  1. I own a 1973 Datsun 240z... Just to get that out of the way. I need to upgrade my headlights... they are honestly the worst headlights I have ever seen. All of the 240z's I have seen have headlights just barely on par with a first generation VW Beetle. I have the MSA Headlight Upgrade Harness to install but I really need to just get some new, non-sealed beams. This seems like a simple task, but it is not; it is unreasonably heard to find a decent upgrade that conforms to all laws and standards. In addition it is next to impossible to find straight forward simple answers as to these laws and regulations any where. (E marked/ECE headlights are illegal, but the bulbs are etc. It's just to confusing). I need this car to pass inspection still and one of the headlights just went out which prompted my idea to upgrade. So, if there are any Z owners in the St. Louis, MO area who is running a decent H4 set up legally or know any of the laws about this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I am currently interested in the pair sold by John on www.h4lights.com which is a pair of Narva XB3 bulbs and the Autopal E-marked lamp.
  2. Found the solution to the dome light from MSA, it is not as simple as they claim the install is. Steps: 1. Remove the dome light entirely from its location (disconnect the wires and remove the entire console) 2. Completely disassemble into the three basic pieces, a black box, a lens cover and the metal siding for the lens 3. Take out the old festoon style bulb from the metal prongs 4. take a pair of metal cutters, angled works best, and clip the unnecessary metal off of the prongs (the metal overhanging from where the bulb sits) *Be careful, the prongs are held on by small rivets, I broke one on accident and it was a pain to replace* 5. Reassemble the entire console and insert the new LED bulb and attachment, it should sit loosely but will be able to be pushed in fully *There is a plus and minus side to the bulb and the prongs, though not at all marked, if it does not turn on at first flip the points on the festoon node* I will try to upload some pictures.
  3. NewZed: Thanks for the info, I had heard it somewhere but I just wanted to be sure. I guess I have nothing to worry about. ZT-R: When you finish your install, if you are able to, please leave a fairly detailed description on how you made everything fit correctly. I have been monkeying around with the thing recently and still have not had any success. If I cannot get it to work properly in a few days I will probably return the part and get a new LED festoon bulb from superbrightleds.com instead.
  4. So I have just a few wiring problems with my 240z I could use some help with: 1. I need a new ground wire for my ignition, my current ground wire is frayed beyond belief (just upgraded to the Pertronix ignition). 2. I just put in a new 60-amp alternator and heard that it will destroy the stock wiring pretty quickly, is this true or should I worry about it? 3. I am planning on upgrading many of the lighting to LED's, could somebody who has done this leave a quick synopsis of what you did (part numbers, if new wiring was needed, if you needed resistors, etc...) Lastly, I started on step three by purchasing the LED Dome Light Upgrade from MSA. Though I bought the upgrade specifically for the 1970-1973 240z, 1973 is the car I have, the pieces I received were too large for the dome light. When I asked MSA if they had sent me the wrong part they said, "No, it just takes some moving around to fit." Well I tried every possible placement and either the upgrade would fit and I wouldn't be able to press the light on or the LED's would not fit. Has any one else attempted this upgrade and, if so, how did you do it? The dimensions are a 35x35mm square with a festoon attachment, it is a 4x4 grid of LED nodes. I am now even more confused because in my research I stumbled upon a post by Mezzz, on classiczcars, who claims he got the same upgrade from MSA but his fit perfectly and looked like this:
  5. Thank You everybody. this is going to be my daily driver, and the fatal collision was a head on accident at 40 mph. I am upgrading the brakes and putting in strut bars, as well as some new seats and a new seatbelt.
  6. Hello, I am looking for many ways to upgrade the safety of the S30. I have a 1973 Datsun 240z, no modifications beyond small things like the oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. I recently lost a family member in an accident and they were driving a top-safety pick, 5 air bag 2009 brand new car. Seeing how much damage can come out of whats supposed to be a top-safety car, I would like to make my car as safe as possible: 1. Racing style, strong seats 2. Racing 5 point Cam-lock harness 3. Air Bags if possible 4. Sway bars 5. Strut Bars 6. Any modifications you have made that increase the safety of your Z If you can please leave links to install info if applicable or leave your tutorial Thank You
  7. Okay I simply want to know if I can take a new 10" Booster I have from an '83 280zx laying around, and put the Master cylinder from the same car into my '73 240z (Manual, not Automatic) without any clearance issues. I here people say this works by rotating the booster to fit the firewall mounts without problems and I here other people say that it won't hookup without any difficult modifying. Which one is correct?
  8. Nigel, the information you are giving me is great, it is exactly what I am looking for. The problem is that my OEM brake booster and master cylinder need replacing along with most of the stock brake parts. Should I just get new ones or refurbish my old ones.
  9. I know about those, but I keep hearing from other people that the Reman ones dont actually fit correctly to a stock brake booster, but I will give them a try.
  10. I have spent hours going through about fifty pages in the brake section looking for just a detailed installation of a 15/16" Master Cylinder and larger Brake booster in a 240z. I have a 1973 240z that I would like to put the Silver Mine Stage 3 front brake kit on and so far my only options are waiting for an elusive and expensive 280zx Master Cylinder or dropping close to $350 on a Wilwood 1" Master Cylinder and an unknown Brake Booster. Could people who have cheaper alternatives please post links to the parts and maybe a quick guide. I really don't need a 1" cylinder and all of the current guides are not detailed. Thank You
