  1. Bringing this thread back from the dead... (10 years!) I am just wondering what a destroked L28 TURBO would be like. Is it just a dumb idea, or would the extra revs get you more boost? I would think having the turbo would help to outweigh the loss of power/torque from the shorter stroke, as well as giving the turbo more headroom to spool higher. With appropriate head work and other supporting mods as well of course. Just something I've been thinking about, not sure if I would ever want to try it yet...
  2. So what I need now is a new fuse box... any suggestions on what I can grab from the junkyard that will work? Basically no Zs in any yards by except very rarely, but basically everything else. Or my friend suggested I try the marine supply store in the area, they should have some good choices on modern blade-style boxes with enough cicuits. I need 14 fuses...
  3. So I think I might actually do 15x7 in front and 15x8 in the rear, both with 4" of offset. This will give me the same fitment I have now with the 14x7s but wider in the rear with a larger diameter. Unless it would be better to just do 8" wide all around?
  4. So I have an early 260z with an L24, and kind of chopped up wiring inside the cabin. Basically I need to replace or repair the fuse box. Option 1: repair the clips in the fuse box itself, many are corroded or broken. Option 2: upgrade to a modern blade style fuse box, something I planned on doing eventually anyway. Now the issues are if I do option 1, the clips are apprently very hard to find (unless I have the wrong info) and would take a long time to ship in. Option 2 is easier and faster but much more expensive. Does anyone know where I can find a model of modern blade style fuse box that will work for an early 260z? I tried Google amd searching on here but couldn't find anything. Thanks guys
  5. So should I be good with 15x8 4" backspace all the way around with stock everything? Also what size tire do you have? I really think I'm gonna have to pick a set of these up, and just skip trying to deal with trying to find tires for my 14x7s
  6. So what about the offset options then? With stock brakes and suspension
  7. I really like them too. And same thing I've heard JMortensen, I Googled what I could about them and I saw one post of a guy that said he hit a curb going like 40+ and all that happened was the wheel took a huge chunk out of the curb but just minimal damage to the wheel. They come in 15x7 as well but neither 8 or 7 seem to be available in 0 offset, with stock brakes and suspension (for now...) can I run the 4" backspace? (-12mm offset) Only other option would be -32mm o.O I'd also probably throw some ZG type flares on with them
  8. Also I'm loving the price ($65/wheel), almost cheap enough to buy just to try out.
  9. So I came across these wheels and I really like them, love the NASCAR style (I swear I'm not a redneck) and I have think they'd look really good on my 260z. Just wondering if anyone has any experience/info/knows anyone with experience/info on Bassett. They're steel, 15x8 (the size I want to get) and are avilable in a number of backspacing sizes. Also can anyone point me to a thread for stock s30 offset? I can't seem to find one Thaks http://www.bassettwheel.com/dot.html
  10. I think I will eventually do this: Stock exhaust manifold, aftermarket downpipe to eliminate the restriction from the stock one, then straight 3" manderal bent out to a free flow muffler. As entertaining as an open pipe can be I see how you guys are ssying it would wear after a while. Plus I'd hate to be the guy who wakes up the block when I start my car early in the morning. My friend's L28 240z has a 6-1 header straight out to a Magnaflow racing muffler. Probably the least amount of baffling ive ever seen, and some world class pipe work. I want something similar to that, but with that turbo spool thrown in to boot.
  11. Well the car has been sitting at the shop for almost a month now One of their guys took off and left the rest of them with a bunch of stuff to work on. I'm thinking I'm only gonna have them do the wiring and then I'm going to do everything else I can myself... they at least said the wiring should be done this weekend. Of course that's what they said last week... and the week before that... and the week before that... xP
  12. I considered that but people say they can be a hassle... but maybe if it's done right. It would be cool haha
  13. These are all great responses, thanks guys. And I have no clue what's up with the ticket for the chrome tip o.O I've never heard of anything like that out here, there's thousands of cars out here with all sorts of crap on them. I've seen a LOT worse than chrome tips that's for sure. Exhaust mods are legal basically as long as it passes smog and the decibel limit. '75 and back model year cars are exempt from smog and a lot of other stuff. They just need to pass decibel tests, but those aren't required for registration so it's only really if you get stopped by a cop and he tests it then.
