I've got one word for you and it's the best kept secret out there....EBAY
-
It's a twin disc Quarter Master unit, but it has full face organic discs. It is very smooth and very light but will hold 600ft of torque. It is a race unit, but the street discs will tone it down quite a bit.

Actually, the problem was already solved. Take a close look at the aluminum spacer with new steel dowel pins. The other part of the equation was the longer spacer for the TO bearing. Everything is solved, it was just that I had to beat the hell out of the trans tunnel more than the typical swap. The LT1 and LS1 T56's don't interchange because the LS1 unit has a longer shaft. That's why the spacer was made.

As soon as I posted this, of course I found the thread. I guess I should have "searched". Thanks though, I appreciate your quick response.

I remember posting for my 50th time back in early March, but now it only shows 45. I've posted twice today and I'm still stuck on 45. I should at least be in the mid to high 60 post area. Anyone have an idea why? Just wondering. TIA.

Make that FOUR.......until May...

Just looking from the pictures, I'd say begin by claying the paint followed by a waxing which should restore a great deal of luster for the paint. Man, if I were you, I would not convert that M3 at all. You have a highly desirable car that most collectors would pay you a nice sum. Putting a KA or SR would be cool, but you would make out like a bandit profit wise if you were to at least get it running. Everyone is essentially telling you the same thing.....get the M3 running, clean it up a bit, and invest the profit into one of your existing projects.

No it's the JTR position. The motor mounts had to be slotted so I could push the drivetrain at the forwardmost position. I guess it would depend on what T56 transmission you're using. I'm not sure about clearance issues with the LT1 T56, but the LS1 T56 (for me at least) required some banging on the tunnel. You might be alright.

With the coilovers set at a moderate height, I don't forsee any clearance issues. I also will be using 18" or 19" wheels which will increase the distance between the lowest point of the Z to the ground. The coilovers will lower the car back down a bit. What should be noted here is that not only is this unit a crossmember, it also serves as a rigid chassis mount to reduce flex. I may not be able to slam the Z, but for what I give up height, I more than make up for it in overall strength especially when the cage is done. Thanks though. Positive critiques keeps me on my toes.

These pics show the dual exhaust cutouts and two more bracing plates tig welded to the crossmember. These two plates will also have steel plates tig welded into the interior directly above them and will be bolted together. The good thing about the crossmember is that it will provide some degree of protection for the exhaust when going over speed bumps and other small obstacles.

Man, we are exact opposites here. I had a SE-R with a T04E/T3 turbo, JWT ECU, 50lb injectors 3" downpipe and exhaust, you know...the works. It ran a 12.20 at 119 mph and I had much room to grow. I only had the Stage 2 turbo and I had a Stage 5 with 72lb injectors waiting to be installed. Mid to low 11's were in my reach. Mind you, this was a STOCK engine. No cams, no headwork, no built bottom end. I mean stock. I used to run 15psi on 93 octane ALL DAY with no detonation. However all of this changed one day when I was over my buddy Josh's house. His dad had a very clean '73 blue 240Z just sitting there. He didn't drive it for over 6 years and it still started up. I asked if I could buy it, three weeks later we shook hands and sealed the deal. I later parted out the SE-R and I'll be the first to tell you, she wasn't much to look at, but that car was a legend for taking out a Viper, Z06 Vette and many Muscle Cars (including a certain GN) in Milwaukee. I'd say do it. If I could build another turbo SE-R and KEEP the Z, it's on. PM me for pix of the engine bay. People may think that it's another ricer out econo box, but man will they learn.

The boobies are actually the areas to be removed for the exhaust to pass through. My buddy who welded the arm, did it as a joke to pay me back. Once the areas are cut, he'll tig weld a contoured piece of aluminum where the cutouts were made.
-
The trans x-member is near completion. Cutouts have been drawn on it to show where the dual exhuast are to pass through. Two steel plates were tig welded onto the frame rails for strength as well as on the interior floor. Two bolts on each side ties the x-member into the body. Before anything was welded, I had to strip the underside and interior for a clean tig weld. That was a nasty job, but I got it down to the bare metal. I'll re-undercoat the entire underbody after I sand down all of the surface rust. The aluminum driveshaft is next followed by the rear end conversion. Then I'll only be 25% done.

The main issue I had was that because of the 3/8" spacer plate between the engine and the T56 transmission with the engine mounted forward; I had to beat the hell out of the tunnel to make room for the bellhousing. I also had to make sure that the reverse lockout module had room as well as the passenger side. I had no issues on the drivers side though. I had to beat it in three spots.

This was posted three years ago by Jeromio, but it is still so true. I am still tired from beating that danged tunnel. It was more intense than: any work out I've done any marathon I've ran any sexcapade every time I ran from the cops I'm actually sore. I said every swear word in the English and Ebonic dictionary ever created and I meant it. Read on. "Here's how you do it. Get the old Datsun stuff outta the car. Put it up on jacks. Go get a BFH. Go drink a beer. Maybe 5. Lay down under the tranny tunnel. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Think of all the bad things that have ever happened to you. All the mean things people have ever said about you. All the times you broke a bolt head off or cracked a manifold or lost a job or got kicked in the nuts or got dumped by a girl. Absorb it all. Now, realize that all of that, all the pain and hardship - it was all that tranny tunnel's fault!! Go at it! Beat the %$&^#!*# out of that thing! But that's not even really enough. You'll need three or ten such sessions. It can be therapeutic."
