  1. I do not think the top mount manifold will work on the L28. THe intake would tend to get in the way. Topmounts are for crossflow heads, not our sideflow heads. there was a guy that had twin turbos on his L28. I think he was running twin T28's from nissan silvias. Infact, he posts here under 240Ztwinturbo or somethhing to that effect. McAdam
  2. well, I went to the pick 'n' pull yesterday to get a head. Found a few maximas with their N47's still intact. so, I was looking around for one with the lowest mileage, which happened to be 160,000 lol and as I pulled it and was checking everything, I noticed the valves looked bigger than what they should be. Sure enough, it already had the big 280ZX valves in it. both the intake and exhaust. and, the top of the cylinder block was notched for the intake valve clearance. I do not know specifics, but it was an 83 or 84 (couldn't tell, drivers door wouldn't open, lol!) it had the 4spd auto and on the tag in the engine compartment, it read L24(E) and it also said it was a 910. hope this helps some people out there looking for these. Also, it could still use a good unshrouding and it looked like the pistons were dished just a tad in the block. McAdam p.s. found a 1984 maxima there with a leather interior and a DIGITAL DASH! lol, I had never seen that, maight grab it just for fun!
  3. hey datsunlover.... I can go check one out and take measurements for you if you would like. there is a jag in the pick n pull here in phoenix. it has the I6. just let me know what you need measurements of and I can probably have them by tomorrow night.... It does sound very interesting tho! McAdam
  4. o.k. SO, I was at the yard all day making my hybrid for $175 and I pulled the M30 set-up and the injectors are all weird...... they have a top feed and a return that comes off the side of the injector!! whats up with that? can i use regular injectors with the electronics, or do I have to find the same type? Also, does anyone know who had modified the Deisel intake manifold with injector bungs and a throttle body? I remember seeing a picture of this on a turbo car. Just curious. the intake runner on the deisel manifold is actually bigger than the intake port on a P90 head. talk about flow. McAdam
  5. found another one. mitsubishi 4G64 engine. came in eclipse spyders. 86.5mm stock bore, 34.5mm compression height, 22mm diameter pin. in the diagram, looks like it has some nice thick ringlands. also, its got just a 3.1" diameter, .15 inch deep dish, no valve pockets or anything else to screw up the combustion chamber. Of course, this is assuming the Z20 rods are decent looking. never seen one. but I know the L20B rods are pretty stout. off to the junkyard! McAdam
  6. yeah, I think his screen name is DAW, perhaps? one of the mods was an L20B front cover, which is ironically the exact same deck height as the LD28. Another thing was drilling out the head bolt holes on the N/A head to accept 12mm head bolts. BMW headbolts will work. I think the rod/stroke ratio alone will be woth it, also the block should be a bit more suited to boost, being thicker cylinder walls and all...... I really want to make this work. I think it shuold perform quite well!! should make quite a chunk of torque! on the pistons, I have no clue. I just saw the silvolite catalogue listing and diagrams for them. the specs look good. dunno about the ring land thickness. but, if your running 12PSI on them, sounds decent. as long as you can keep the detonation away, should be good. McAdam
  7. well, I've been looking and looking, and now I have found it. after years of wanting to build a motor, I found all the parts necessary and I have SOME money. I want to build a 3.0L with the deisel block. my plans are (tennative, as always, barring any unforseen difficulties like my car getting stolen again) go to the J/Y put P90A head on deisel block, L20B timing cover, deisel manifolds (Deisel intake with injector bungs is NICE, not to mention the manifolds are already gone from the P90A) and a nice infiniti M30 wiring harness, ECU and all the associated. $175. not too shabby anyway, bore deisel block to 87.5mm, keep crankshaft. Z20E con rods (31 new, or $10 ea from teh pick 'n' pull) at 152.5mm, and, here it is, toyota 3VZE pistons. stock bore is 87.5, SOHC with 2 valve releifs, pin height of 33.7mm and pin diameter of .8271 vs. L series of .8267. I think I can swing that, especially at $140 a set with rings. I'll have .2mm positive deck clearance. whaddya think? McAdam
  8. yeah i can get the damn things for about $50 complete. $30 minus the cam. I got a P90 + cam + turbo exhaust manifold from a local yard for $75 when all was said and done, not too shabby! McAdam p.s. what kind of compression ratio will shaving a 280zx N47 about .030" on a dished piston motor give me>?
