1. yeah, what custom lock said! when your putting injectors on a 6 cylinder, a general rule of thumb is that what ever size injector you have is how much horsepower they will safely support. Its pretty crude, but as you can see by the formula, thats about how it goes. If you wanted to be on the safe side, get some DSM turbo injectors, I beleive they are 450cc. should be enough for a little extra cushion as well... McAdam
2. wow! that is a nice swap. total sleeper! he even left the chrome bumpers! that would be a fun car to have, totally unsuspecting ricers would be in for a very rude shock! McAdam
3. RB20 swaps can be had fairly cheap, at least in a 240sx. I completed one for under $2000. Venus Auto runs a sale on skyline front clips every once in a while for $1200. for the 240sx you can use stock drive shaft and a skyline front cross member. so, the swap itself is very cheap. not to mention that the turbo DP bolts on to the front of the catalytice converter in the 240sx. i had it running in less than 4 days, intercooler plumbing wiring and all. its a pretty nice motor. I have heard the stock bottom end is good for about 400rwhp. thats about the limit on an L28ET. so, your not gaining any hp, and your losing torque. It does make for a very nice "gee Whiz" factor though.... McAdam
4. Hey, i just found this site for the pontiac OHC. its a 230 cu in engine and the 250 and 292 cranks drop right in. I guess the hot build is a 250 crank and a slight overbore. they were pulling 230 from the factory in some trims. not bad for a 230 cu in engine. http://pub83.ezboard.com/bsohcsix just a thought. McAdam
5. what about the OHC sixes that made their way into the tempests, firebirds and camaros? I have hear that those can pump out the ponies if you can get the valve trains to stay together. just another thought. McAdam
6. wouldn't it depend on where he measures the boost at? like say if he had a 50mm TB and measured before the TB, it would be higher than after the TB, but if you measured it AFTER the restriction, the boost would be lower. so, If he had his boost gauge plumbed into the plenum and measured the boost both before and after installing a 60MM TB, it would show he gained boost. Am I on the right track or am I totally off?? on a side note, does ANYONE know where I can find pics of the LD28 intake with injectors plumbed into it for a turbo set-up?? seems to me there were pics of one floating around and either the man ifold or the valve cover was painted/poweder coated red...... 8. so, I was sitting here wondering what the specs are for the LD28 camshaft? it looked bigger than my stock N47 cam or my P90 cam. maybe I'm just being crazy or lazy. too lazy to get a re-grind and have the rockers resurfaced. McAdam p.s. hopefully, by the end of the week, I'll have my frankenstein motor from the yard... LD28 block, P90 hyd head, M30 wiring, injectors and sensors, P90 crank angle sensor and LD28 manifolds. hrmmm, all for $175, not too shabby
9. get some early Z22E or Z22S pistons. they are an 87mm bore, so you could get 88mm bore and they have a 35.5mm pin height, with L24 rods and an L28 crank, that would be a .5mm positive deck clearence. don't know about the dish or not on them tho. plus, an 88mm bore is not nearly as risky as an 89mm bore. I would imagine you would not even need sonic testing to go that route. I think I may go this route when I rebuild my short block. either that or deisel 140mm rods with a slightly offset bushing and VG30E turbo pistons in a +1mm bore. MMMMmmmmm booost! McAdam
10. so, I was thinking about making a 3.0L with the deisel rods and am wondering if I can put a 4mm offset bushing in the con rod small end. cause if I use a 300zx piston that has a 21mm pin, and the deisel has a 25mm pin, offset the con rod by 4mm on top, then the 300 piston would be effectively 4mm shorter.... it'd work, i think...... beefy rods plus 300zx turbo pistons should be fun for some boooooost. McAdam
11. I feel your pain, johnc. however we can assume that the original poster in this thread would have some "more than stock" hp rattling around in his engine. aftermarket cam, header and the AZ intake is probably good for a decent bump in hp. as long as the head was port matched. and if the head is ported and polished, along with the 300zx electronics, it would be intereisting to see what the actual dyno results are. but, I am also sick of seeing the "how much hp" question without any specifics other than "header, K&N and a cam" a cam? o.k. all engines have "a cam" granted, I have been guilty of this crime in my younger years, lol. hell maybe even recently! Ihave change my "how much HP" to "is this mod worth it" that is a better question for 90% of the poeple asking. McAdam
12. go HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page. its the FI manifold. Its super sweeeeet. McAdam
13. HERE is a post by a guy running 360rwhp and over 430rwtq on a 130,000 mile short block. thats at 20psi, he siad he regularly boosts 25psi on teh street. i bet that puts him over 400. makes for a good read tho. McAdam
