  1. Alright guys, i have original paint, no bonda work at all, couple dents here and there, the usual roof dents that plague zs door dings, minimal rust, very minimal, and windows are already pulled out.

What is a reasonable paint quote i am to expect to get for painting the car, zcar orange again, this time with a clear coat to make her look shiny...expecting to go with a two stage paint, paossibly a three stage but probably not.

I went to a body shop nearby body shop, they said that a two stage with them doing inside and out, removing everything but the engine, i would have to do it myself, stripping the car down to the metal and then fixing blemishes from that point and then paint; their quote was $9,000 for a "show quality" job. Now i feel that to be somewhat reasonable, but not the job i was lookin for, maybe another day when i have that much cash to squander.

What would i expect to pay for a nice job; no orange peel lookin paint, probably color sanded, and clear coated, probably two or three times?

just checkin with what you guys have experienced; could you possibly post pics of your cars painted as well with you quotes so i can get a better idea?

My buddy in san bernardino can do your car for 2-3k or so. Thats body work, primer, paint and color sanding and buff. It would be done with dupont chroma base and clear. He does this for a living and does side jobs. Im thinking he would need your car for 3 weeks or so and you would have to bring it to him stripped. Pm me if you want more info.

  2. would you mind sendin me a quote on price for the project? what would you charge? whats material cost?

If i had the time i would, but right now im pretty swamped at work and at home with my car. What would you want done exactly? Pm me if you want with the details and we can go from there.

  3. Yes, you have to color sand clear. Most dont know this, but when a body shop paints your car they color sand it and buff it before you get it back. If you have a place like macco or one day paint and body paint your car with a single stage, you can color sand and buff it as long as they put 3-4 coats of paint on it. Don't color sand single stage metallic colors.

  4. so did you have to do that because you used one stage paint. thats all I have done so far. not sure if two stage is easier or just more expensive. I think with clear coat it adds depths and shine, (right or wrong) and what is involved in doing it that way?

You color sand and buff with 2 stage as well. Any time you paint a car, if you want that glass smooth finish you color sand and buff it after painting. If i didnt tell you it was single stage you wouldnt know the difference. The depth and shine on this car is as good as any 2 stage ive ever used.

  5. what is colour sanding? It certainly brought out the shine.

I wet sanded the car with 1500 sand paper, then buffed it with a cutting pad with compound then a polishing pad with polish. Then i washed it and hand waxed.

  6. The wheels are 17x7's with tociko springs and struts. The spray gun i used is a Kremlin gravity feed. I used just over a gallon. The paint gets a pint of hardener and a a quart of reducer per gallon, so you have almost 1.5 gallons of mixed paint. I didnt mix it all since i knew i wouldnt spray 1.5 gallons of paint. The car has 5 coats of paint on it. My buddy art color sanded and buffed it yesterday and i VERY happy with the results. Its a smooth shiny orange mirror right now :)

  7.

Well, thats the same guy i got the paint from, and the color is correct but its not lacquer, its acrylic enamel. I know, i should have used a 2 stage but money went else where and i used the less expensive paint. Im EXTREMELY happy with this paint (BEST SINGLE STAGE IVE EVER USED!). Im in san bernardino ca with the car right now, and i just color sanded and buffed her out. Its a pearl now, nice and shiny and glass smooth :)

  8. Nice looking car. Can we have more angles!

BTW if you dont have the original rubber strips from Nissan, and you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them, take a look at my bumper conversion thread from about a 10 months ago. I had links to some stick on rubber trim the works fine.

I was going to order them and pay an arm and a leg, but now i'll scratch that! I'll be placing an order this week for the stick on stuff. Thanks!

  9. Looks great, love the paint. What all did you have to do to the spoiler to look like that. I just got mine and am not sure if I should paint it black or sand it down and clear it.

That a quick sanding job with 400 then sprayed it with acrylic enamel (satin black). I put a couple drops of hardener in the paint before i sprayed it. I hope it lasts a while before it gets all chipped up.

  10. Can the people you bought the paint from mix a color from a color code, or is it just what they have available? Because I want a one stage, and that stuff looks great

I would grab a gallon from them off eay, or get 2 and have some extra. You can get there reducer and hardener or just get a universal acrylic reducer and ahrdener from you local auto paint store. Its good quality stuff!

  11. With help from a few freinds i got some work done this weekend. I installed both windows and regulators, door latches, quarter glass and some weatherstrip. Im starting to see the finish line. I can't wait till this car is all back together.

  12. The roof section on a T Top ZX is probably much stronger, ridgid, than a Z roof. The openings for the tops is formed into channels, the center section is multiple pieces of sheet metal sandwhiched together, all that formed and stamped steel is much stronger than just a flat section of roof. I think most of the strength in a S30 or S130 chassis is in the inner and outer rocker panels and the trans tunnel.

I agree, the roof on a z is very light weight steel. I think with a little reinforcement it would be very strong and work just fine.