  9. Hoaky, I was reading the old M30 sequential FI thread and I am now interested. Anyone know how big the injectors are on this thing? they had light blue tops on them and it looked like the injectors themselves had a return line coming out the side of them and going back into the fuel rail... weird wild stuff. They looked to be side feed and top feed injectors, is this a special sequential type of injector? Reasons I want Sequential: 1. its cheap. in a junkyard, will sell whole engine for $175. they have a turbo 280zx motor missing manifolds, but complete block. Thinking maybe a deisel intake manifold, thats a really nice log design "oh yeah, i took all the FI stuff off of the motor cause I didn't want to tear it up pulling the motor out of the car" 2. this will be daily driven, lots of around town miles. Sequentail FI is better around town, with better gas mileage, correct? 3. DITCH THE FLAP STYLE AFM! its a good way to do it. I think you could really tune the piss out of this motor. think about it, a nice turbo motor, with a lil hotter cam, T3/T04E turbo, maybe audi 5000 external wastegate and a nice M30 sequential with maybe a Greddy Emanage? thanks in advance! McAdam p.s. Anyone know if an M30 does indeed have an LSD? here are links to the car it will be going in. I got the damn thing for FREE. The advertisement it was on Z car. heres a crappy car dopmain site dedicated to it!
  10. I have not personally, but a freind of mine did. He bought an RB20DET and I installed it in his 1990 240sx hatchback. Venus has quality stuff. the outside of the clip was beat pretty bad, but the motor and all the necessary stuff was all in excellent shape! I do not know about flashoptions. I don';t think anyone has actually received thier clips yet, but they do offer very nice prices! good luck McAdam
  11. hello, Well, I am getting a free 1980 280zx that I will be trailering from Huntington beadch to phoenix. Anyway, I have to replace the head gasket, I think its time for a little performance build on the head. Its an N47, so my plans were to get a maxima N47 and put the larger 280ZX valves in it and have the valves unshrouded and perform a rudimentary port and polish on the thing. Any other ideas? Anyone out there have an N47 off of a maxima that has already been modified that they wish to get rid of? looking forward to hearing any and all input! McAdam
  12. Something I always thought would be fun, take a 1987 to 1990 nissan pulsar and swap in a VQ30DE or VQ35DE with a 6 speed from the new maximas. then put the bastard in the rear and make a mid engine pulsar. those things are fun! I once had the SE version with 135hp CA18DE, it was a little rocket with that motor, i can only imagine it with 2 times the power and RWD. McAdam
  13. all I gotta say is /cartmanvoice/ "sweeeet" /cartmanvoice/ keep up the good work. I just picked up a P90 head and am awaiting the results!
  14. yeah, i have heard of those. they were talking about like shaving 7 degrees off of the duration, I am talking about 20 to 30 degrees. I will work on drawing up some stuff in photoshop, It'll make more sense when you see diagrams. Itd be pretty sipmle to set up. It uses a stepper motor and some grears. I originally came up with it as a way of retro fitting our venerable SOHC heads with some sort of valve timing and lift control. that was my main concern, seeing as how there are no DOHC or even crossflow head for us. Just wanted to level the playing feild. McAdam
  15. I would think that making these damn things seal up would be easy, with ceramics and cryogenically treated metals. ceramics for the ring seal in the head, and cryogenically tread the "ball" valve for the increased wear resistance. I had an interesting Idea one night, and I put it on paper and had it notorized,so if you steal it, I'll sue your pants off! lol!! it goeslike this get the biggest, nastiest camshaft you can find, then, this is the tricky part, youd have to "modify" a hydraulic lifter and have a way to vary how much lash is in the valve train. I've got it worked out on paper, but can't explain it without a picture. Its kind of like the difference between advertised duration and duration at .050". notice how much it cuts down on duration and lift? well, if you put a lot more lash into it, you could turn a WILD cam into a MILD cam, then just dial out the lash as you see fit for more lift AND duration as the RPM's rise or the throttle is squeezed. kind of like Vtec, or even closer to the new BMW 750(i think) variable ratio rocker arm, but still different....... enough rambling, lol McAdam
  16. well, I was talking to a freind of mine who is going into the engine import business within the next few months and he was talking to his supplier about RB's and old L series motors, they go into a conversation about some of the more wild stuff this guy in Japan has seen and something that comes up is an RB20DET head on a L24 block. After he told me this, I almost dropped the phone. Said the conversion cost him roughly $6000 U.S., which is kind of spendy, but it goes to show it can be done! I know there was a kit out there, back in the hey day of the L motors, that converted it to a timing belt. It was a japan only thing. It can be done! I'll see if he can get any more details about it from the guy. But, it seemed to me that thats as far as the convo got, since my freind is hell bent on building an RB30DET. I'll for sure keep you posted. McAdam P.S. the dude said it laid down "over 600rwhp" sounds like fun. I am still intent on making my KA24DE two heads minus 2 cylinders idea work. we'll see!
