I already realize what turbobluestreak was doing (which is f'ing cool), I just wanted to know if anyone has thought about taking the idea to a CNC facility to have it done in a mass production process.
-
With so much interest with Z owners wanting a DOHC head similiar to the O.S. Giken unit, shouldn't someone contact a CNC Machine shop that can create one? I'm not here to say that it would be cheap, but if a production run was created for 20-50 pieces, the overall costs can be shared by those who really want it. I remember reading a Turbo magazine a while back that featured Bob Norwood's 5000 HP 4 cylinder Acura Integra. He used one head from a V8 program on the 4 cylinder unit. He would the first one I would contact regarding a built from scratch head. If not him, what about our own JSK Engineering? If the head could be built for reasonable cost, the development of the timing chain and camshaft profiles would be another bump in the road.

Mikelly, you are absolutely right in that it could very well be a regional thing. I guess I should've explained myself further. Regarding my V8 swap, most guys consider what I'm doing as cool but others have reservations about it. Man, you can't win them all. I just wanted everyone to simply stop calling each other ricers. Like Rodney King said after the LPD whooped his butt, "Can we all just get along?" Love, Peace and Hairgrease.

What is really funny to me is how we label others. People are so quick to call another a ricer it's ridiculous. Do many of us realize that a good deal of American muscle cars consider us RICERS? Once you tell them you have a V8, SR20DET, RB26DETT, or a 2JZGTE, guess what....you're just a modified ricer. A ricer isn't just a Honda, Nissan or a FWD. It's the Supra, RX7, 300ZX, 350Z, Evo and all modified import cars. At the track on Sunday there was a RWD Toyota Tercel w/ a 3TC engine and a T88 turbo that ran 8.8 ET. Guess what, people in the crowd called him a ricer. A "ricer" is just a term used by those who fear gettin' their butt handed to them by a non-American vehicle. We need to realize that whether or not imports in your area are stock or modified cars, try to eliminate the term ricer and call each other racers. It doesn't matter if you're doing 19's or 9's, at least the guy/girl is doing something most just TALK about.

Are there any more LT1 members out there with dyno numbers?
-
I was looking at my LT1 on the stand and studied the factory coolant feed tubes in the rear of the heads. The whole thought process behind the reverse cooling was to be able to raise the compression while keeping detonation in check. So my question is, has anyone ever retapped the rear entry of the heads to any degree to allow more coolant flow to the heads and use larger AN stainless braided lines to feed them? In this could work, in theory the engine would run cooler and allow more aggressive timing. Am I off base here or on to something?
-
I think that the term "ricer" has been blown out of proportion. Any 4 cylinder car that has an exhaust and intake minimum and the general public considers you a ricer. I used to own a SE-R with a 4 cyl. turbo that looked stock on the outside. No big wing, stock wheels, no stickers and had a child seat in the rear. Guess what? I was called a ricer, a wannabe. Do you know what my revenge was? When I started to run low 12's 6 years ago and knocked out the V8 guys at the track (even some with blowers or NO2) they then considered me a "racer". Regarding Honda's, I was at the track today with Garrett, Ivan and Mat. There were a bunch of Hondas with B18 swaps running mid 13's all day. That is nothing to sneeze at. Hell, there was an EVO VIII that looked stock on the outside, including the stock Potenza tires and he ran 10.87 at 127mph. Do you think anyone would have the balls to call him a ricer? He can take out crotchrockets!!! So, take what you hear with a grain of salt, and overlook the ones who talk sh*t and listen to the ones that DO SH*T!

4L60E OR T56 YOUR CHOICE AND WHY FOR THE LS1Z
240Z-DET replied to LS1 Z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
I'd prefer the T56 although you have to learn what rpm you need to shift in each gear to reach the lowest ET. Yes, it's a greater challenge and has a steeper learning curve, but it should be faster in the 1/4 mile. Look at most sports car today and compare the manual and auto versions. The manual is consistently faster in the 1/4 mile. An automatic is more beneficial (more consistent) when someone is bracket racing. There are some instances where an auto can be faster, but overall a manual makes you feel more intuned with the car. Let me step off the soapbox now. -
Thanks again. Before I install the turbo system, I am going to run the LT1 stock and make sure that everything is functional (i.e. get any bugs worked out). It is an intercooled set up and I intend to run only 8 psi on it until my spare shortblock is machined.
-
MAS280, what size headers did you use on the LT1, 1 5/8" or 1.75"?
-
Those with LT1's, what is your LT1 w/ the T56 hybrids putting down to the wheels on the stock engine? (Headers and exhaust mods are fine) What I'm trying to figure out is how much of a gain is there with the deletion of the A/C and power steering. If you have a LT1 with an automatic, please feel free to post your info too. Hell, anyone with a LT1 please post stock or modified dyno numbers and or charts. TIA.

