The last night removed the rest of the sound deadening crap off the tranny tunnel.

Then welded up the rear strut towers this morning

  2. Very nice!!!!

Trust me, I know how people pick the craziest things out of pics to comment on, but why not take off the door catches? We cadmium coated mine and they really were always a point of comment/example of the car being "so clean". Maybe you aren't to that point, which I'm sure's the case. But since you're so darn close to them... the doors on mine stayed shut anyway (in the shop, that is).

Again, SO NICE! Great skills, man.

Thanks man!!! Yea haven't got to that point yet. Just getting some of the major repairs out of the way and testing my fabing abilities. I have never done any body work except for buffing paint. Really enjoying building this car and seeing what it will shape out too. Taking a break on it tonight. Need to just relax before I design a rotisserie for it. Then it's going to get the new floors and frame rails. Then of course a full SCCA legal roll cage.. So did you pick up that car over the weekend?

  3. At clutchdust-- is is a bone stock f54 block w/ flat tops n42 head. With a mild cam around the .400 lift with around 290 duration. Also a lightened fly wheel. Header. Triple 44mm mikuni's. A 5 speed tranny. 3:70 LSD R160 subi diff. This is a street car driven too and from the track. It has ground ctrl coilovers w/ 275 springs. And az brakes front and rear. Nothing else.

Yes I agree a Vette will out run it in a drag race but it's going to have to be a Z06.

And for the money at a 1/5 the cost.

  4. You can go to pick and pull or any junk yard pull a lower end out of an 81-83 280zx non turbo motor. It's an f54 block w/ flat top pistons in it already. The pull a n42 head off a 280z or find a p90 head W/ the n42 head you wil get close to 10:1 compression. The a good came w/ about .500 lift w about 300 duration. Isky makes a great cam for pretty cheap. Then a good set of 40mm or 45mm triple side draft carbs. Pull a tranny out of a 81-83 zx as well good gear ratios. That's where I would start. My buddy has this combo and his 73 eats 90% of the cars on the street and eats most vets and 911's on the track. Very inexpensive except for the carbs. You will pay any where from $800 and up for used carbs w/ manifold and linkage

  5. Great first run, Robb! I love the sound of the triples.

Coming from someone with maybe 300-400 track days, I'd say you did very well! Just remember, a turn is ALWAYS a fail if you don't get that apex! Fun stuff. It's like golf, there's no such thing as a perfect round! (Well, unless you're Leh Keen or Tiger Woods). I can't wait to get my project done (that I haven't even bought yet) and get out to the track! You're in Rocklin. I'm actually picking up the next project in Sacramento this week sometime. Would love to see yours while I'm in town! I live in Redding.

Peace out, and very good work behind the wheel! Keep it up!

Thanks!!!! Had a blast. That's why I am going nuts on building mine. The only thing that is slowing me down is $$$. Wish it would grow on trees

Not working on the beast tonight didn't get any sleep last night. But tomarrow night will start prepping the body for a ton of stitch welding.

  6. At least download the SCCA GCR from their web site (scca.org) and use the roll cage rules (Section 9.4) as the basis for your cage design and material selection. They have 61 years of experience with cars crashing on a road race track and their specified designs save a lot of lives every year.

Have all the SCCA rules downloaded. Will be diffently building the cage to thier specs. Makes class entry's a little easier

Right now going to be doing the NCRC open track days to get the time behind the wheel. Just had my first track day on Sept 23. Had a blast

    Used my buddies car

    It's a 73 240z with a f54 block w/ flat tops, P79 head, all stock. Triple 44 mikuni's header and lightened flywheel.

    Here's the vid

  7. I have only about 12 hours into my build so far. I have a 11 month old so the only time I get is an hour or 2 during the day and a couple hours at night if I done have a honey do list going

I guess being a mechanic pays off sometimes

Finished smoothing the welds last night and filling the old antana hole

    Here's some pics

  8. If it is a track day car and nothing more, then you're free to do what you want. If you think you might race autox or door to door with an actual sanctioning body, you can quickly make the car ineligible for a bunch of classes by doing things like subframe connectors.

Figure out the class first, then build the car to suit. And I would suggest you look really hard at 75_5.0L_Z's cage for a street car. He doesn't have halo or A pillar bars. The Z just isn't tall enough to get those bars far enough away from your head unless you're pretty short. I know I'm not alone in the opinion that a full cage basically renders a Z a track only car, because you really don't want to get in an accident without a helmet on.

Not too worried about that. My biggest concern is safety and riggity. I drive a jeep with a true full cage in it daily and not much more room than the z. I can't stand half cages do to the fact it's only a half cage only half the protection. After being it a roll over in high school in my buddy's truck. Is full cage in anything fast or slow for off road use and street use. If in an accident on the street in the z or jeep it's gonna hurt no matter what. Just saying. If I end up wanting to do a certain none modified classes then I will build another z. But for now I am going custom look and safety