  14. It was fairly warm, and vacuum seemed alright but I'll try and do some definitive tests when I can (it's been at a local shop to have the wiring done... I dropped it off almost a month ago ). I'm going to relace the plugs and wires since both are fairly old from it sitting for the majority of 4 years. I'm also going to put a 280zx distributor in that I got with the car (D6K8-02) I still have to double check which igniter module it had, but I'm pretty sure it has the good 'matchbox' one, so I will do the timing then anyways. Hopefully it's just a little timing and an old plug and I'll be good haha
  15. Also the car was backfiring a little bit when I drove it. Not gunshot status but like coming off throttle it was popping more than a little bit.
  16. This is my 260z running right after I put a new fuel pump in it. It is an L24 with an E31 head, stock as far as I know. The idle was set pretty low when I filmed this and also the rear muffler was cut out so that affects the sound somewhat. Just wondering what you guys think in terms of if it just needs a tune, or timing, ot if it sounds like it's down a cylinder or something.
  17. I should look up what California considers as a muffler haha It'd be sweet if I could just not have any muffler, be lighter and cheaper haha I can't wait til I can at least drive my car even as it sits... xP
  18. I was actually thinking about something like that as well^ My friend's truck has the same kind of exits before the rear wheels. I just wasn't sure about if there was enough room out the sides of if that would cause any heat issues for the underside. My friend's truck is a heck of a lot higher than my 260 obviously so that's not an issue for him, and I haven't really seen many people running side exits on S30s if at all. I love side exits though, would the Y pipe effect the flow at all as opposed to just out the back? And what about the fumes issue?
  19. I'd looove to replicate something like this. Scare some ricers for sure... But like I was saying it doesn't really seem all that crazy loud to me, even though the guy was like right in front of it filming, it wasn't that loud when the guy was sliding away further either
  20. That's pretty much what I'll run eventually, but probably not Borlas, my friend has an L28 240z with headers straight to a Magnaflow racing muffler that sounds sinply ungodly... by far one of the best exhaust setups I've ever heard.
  21. See if I can get a good deal on piping I'd like to do 3'' turbo back to basically the most minimal muffler I can find that can cut drone some but basically be unnoticeable at WOT. And my friend has XR-1s on his 74 F250 with headers and a 360 but my 260 is louder than it (although the prvious cut out the rear muffler so all it has is that little pre-muffler thing in the middle), the exhaust shop kinda did some weird stuff like putting the x-pipe way far back and crush bending the pipes 0.o
  22. Yeah I'll probably do Megasquirt or something when I am ready to put the engine in, and just enjoy it like 98% stock with maybe a little boost turn up, then do an intercooler, then go from there. I am exempt from emissions in CA by a year or so, and the weird thing is I never, ever see any cops around whenever I'm driving. It's just a thing. i dont drive like an idiot but with my luck it would be ridiculously easy to do some stupid crap all the time and never see a single cop. If I do see one I wouldn't say, gun it at WOT with an open downpipe. Is there any real difference between just a simple say 3'' straight pipe out the back or side eve as opposed to just an open downpipe? Both performance and sound, I assume the longer pipe would make it a bit quiter and maybe more hollow, but wouldn't change performance by much if at all.
  23. Well in my research I found that the stock cam can actually be good for up to almost 400hp so I'll probably keep that. The build would initially be mostly stock except like ECU, exhaust, maybe injection, and probably an intercooler. I'd be using it mostly stock for a while before the more serious build elements come into play like an upgraded turbo or bigger throttle body and stuff like that. I've just heard some people say that open downpipes/exhaust are stupid loud and are totally impractical (even though they help performance quite a bit if done right) but every time I hear one it's actually not all that loud to me.
  24. So I'm eventually going to do a L28ET+5 speed swap in my 74 260z, so I've been doing research on the whole swap and what's involved. Now I know that the stock exhaust system for 280zx's and L28ETs are not exactly ideal for higher performance, namely the restrictive downpipe. What I'm wondering is if I were to do something like an open downpipe or straight pipe: just how loud is it? I've heard straight pipe setups that sounded like a burly V8 at idle but monstrous at WOT, I am 100% ok with that, I just would like to be able to hear myself think and not have to yell to talk to someone in the car. Is anyone here running an open exhaust of some point? I know turbos really cut down on exhaust volume but would it still be too loud realistically? And as far as the performance merit of an open setup it would be something I would like to take advantage of as my plans for this engine would be around 350hp. I need to do things like an R200+axles and the like before I put the engine in but I'm just trying to compile as much info as possible. Thanks
  25. I was pretty sure they weren't Enkeis, aren't theirs two-piece? Even so there's a noticible seam on the Enkeis that mine don't have. And haha, no I'll stick with just having these. Plus I can't afford anything really right now xP I assume I should be able to find a logo or manufacturer name on the inside of the rim or something?
