  1. Hey guys, Please clarify, The half shaft center sections are the same length, the difference is the length of the splined ends that are inserted into the diff.... In other words, measuring from the inside surface of the CV boot housings, the two shafts will have the same compressed/extended length.... Is this correct??
  2. Hi Mudge, I have the splined stubs for the R200 (clip in type i.e. 280ZXT) I used the half shafts for another application...... Throw me an e-mail and I'll give you the details..... Ian
  3. What trany are you working with?? I think that an 81-83 ZX 5 speed (originally fitted with a 3.9 rear) mated with a 3.7 LSD would be Ideal for a turbo given your tire dia. is around 25 inches...... Earlier trannys have higher ratios thus requiring the lower rear ratios....... Thoughts anyone??

    R160 differential

Hey everyone, First of all, thanks fr all the great advise !! This is a truly wonderful forum. Now for the question: I took the Subaru R160 out of my 240Z last week and am concerned about the stub shafts in the diff. The subaru has screw in, splined end stubs that I swapped out with the stubs from my old R180. The R180 stubs bolt right in but, I found two problems with this: 1. The splines on the subaru carier are slightly different than the Nissan R180 resulting in backlash in the R180 stub shafts when used in the R160 diff. 2. Also, the R180 stubs are longer so the dust cover sticks out away from the side of the diff. I am going to get some stubs from an R160 (ah la 510) and see if they fit better..... I still have the original subaru stubs and they fit MUCH better than the R180 stubs. I was looking at making flanges to be welded onto the Subaru stubs. Anyone got any Ideas??
  5. Hey guys, At the risk of thread stealing, I'm looking at using the 4.11 R180 out of a 200SX. It has clip in diff stubs with CV half shafts that are too long for a 240. Were any of the 280ZXs fitted with an R180 rear and if so, did it have clip in diff stubs?? Also for the benefit of this thread, will the companion flange off the 200SX fit the 240 or 280Z stub axle?? if so, you may be able to junk yard find the whole setup without having to find a ZXturbo. BTW how accessible/common are the LSDs out of the 240SX???
  6. why not change the M-bar bushings?? has anyone figured out a way to raise the back of the diff easily??
  7. Hey Everyone, I searched for posts on tranny/diff combos and didn't come up with anything...I have also put together a spreadsheet with the gear ratios from Z and ZX 5 speeds with different diff ratios and tire diameters... So the question is, what are your thoughts on ratio combos for street, autocross, and track use? since 3.36, 3.54, 3.7, 3.9, 4.11, 4.37, and 4.65 rears are available.... what’s a good top speed in each gear (1-4) for autocross and track use?? What’s a good 5 gear ratio for freeway driving?? I am prepping to build a turbo 240 street car in the 200 to 300 rwhp range so I have hp to spare for taller gearing which means less shiftin!! I was about to derive an equation correlating torque/hp to gearing given the extra hp but why reinvent the wheel if I don't have too... what do ya think?
  8. A bit off topic but may help... I too have the ST rear setup and noticed that the sway bar ends don't line up above the end link holes in the swing arms (sway bar arms are too long). This can cause binding in the end links and will be compounded by shortening them. I've seen a few guys make spacers for the sway bar brackets that move the sway bar back aligning the holes for the end links..... hope this helps good luck!!
  9. Too high a gear for what tranny?? the late model ZX 5speed with 4.11 rear and a 25 in dia tire (approximately) will give the following speeds at 7000 RPM 1st 40.7 mph 2nd 67.1 mph 3rd 95.3 mph 4th 124.7 mph 5th 167.4 mph and 5th gear @3000 RPM I'm doin 72 mph Why would I want a 3.36 gear?? with the same tranny it would yeild @ 7000 RPM 1st 49.82 2nd 82.10 3rd 116.63 4th 152.55 5th 204.76 Holy Diablo Batman!!
  10. Thanks for the replies guys.... The issue is really one of necessity.... I'm looking to build a turbo street car in the future and decided to use a late model 280 zx 5 speed coupled to a 4.11 R180 out of a 200sx since both these items are abundant in the junk yards. The problem is the 200sx diff has CV half shafts and no provision for the ujoint flange stub axles to screw in as they do on my 240 R180 I don't need/want the extra 25 lbs in the back of the car from the R200 and I may want to use a Quafe (sp??) so I want to stick with the R180 PS, hey John, you lookin to sell your extra Quafe?
  11. Please see post in suspension/chasis to reply to this... Thanks, Ian Hello everyone, has anyone converted their 240 to an R180 with CV half shafts?? if so what was involved?? I have yet to blow up an R180 but the u-joints have got to go!!

    R160 differential

Wow, I didn't know John was Brea-ees for Jed Clampitt!! I forgot to mention that the Subaru LSDs are usually 3.70 (at least mine is) and coupled with a ZX 5-speed gives worse ratios than the "BSP legal" 3.54 with a b-box 4 speed (Mr. Sedan drivin, soon to be street mod, but know body can remember what his car looks like) Hee Hee Furthermore I've got a friend who has been running a 3.9 open R160 for months with no problem and to say he is BURNOUT HAPPY with his big cam high compression triple Webber monster is an understatement!! So I agree with John, given the diff is in good shape a street Z should be no issue. If you want to get REALLY technical about it, I'd say that the R160 should be able to handle up to 180hp at the wheel all day long!! Happy Hunting......

    R160 differential

hey everyone, at the risk of losing a potential parts monopoly, I have been running the !@#$ out of an LSD R-160 I snached from a Boobaru for 3 years now with (knock on wood) no problems. Couldn't afford the quafe, like some other guys from Brea (poke poke) so I took a risk. I autoX and road race my car semi regularly. So if you can find the LSD unit out of a Subaru I bet it will be OK!! As for the standard open units, I wouldn't know, but I don't think they are as Beefy spider geer wise. Good luck kid, happy hunting!!
