  1. Very good choice Gotta love bmw's and the M3 is a fine car.... as long as nothing breaks hahaha
  2. Well to start off with I used a slightly oversized drill bit so they were a little easier to put in. I also used a screw driver I believe to support hte metal on the back side, this is why I put the nutserts in before welding up the lips. I also tack welded them in for safe measures. It would be fairly easy to make a tool yourself to install them and would prolly work alot better. Ill draw a sketch later tonight and post it.
  3. I just bought an '01 BMW 330CI 5 speed with the sport package. I love it.
  4. hehe it might jsut be something with more cylinders, but im not sure myself. We will see what hte L can do first. I really love these motors.
  5. Too orange for my taste. But I dont like flashy colors to begin with they beckin for attention... and tickets. I think color is something you have to decide for yourself though If you like it go with it. Choosing paint is one of hte hardest htings you can pick out on a car haha especially when you sit down in front of a couple color books. Anyway though you cant loose Z's look good any color from puke green to poo brown. Heck I think they even came from the factory in those colors
  6. Hey BRAAP, Thanks alot for your input. And your exactly right its not the news I wanted to hear. I did do a visual inspection of the valves on #6 as best I could with the head still together. In hindsight I should have taken the valves out and double checked everything and I may do so before I put the motor back in. Your right the cylinder walls looked fine, and except #5&6 the piston wear looks great. The scoring/scratching also conincided with the side the FOD was on. The rings were definitly stuck and there was absolutly no carbon build up these pistons are clean as a whistle below the top. Im sure they were compressed due to detonation. Im not so sure its the end of the pistons though I didnt have to remove much material at all to get the ring gaps widened. But as much as I hate to say it, the L28 isnt worth it too me. I have everything back together and I plan to push it to its limits. Perhaps it will hold perhaps not, but lets just say I have every intention on trying to hit 450-500hp -- hopefully i will have some dynocharts to post, or perhaps some more pictures to analize If it blows I guess Ill find another motor to learn how to work on I will update you guys with a compression check and how it runs as soon as I can. I start work next monday and will be able to use their machines to make my tranny adaptor if all goes well. I may wait till I get that done to drop the motor in. I also drew up an exhaust flange today in solidworks while I had the motorout so I may play with something there as well. ANyhow thanks for the advice everyone.
  7. OOOOOoooo I second that Z32's are great DD, I had one of those too for a year or so and loved it! Very comfortale handle great still peppy... 2 seats is the only draw back for me.
  8. Hahahah You got that right!! Mine is definitly a project, always will be for that matter. Im flattered though. I love BMW's they make great dailys, very smooth and comfortable with decent power. It will be hard to find an e36 M for 10 grand though, nice well kept ones are 13-15K for the mid 90's ones. Also they are known to be maintence nightmares, my buddy spent 10K on his in one year on maintence... he sold it for a 350z. Hoever I daily drove a E36 325is for several years (now has 230K on it) without any problems whatsoever...I just bought a 2001 330Ci and I am really happy with it. With a few suspension mods they would be very nice at the track too. SO maybe consider a E36 328is?
  9. I agree tony, and I will say that perhaps I got a bad batch. The head has minimal damage. The plugs also look great, just black. The electrodes are not burned or misshapen at all, not do I see any metal flakes on them. Shes put together now, and I plan to do all my tuning on a dyno to get my timing curve right this time and tune in more controlled circumstances then on the street. I plan to install meth and take it to 25psi. See yall at SEZ
  10. I politely disagree, the ceramic coating is worthless. Its destroyed on all my pistons not just the FOD one. Got the motor back together, cant wait to get it on the dyno, prolly be a little while though as im going ot work on my tranny adaptor before I put it back in.
  11. Here is what I believe might be some detonation damage. Piston damage was to small to take pictures of. #4 #5
  12. mm white would look good, my other favorite.
  13. 1500 for my car -- original owner and complete but badly rusted.
  14. The rubber is ugly so i left it off, I still think blue looks the best
  15. Interesting perhaps that is what it is. One thing that confuses me about it being FOD is that it is on the "uphill" drivers side of the motor.... which seems very odd, if it occured curing cranking etc I would think that the particle would have moved downward and rested on the downhill side. If it was at high speed I think it would have messed up the turbo. So maybe its not FOD at all sure looks like it though. Regardless hopefully Ive got things right now as far as timing, i know my fuel has always been fine.
  16. Hey guys, Well yall are prolly going to think that I am ghetto. And I have a few confessions to make. Four of the pistons had stuck top rings. I was able to lightly heat them up and slide the rings out just fine with no damage. I looked very closely and and I do have some detonation damage. You can see it on the head, light spongie area arround the edge of the combustion chamber particularly in #5. It can also be seen as well one a few areas around the pistons right above the top compression ring. Its not very bad though at all though but its there. I know that I was detonating a little at SEZ and before due to my large timing advance. I couldnt hear it though because I was running an open wastegate. IT sounds cool and all but its overall a bad idea. I wasnt detonating bad but when I plumbed my wg back in I caught it and ended it quick. I got a new set of rod bearings, and I used a very fine and small file to smooth out all the dimples from the FOD. I then polished it a bit with fine sand paper, then cleaned everythign very well. Then for the top land I took the fine sandpaper folded it up and ran it around the gap a couple times. Worked perfect. Im in the middle of putting everythign back together now. I dont see any reason why it wont work fine. I have a strong feeling like the FOD was done when I first built the motor over a year ago anyway I will post some pictures of the detonation damage tonight, if i can take a picture it might no show up very well.
  17. That V8 car is pretty much a turd to, the owner brought it to a CZC drag event at the 1/8 mile here in mooresville. it was cutting out on him and looked pretty hacked together..... He still beat me though lol. Im sure the kinks could be ironed out and it would be fast butttt.... it definitly isnt worth that. I usually talk to Jeff down there at nisstech he always came across as a pretty cool guy. But its been years since Ive done any buisness with them.
  18. OKay got all the pistons out, inspected everything. Block has no damage, no scoring on the walls at all. Also no damage to the crank. The bearing damage is worst on #6 with some light damage to number #5. The rest looked pretty normal, with wear I would expect. Top compression rings are stuck in all but one piston, they can be removed but takes a a little force, #6 is by far the worst. Scoring is limited to #5 and #6, with light scoring on 5. Its not really deep though, I cant feel the marks with my fingers but can catch them a little on #6 with my nail. I cant see any damage to the valves everything seems to seal and open and close find. Good bit of carbon buildup though so if this happened during the initial startup the marks could be covered up. I have pretty much rulled out welding slag, I checked my I/C pipes which have two welds total both of which I can see and they are very clean as I expected (I had cleaned them numerous times) But I guess its still a possibility. Whatever it was it doesnt matter, shes going back together since the only un repairable damage seems to be the dimples which I think I can clean up just fine.