  17. is it possible that your dist. is 180 degrees out? thats messed me up on more than one occasion. If its backfiring, I would suspect that. McAdam
  18. I am assuming you have already done all the bolt on stuff, such as a cold air intake, high flow cat, custom (better) downpipe and a 3 inch exhaust... well, I would think about having your manifolds (both intake and exhaust) extrude honed. not the cheapest mod, but they almost doubled the flow on a mustang 5.0 manifold of a freind of mines. perhaps a custom turbo manifold? I dunno, I'm just throwing out ideas here. They key here will be flow. Go up to the 60mm throttle body and port match it to your intake. a 60mm TB will outflow a 50mm tb by about 40%. perhaps a mild port/polish job in your head? Also, I think about 2.5in is as big as you want to go on the IC pipes. as someone suggested earlier, unshrouding the valves will help. how about a bigger camshaft? from what I know, the P90 had a pretty wimpy camshaft stock, and the NA P79 was wimpy as well, but better than the P90, as you could still be safe with a turbo as it didn't have much overlap. unless you have the P90 hydraulic head, then a custom grind is the only way for you. On the injectors note, generally on a 6 cylinder, the CC's is about rougly equal to the horsepower they are capable of throwing down, thus a set of 550's will net you about 550 hp maxed. with the power you are looking for, I would suggest some mistubishi talon GSX 450cc squirters, as you can get them form the J/Y and they will be cheap. sorry for the long post, hope some of it helps, lol McAdam
  19. A DOHC SET-UP FOR A L28?? yeah, I wish someone would come up with a decently priced alternative using some other nissan 4 cylinder heads so that you could get the thing with factory parts. .... muahahahaha!! now, this may be feasible if only there was a DOHC head readily available that will fit on a L20B motor..... oh wait, there is! http://www.nissaninfiniticlub.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40742 now, that thread is useless without this thread....... http://www.malvernracing.com/php-bin/phorum/read.php?f=6&i=102&t=1&PHPSESSID=6d60c3a5aa7332138bde87fd7043986d have fun with this one. I knwo I will as soon as I find someone that can heliarc aluminum fiarly well. McAdam
  20. hello all, Well, it finally happened. someone bought my '89 240 coupe and I will be getting a '72 240Z! I already have the performance bug, so heres what I wanna do... let me know what you think. keep the stock block for now, but bolt ones are as follows... 1) I have a set of 40mm phh(?) mikunis on a short runner manifold and the car already has a header on it. 2) I also have an electromotive optical trigger ignition, not sure what model, but its a big gold box with fins all around. those are getting bolted on. 3)I am leaning towards an L26 stock cam as it was 256 degrees as opposed to 248 for the L24's,anyone have one for sale? its stamped with a "C" on the end from the factory. 4) I am looking into a Maxima N47 head, I think it would be great with the tripples and a header, especially since I would not have to do anything special to get it to bolt on. anyone care to take an educated guess as to how much a properly running and tuned setup like this would make?? I am hoping for about 150 at the rear. but, more is always better! thanks! McAdam p.s. I am gonna rip off the U-pull it to get my head, they have a LD28 in the yard, so I'm gonna pull the head off of that, put a gas N47 maxima head on the block and throw the manifolds back on the engine, kill 2 birds with one stone, lol! get a maxima N47 and an LD28 crank for about $160.
  21. check this out. I bet a lot of you forgot about the VQ35DE that came in pathfinders and QX4's starting in 2001. http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?userSearch=int&userPID=1000&userLocation=All+States&userIMS=&userInterchange=DD%3D%40BO&userSide=&userDate=2001&userDate2=2001&dbModel=54.27.1.1&userModel=Nissan%20Pathfinder&dbPart=300.1&userPart=Engine&sessionID=297&userUID=0&userBroker=&userPreference=&userPage=2 check it out. for those of you looking to do a VQ35DE swap. the pathy versions were rated at 240 for A/T, 250 for M/T. i am sure these numbers are just an ECU tuining away. McAdam
  22. http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d37866953 anyone know people in japan that will ship? I think the price equates to a lil over $400. wow.
  23. http://www.nissaninfiniticlub.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26728 check out that thread. Its about a bunch of 240sx guys' dealings with someone called NightXC777 or some thing like that. I saw him post here a couple of times as well, I just thougth I would put a link to this post and let you guys decide for yourselves. best regards, McAdam
  24. tough one here. maybe get a motor from England? I beleive there are/were some good Z tuing shops on the big Isle. If your motor has 275K, just have the lower end checked. it should just need new bearings at the worst. then a set of rings and you should be good to go. Z engines are remarkably sturdy, especially the lower end. its not un common to see cars in the upper 300K with lower ends that are still O.K. McAdam
  25. I beleive it is becayuse most strokers are using a 89mm bore. Talk to NOrm, the 12 sec dual SU dude. he has a stroker crank in a stock, non bored block. you may have to notch the bottoms of the bores to get it to clear, which should not be a big deal. hope this helps McAdam