The reason I looked so sh*tfaced when I rode in Garrett's Z was that I didn't expect it to be that fast. I had a 322WHP turbo SE-R that was way scarier than the Z, but it shocked me that a '83 turbo engine propelled that car like that. Another reason for the dumb a** look I had was that I figured that my LT1 should put down at least 270WHP and 300ft/lb NA which was comparable to his dyno chart. Of course, the torque curve would begin sooner, but damn his Z shocked the hell outta me. I don't see why more guys aren't doing this. You could have a low 12 second Z car for less than $3K invested. There's not much out there in terms of dollars that could touch that performance level. Garrett, you almost had me and I thank you, but the LT1 is goin' in. I'll be there next Saturday at Da Grove takin' sucker bets on your Z. "That dude in the blue Z, man he's slow....wanna bet $100?"
-
The LT1 really has the advantage in potential, so I've come back to my senses. I already have 90% of the components needed, so I should start what I;ve begun.
-
What I think 280Z V8 meant was that there are quite a few SBC's available. No one is trying jump down your throat or anything, but the search function should be used extensively when in need of info. It's even cool to PM a member who may just provide you with info based on his/her experiences. No harm, no foul.

I'm not a convert yet, but I am a believer. I've assembled 95% of the parts needed for the LT1 turbo. Now I just need the nickel and dime parts i.e. the stainless braided lines, the numerous AN fittings, hoses, blah blah blah. You know, the stuff that quickly adds up to $1500 before you know it. $1500 in a L28ET and I'm doing 12's. Hey, for what it's worth, I may just finish the LT1 and afterwards, build a L28ET. That's the best of both worlds. I wonder how I could hide a second Z though?
-
Man, Garrett really has me thinking now. After I went for a ride in his car on Sunday and I am really contemplating switching to the L28 turbo. If I sell all of my LT1 components and buy a L28ET conversion, I'd have over $3000 to invest in the turbo system alone AFTER I buy the ET engine and transmission. The boost onset was so smooth I could not believe it. It nailed me in my seat. I'm flip floppin' like a presidential candidate. I never would thought a Z with a stock turbo L28 would do anything for me. I was dead wrong. As of now, I am evaluating if I am going to continue with the LT1. Garrett, when I see you again, expect a beat down. A nice one, but a beat down none-the-less.

Yeah, you got me. It was my fault. To make things all right between us, I'm gonna steal your car once the brace is on it to even things up. Mat and Ivan gonna help me do it while Guy looks out for any 5-Oh's (and I ain't talkin' 'bout Mustangs either). I hold grudges for years. (just kiddin')

The largest wheel I'll use will be a 19". Here is a pic of the rear wheel that's going on my Z. http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=3539470093 It's a 19X10 with a 4" lip. It's a 5X114 bolt pattern with a low offset. The fronts are 19X8.5 with a 2.5" lip. These are the Davin Speed SP1 wheels. Not quite 22's, but at least these should take some pressure off of you.

First of all I want to thank Mat for inviting us all to his home for the BBQ. I had a good time meeting everyone there was real cool, even the MF who tried to run me over. I had my first ride in a S30 turbo conversion and I must say I doubted that it would've been that fast. A couple of years ago I was going to do the swap, but I didn't think it was worth it. Garrett proved I was dead wrong. I am still sticking with my LT1 conversion, but I have much respect for the 280ZX turbo conversion. Those who are thinking about it, DO IT. Mat, I accidently left my rear diff brace over at your house, so I'll try to get it from you later. Other notes; Evo is a pimp, Garrett is a player, 80LT1 is a mack and Mat is Magic Don Juan. Next year, we should all have our cars running so I hope to expect an even larger turn out where we can also plan either a 1/4 or road race around a specific date. Otherwise, I hope that everyone I met keeps in touch and send me your email for pix. Love peace and hair grease.

These are going on my Z when its completed. These are the Davin Speed SP1 wheels. They are three piece forged and are also available in an anthracite gray finish or can be color matched to your Z. I am converting to a 5 lug set up so I can use them. http://www.imagestation.com/pixami/edit.html?id=4142577126&album_id=&ru=%2Fmypictures%2Finbox%2Findex.html

As Scottie eluded to earlier, "The GNZ is dead. Long live the GNZ!" At the very least, a part of the Scottie's GNZ will live in Mat's Z. Mat, it's been worth the wait and I can't wait for a ride!

24 Valve DOHC head almost done!
240Z-DET replied to turbobluestreak's topic in Fabrication / Welding
The successful completion of this head will change EVERYTHING from current to future projects for a whole lot of people, myself included. Damn, that is so sweet. I feel like crying, especially after seeing what OSGiken wanted for their DOHC head. If you can make it affordable, you will have a LONG line waiting for it. Put me down for sure. -
I'm in town on business so if anyone is available PM me. I leave Thursday evening. It would be cool to meet anyone here. I hope to hear from you. Thanks. Rob Williams '73 Z awaiting a 350/T56/R230 conversion. Milwaukee, WI

Regarding the installation of a T56 to an older GM V8, is it possible to utilize a 153 tooth flywheel using the stock bellhousing? I cannot find a clear cut answer to this question in the search function. I ask because I want to use a Quarter Master organic dual disc clutch with a hydraulic throw out bearing. The TO bearing will also serve as the slave cylinder according to Quarter Master. Is the reason one cannot use the stock clutch due to clearance issues? If so, this maybe a viable solution. The dual disc set up can hold 600 ft lb of torque and should have a fairly light pedal engagement.

Every bit of rpm is beneficial when properly mated to the correct sized turbo!! The SR20 can also benefit from the Greddy rocker arm guides to prevent valve float and rocker arms flying every where. I am just trying to get you to seperate personal feelings from fact. There is one insane MOFO I know of who has a stand alone ECU and is consistently shifting at over 9K on a "stock" head! PM me for more details.
