  1. Now that's a nifty tool, but not cheap. Great idea for getting a good look first. I still see an issue with not having the suspension compressed during the check unless you put a jack under the LCA.
  2. Have any of you ever heard this before and figured out what is causing it? When I raise the front of the car off the ground or lower it back down I have a creaking noise that sounds a little loud. It goes away once the car has "settled" back down under compression. I suspect the sway bar bushings, but I guess it could be quite a few things. It could be a moot point when I just rebuild the entire suspension anyways but thought I'd ask.
  3. Have any of you ever used one of these wheel sizing tools before? The one I'm speaking of I found in the back of the JEG's catalog in the local bathroom. It's around $80 but would help me out finding what I can fit on the car once I get the suspension replaced. Someone also told me that Centerline wheels can make a set of custom lightweight (17" & under 16 lbs) rims for around $600. That sounds suspect to me but maybe they have some kind of system in place. Do most aftermarket wheel shops have one of these tools and maybe save me some $.
  4. Okay I scoured the great wealth of information on the diff and just want a quick QC to keep me honest before I hit the "pay" button. I have a 79 280ZX 2+2 R-200 and am planning on a LSD unit for a 240sx open diff swap (KAAZ 1.5 way) and Z31 CV shaft swap (1986). These are compatible correct? Also, does anybody know of a good shop to do the LSD swap in the Little Rock area? What would be an approximate price for the swap (minus the KAAZ)? I've heard anywhere from $300 for minor diff pieces to $1000 for all bearings/seals etc. Thanks for the advice so far. Hopefully I'll have some money left over to get those fancy motorsports axle stubs too, but the brakes need to be overhauled and they take priority. I also appreciate the tips on eliminating the vibrations with driveline setup. I did a SR20 swap and suspect the custom driveline may not have been balanced, but will check all the angles too now. I have a vibration that seems to start around 60mph and gets crazy as you go faster. Already checked the wheels and wheel bearings. Let me know if any of you are in the Little Rock area, I have a lot of parts now that I swapped motors.
  5. Since I bought my used 79 2+2, I have had a vibration that starts at about 80 mph and keeps getting stronger the faster you go. I had the wheels rebalanced and checked/adjusted the front wheel bearings. I also tried to check the front suspension and it seemed like the inner tie rods were ever so slightly loose on both sides. I'm going to order a new set but for now it seems smooth until 55 mph and then the vibrations seem to lessen up to just noticeable. Any thoughts?
  6. Wow, I finally finished the heater core swap and it works great all over again. I should have taken pictures because I almost had the entire front part of my car out on the inside to do it. I was hoping after taking off the dash that I would be able swing the center box out over the frame, but it was too deep of a box. So I had to pull the fan box and A/C box to then slide the heater box over and under the frame. The A/C lines were empty, meaning I have a good leak somewhere. I'll get to that later, but my next job is going to be finding and fixing the vibration I have in one of the wheels. Thanks for the tips and good luck with your heater fixes.
  7. Do any of you know if I can swap the front hubs on my 79 280ZX 2+2 with some off a 300ZX for a 5 lug swap? I know I'd have to also drill some holes in the rotors but are they the same depth etc?
  8. I have an R200 in my 79 2+2 ZX. Am I correct that I can replace the halfshafts with 300ZX CV's? If I wanted to swap the axle stubs with the 5 bolts would I just have to drill the rear rotors? Finally, what LSD unit would I have to order from KAAZ etc to swap it out (180sx w/o LSD)?
  9. Belt is good, clutch is engaging, I asked to have it evacuated but suspect it was not. Since there are few R-12 servicing shops here these days, how will R-134 work in the Z and would I have to get one of those crazy mineral spirits trapping tools to get all that stuff out? Sight glass shows intermittent bubbles.
  10. Any ideas on why that whale tail spoiler won't work on a 2+2?
  11. I think I have a small leak in the H core due to the sweet smell and the windshield fogging up almost immediately when I turn it on and never going away until I wipe it away. Is the heater core a hard replace once I get the front radio piece out or do I need to take off the entire front dash to get to it? Any recommendations on the supplier for the H core? I also recently had the A/C charged with R-12 and it doesn't seem like it's doing anything with cooling. The A/C lines don't have any temp difference in them. Do I have a leak and lost the R-12 or do I have too much oil in it or do I have a bad part? I replaced the condensor, drier, and had new lines made for the SR20 compressor.
  12. Hello all, Im in AR and a few years ago purchased what used to be the family Z from a friend. It's a silver 79 2+2 RHD 5 spd. It ran good so anyone needing the L28 send me a message since I pulled it out and dropped in a SR20. The SR makes the Z a whole lot of fun now and a Mustang dyno showed 240 hp and 260 tq. I have a few parts I can sell and a few I need, for now though I'm looking to swap in a Z31 LSD unit and CV's. I read the lengthy write up and to me it seemed like there would be no issues but most of the comments were geared at S30's. I think I might also get those motorsport 5 lug snub axles...any thoughts? BTW how can I tell if a Z31 diff is an LSD by markings? Did all Z31 turbos have LSD? Hope to see some of you someday on the road or track...Sam
  13. Hi all, I'm new to the site and was referred from Zeroyon and MattK to find some support for my 280ZX buildup. I agree I am also interested in any good aftermarket suspension, diff, and brake swaps. I'm also in a bit of a bind with the 2+2 body but don't really think there is much difference from a 2 seater suspension except for spring rates? Anyways, I am looking for big brake swap parts, suspension parts, and rear stub and diff upgrades. On top of all that also looking for some good 16" or 17" lightweight aftermarket rims that will fit without spacers. I know you all have some good info on this stuff and would really really appreciate it. I will also be posting up some parts I have available from the engine swap.
