  1. Try http://www.car-part.com for all kinds of parts. Also try http://www.junkyarddog.com These let you search dismanteling yards all over the states.
  2. Greimann: Thanks for the info, I thought that as a general rule of thumb anything that makes more power usually decreases gas mileage. BTW, awesome car you got there!!
  3. Can anyone explain to me how ignition timing can effect gas mileage? For example, would you get better results with the timing a little retarded or more advanced. BTw, I have an 81zx. Thanks.
  4. smoov280zx: I think maybe you have an n47 head from a maxima. Just from what i've seen at the junk yard none of the z n47 heads had a sensor in the actual head and the maxima ones did.
  5. Well yea, if you want to do it the easy way...lol:)
  6. Mitch, I have the same setup right now. What I did was use the thermostat housing from the n47 head and extened the cylinder head temp sensor to it. What I found on the n47 thermo housing was that one of the sensors has a "threaded sleeve" that comes off. I used some jb weld to bond the chts from the p79 to the sleeve and voila!...now your chts screws into the thermo housing. I've been running this setup for like 6 months now with the help of others here and no problems other than the nagging pinging. I wouldn't recomend raising the compression that high for a street car unless you can get gas that is better than 91. Otherwise it seems like you have to retard the timing so far that you defeat the purpose of higher compression.
  7. I wouldn't consider turbo with this setup. Way too much compression. You're looking at 10.6 - 11.0:1 depending on the head gasket you use. Brandon 81zx
  8. What are the advantages of a rising fpr versus an adjustable one? As far as exhuast i have a free flowing muffler and 2.25 piping up to the cat. I still need a header, piping from header to cat, and a new cat, my old one is clogged up. Unfortunatly no one will modify the piping between the header and cat for emission purposes. Right now a new cam is financially out of reach so that works out anyways.
  9. Okay, so far i've got timing back to where i originally had it (slightly advanced), the inline resistor and a full tank of 91 octane. Thats the highest rating we can get in cali. These few things were enough to stop the pinging, i might even try advancing a little more. Later on this month i will buy a adjustable fpr and replace my fuel pump. It's starting go out.
  10. Alright, I just wired in the resistor. Quick question though, since the temp sensor has two wires, should i put one on each wire? Or will just one work? So far i have just one on. Also, the highest ohm resistance i could find was 560. Will this be enough? Still raining outside so i can't do any road tests yet.
  11. Hopefully when I get this motor dialed in it won't be too much of a temp solution. I really like the upped compression. Definatly more "punchy" in the lower rpm's. Today i'm gonna try retarding the timing a bit and use that resistor thing you mentioned. Here's a couple engine pics: I know, I need better camera.
  12. Yea, I lost a little throttle response from backing off the timing, that sucks. Can you go into detail about the resistor some more? I'm a bit lost. I just got back from radio shack empty handed cause i wasn't even sure of what i was looking for. What type of resistor would i need? Thanks for the help.
  13. Well I just backed the timing a bit, well actually quite a bit. I must of had the timing advanced way too far. Engine no longer pings!!! Power increase is definatly more noticable now. Too bad its raining today, been spinning the tires through 4th without trying. Doh. Should I still try that resitor trick? Engine pulls very smooth now, how much will this help? THanks for your guys help.

  15. Thanks for the info, i'm gonna give the resistor a try tomarrow. I'm hoping between that and more octane boost my car might not ping till i can afford the fuel upgrades. Shock96: Thats just what this is, temp solution. This motor has 220,000 miles on it! I know nissan motors are pretty tough so i'm gonna push this till the envelope pops and begin my turbo project.
  16. Yea, i put on an n47 head... i'm not sure of the year though, but it has round exhuast ports. I haven't adjusted the timing yet and i did install a 180 thermostat. I'll look into the resistor on the temp switch. What exactly does that do? Will passing smog be a problem once i adjust it properly?
  17. After sorting through the temp sensor problems i was having the car is running now. She runs really good too. Not to metion I fixed the major exhaust leak. Previous owner broke 4 exhaust studs and just left them, go figure. So i can actually hear the engine now. The only problem i'm dealing with is my car is starting to ping at over 4,000 rpm. I knew this would happen. Other than racing gas or octane boost (too expensive) what are some ways to fight detonation? I've been told is caused by too much air and not enough fuel to the motor, is that basically right? I'm wondering if a fuel pressure regulator would help? Anyways, thanks for your guys previous help, my baby is back on the road!!
  18. Well the car runs, pretty well too. I got all the thermo connections hooked up. I took her around the block last night and man, it felt good. First time i've heard my engine without a major exhaust leak. Too bad on the way back home one of water lines blew out and i sprayed anti freeze all over the block. The car started smoking everywhere as i drove back into the garage. Once thats fixed she should be ready to go. I still have to perfect the timing and whatnot, and i notice someone said to get a lower degree thermostat? Right now i'm using a 195, should i go lower? 170 maybe? Thanks so much for your guys help.
  19. Hey guys, thanks for the input so far. I was able to fit the CHT sensor from my p79 into the bottom left port on my p79 thermo housing. So i'm hoping to bolt that back on and everything should wire back up the right way. And as far as running rich, i'm not positive. I didn't let the car run very long since the temp guage didn't work. But i'll deal with that next. I'll post if it works. if not its back to the drawing board, or the p79.
  20. Hey guys, I recently just finished my n47 swap on my 81 and i'm running into a few probs now that i got the motor to start. To my surprise the motor turned over very easy and idled quite nicely. Definatly better than before. Anyways, my problem is the thermostat housing, if you notice on the n47 there is no CHT sensor, its actually on the thermostat housing. no big deal i say. I just lengthened my wires from the CHT to the thermostat housing and plugged it in. Now i'm not sure thats gonna work just because the plug fits. Secondly, my temp gauge doesn't work either. I'm not sure if i hooked that up right either. From what i've read in the archives the gauge is controlled by the thermal transmitter which is the upper left port on the housing. Is there a way to test if thats working or not? And if its bad where can i get a new one? Sorry for all the questions, but i've gotten this far and now i can't drive my baby. I just need someone who's done this swap to kind of guide me through. All help is appreciated
