a description and/or picture?
  4. problem: no start A quick question, when I did the 82 l18e -> 82 L28et swap I swapped in the 82 ET wiring harness and ecu as well as an 82 ET dizzy w CAS, coil, ignitor. Now I have a couple questions with the ign wiring. I pulled the plastic cover BEHIND the fusible links where the green fuel pump relay is and I spliced 4 wires from the plug in there into the matching color wires (green-to-green, black/white-to-black/white/ yellow to yellow, yellow to yellow). Are these supposed to be like that? I just took the 4 wires in the back of the unhooked plug and spliced them into the 4 same colored wires in the chassis harness. Also, Im having a problem with the semantics of "transistor." What exactly does the transistor look like? Is this the ignitor? Is it necessary to have in my swap? I have the noise condensor hooked up and know what that is. I also ran one wire from the clip next to the ecu to the thick yellow wire on back side of the ignition switch (12v switched) as well as ran a wire from the same clip to the ignitor... I assume this wire signals the coil to spark? ANY help would be appreciated, I already worked for months to get it running once so now I want to shoot this thing
  5. I don't really know if this is the best place to ask this question: I have a buddy who is getting a Z garage off the ground and I am helping him get setup. The question is what is the cheapest and preferable easiest software to make accurate repair order estimates? At my shop we use a zillion dollar delphi system to pull up the listed labor hours. My buddy charges $60hr for labor and gets his parts delivered with his commercial delivery contract via carquest, oreileys, and advance so I quess parts cost would come from there? Im not sure how most shops do the pricing anyway as i am just a technician and not a service manager or director.
  6. so what if you had a front fire? Is it possible that tank fumes would burn in such an event?
  7. Alright I have been doing plenty of searching on here and on Zcar and I can't find the thread that I ran across a month ago regarding emissions removal. It has an entire list of all the emissions components that you want to keep, and those that can be pulled. Can someone direct me to this thread or a similar one? Ps: Tony I have read your commentary on the other emissions threads, I already know your thoughts. peace, one love, respect. You got it, just don't fill bash me=) pss: Also its for a drag car application not a DD, and the emissions may even be going back on the car once the proj is complete cause I am sort of a treehugger
  8. block sorry. was tired. brave...bah it worked awesome! =)
  9. i just zip tied the chain tightly to the side of the head. Worked just fine. I don't understand why everyone has to walk the tight rope with the block of wood.
  10. uhhh yeah so that part about budget..... SC/turbo setup eh?
  11. Think newbie mechanic (me)+starving Z specialist mechanic with shop, + connections to machinists and fabricators, and loaded junkyards nearby... it means i can do ALOT on budget =)
  12. As for the exhaust, I knew i was going to small I have a pallnet right now for the stock barbed injectors, dunno if I upgrade to 550's if i can still use the rail, if not Ill definitely get another one from him, i hate the stock rail more than onions. As for the rebuild, there was a mild port and polish, mainly to remove rough areas and casting marks other than that, machined the gasket surfaces, valve job, and forged internals I was under the impression that the stock turbo cam was fairly good for the application...? I could afford to go better than the r200 open, just not something too rich for my blood, what would you recommend if i wanted to go stronger and put the power down more evenly? Oh and I would prefer to keep my axels in one piece =)
  13. Thanks for the reply. My only concern is that right now I basically have a one wheel drive car. Going LSD can be done with certain 300zxt diffs and aftermarket LSDs, etc but it seems so much cheaper to go solid, and less breakage. Is that valid? Im kinda aiming for cheap and dirty numbers =)
  14. I am looking to make a 450hp drag car, and at the moment I want to see what I can do on budget so Im not looking for the greatest setup out there just fairly strong and LOTS of power. I am going into this expecting to break alot of stuff, but want to stay safe as well. Alright so far this is what I have and it is not that much, I won't go into the tiny details... 82zx GL with l38et, 83 t5 borgW forged internals, fully rebuilt balanced motor (spreen racing san antonio), rebuilt t3 (majestic turbo), 13lb flywheel with a crappy ACdelco OEM clutch for now no emissions no AC Interior stripped pretty much stock everything else. Very soon upgrades: Megasquirt fuel and spark intercooler boost controller electric fan electric water pump(the jeffp CSR) exhaust including DP - 2.75" mandrel bent straight pipe solid rear (no idea what to go with for cheap and strong) don't know if i should tub it with 450hp?? one of those super light uncomfortably hard plastic race seats maybe a cage (dunno yet... ideas?) upgrade to a gt35r turbo bigger injectors (dunno what CC is appropriate yet) better fuel pump (dunno what is hi press and cheap) rising rate FPR As with my last post I know all of this seems vague:hs: and probably a little "newbie", but this is a serious project of mine and I have been sneaking around on here for a couple years now and have read all the threads about solid rears, cages, injectors, fuel pumps, megasquirt (even though all that is another language to me), back halves, LSD, transmissions, diffs, etc. And I am actually building this car with a Z mechanic buddy of mine, but he is a little new to building track cars, and I have been a mechanic only long enough to know how much I don't know. I guess I am really trying hard to figure out what is appropriate for my application (450+hp turbo drag car) because this will be my first true drag car. Really appreciate the help guys.
  15. Awesome! And I'm even aiming for more than 400 and and complete drivetrain upgrade (still rolling around ideas, probably a strong solid rear) and maybe tub the rear. Im sort of new to 400+hp so I'm sure Ill be finding out alot of things shortly.
  16. My seemingly non-technical question actually serves a technical purpose which is why I posted it in here. Anyway this is my first post in a LONNNGG time. Normally i just troll around sucking up you guys information like a sponge. ANYWAY to the question.... How many of you guys actually get the front of the ground with your l28e/et during a racing launch? If you guys have, please tell me what kind of power your motor makes and what your setup is like. I am still throwing around ideas for a very high powered l28et (still not sure what hp I am aiming for) and want to know a little about how my ZX might act out on the strip and im curious to see what it takes in the motor/drivetrain area to get one off the ground. Sorry if all this seems vague but your input would help alot.
  17. I had all kinds of the same trouble with my l28et swap. could not get bell house flush on block, motor mounts would get close but not enough to bolt em in. Could not get the motor at proper angle. 10hrs no progress my solution: pulled tranny out, pulled motor back out, reinstalled the clutch kit and flywheel. bolted up the tranny to motor while out of car, attached chains to motor @ a perfect level (didnt use an engine leveler), kept motor mounts loose @ moto and insulators loose on chassis. Dropped it in nice and slow, and it took no time at all. Everything slipped right in place. 2hrs tons of progress.
  18. I hope this is in the right forum. Im tryin to organize a san antonio meet for june 11 5pm at La cantera mall (IH10 and 1604). We would meet at the malls valet parking lot ($5, if the free section in valet lot is full) and check out the cars, then go get some PF changs. Anyway if you hybridz folks are interested let me know and ill make sure we have enough room in the valet section. Im a valet so i can swing it for us. Anyways id like to see some of the zcars there so RSVP here.