14. I am gonna throw out a few things here. how about a CA18DET? just as light as an SR, only it has an Iron block. not to mention they routeinly(sp?) rev to 85.K and beyond on stock set-ups. plus, you can get a 2.0L kit for them. lets see what else... how about an RB20DET? venus auto has a sale on skyline RB20DET front clips for $1200 + shipping right now. those are solid motors and the basis for an RB24. those rev to 9K if properly built. they make some nice power too. Another option to consider is an FJ20ET. old skool motor but a badass none the less. puts the SR to shame in toqrue figures. they are the stuff of legends over in japan. try FJ20.com just trying to help! lol McAdam
15. search for posts by a guy named Zcarsmakemyheadhurt. he has gotten 400rwhp out of a 130,000 mile junkyard short block. Its all in the tuning, invest in a good engine management system and you should be good to go. McAdam
16. pretty please? anyone? i get my head back from the shop tomorrow and i already had the valves un-shrouded. I need this car together by sunday at the latest. my plan is to port the head, give it back to the machine shop and then pick it up all put back together on friday. slap the head on and take 'er for a spin. McAdam
17. well, what should I do? mod 1 would be trying to divert flow out the exhaust port leave the long side with the conventional over hang and chamfer the short side., mod 2 would be cleaning up the port by making the edge near the long side straight and angling the short side back. and mod 3 is what conventional porting wisdom tells me to do, but if I chamfered the edge near the long side, wouldn't it cause the gasses to slam into the wall?? Or am i making a big deal out of something that won't really make that big of a difference anyway? McAdam
18. DAMN!!! I always wanted to do that, get an old maxima and paint everything black and tint the windows, llower it a bit and hide a sick L28ET in there. talk about sleeper. I bet that thing is a real sleeper. 4 door, lol! must be fun to pick on rice in that thing! lol I used to have a maxima, 1981 model. lets just say stock performance was less than inspiring..... McAdam
19. I wish I could get an RB26DETT, that'd be sweeeeeet. but, for now I am stuck with the L28 (and soon, ET). A sweet single on the RB would be a T66. I think you could get the kind of power you are looking for out of a turbo like that. I saw, in person, a T66 on a KA24DE. it put down 505RWHP, I saw the dyno chart. as far as how far the L28ET can go on stock internals, wasn't Zcarsmakemyheadhurt laying down in excess of 400rwhp on a junkyard block? 11.2 in the quarter in a 280zx? its all about proper tuning McAdam
20. I am not going for turbo, yet. the car i bought (or rather took) had a blown head gasket. so, I am putting a maxima N47 head on it to get the compression up a bit and I figured I would do a little porting and cleaning up of the head while I have it apart. this is just a motor to get me by until I get my turbo motor built. just to see what I can do with it while still keeping it N/A and not going all out. by the way, check out the main page on the link in my first post for pics of the car I got for FREE, lol McAdam P.S. I have 2 P90's and am selling one, if you are interested. Its a mechanical lifter head out of an automatic 280ZXT
21. yeah, the link works, but I didn;t take out much. try it again, i photo chopped the pics. painted the areas yellow. works better now. McAdam
22. well, I have this junk N47 from a 1980 zx and I thought it would be good for some practice. all i have done as now is to trim up the area directly above the valve seat on the exhaust side and remove some casting marks on the intake. here are pics of the exhaust work, let me know what you think. McAdam
23. If you're in the market to build a motor, might I suggest using VG30E pistons and maxima desiel rods? If you got the VG30E pistons in a +1mm size, you could have an 88mm bore. the maxima deisel rods are 140mm in length, which would give you a rockin rod/stroke ratio. but, you'd need to get some bushinngs made for the small end as the deisel pins are 25mm in diameter, vs. the VG30 at 21mm like all the rest of nissan motors. but, this is good, because you could get them off set bushed by 2mm so you would have a 0 deck height instead of +2mm. I think it could be made to work pretty decent. McAdam
24. WOW! those are very nice! I like the stainless steel! and you shoull dnever have to worry about it rusting out! lol. the TwinTurbo eblem on the intake manifold is a VERY nice touch! excuse my ignorance, but are cars in sweden Left hand drive or right hand drive? I would think left hand drive, with all the Volvos and Saabs, but the turbo placement looks as though it may interfere with the steering linkage on a LHD car. McAdam
25. thats a good question. if they shaved the head .030", and it was an N42, chances are your pushing upper 10's for compression, if not more. depending on the port and polish and cam specs and what not, you could be close to the 175 to 200rwhp mark. no joke. Norm the 12 sec dual SU dude is pushing about that with a J/Y stroker set up. if its got the AZ intake manifold and turbo injectors 300zx MAF set-up, its probably right up there. get some 1/4 mile times, that will give you an indication, McAdam
