  1. Yea, we've already tried all of that. The only way we can get it to start is by holding the accelerator all the way down, and then it barely idles. My dad's been helping me, and he has 30+ years of automotive experience. Still nothing.
  2. That's a really good read, but I don't see the triangular piece that it talks about in the desmogging paragraph on my carbs.
  3. So there's no hope for getting this thing running with flat tops?
  4. Yea, I know they suck. If this was a small block chevy, it'd have been running a week ago. Haha, I'm not familiar with these engines at all. I have a factory service manual, but that's not helping a whole lot. I don't really want to get different carbs and all though. I will be putting an LT1/T56 into this thing before long, so I really just need to get this thing running with the flat tops.
  5. I really appreciate the help everyone has given me this week! Right now, the car will barely even start, and if it does, you have to keep the accelerator on the floor to keep it idling. If I'm going to start tearing into the carbs and such, I would like to simplify things a bit. What all smog components and hoses can I do away with? I want to rip off everything I possibly can that isn't necessary for the car to run. Thanks! -Grant
  6. Thanks for the help guys. Now I have another problem though. I took the carb off and sure enough, the float was stuck. I got that fixed and got the carb back on and everything assembled. Now it won't start at all. Not even a sputter from one cylinder. I took the coil wire off of the coil, and it's sparking. I'm lost now. EDIT: Just went back out and tried it agin. Now it sputters every couple of revolutions or so. I'm still lost.
  7. They're the factory 260Z carbs. Flat top I guess? The top of the carbs are shaped like a cylinder, round with a flat top. The middle of them have a dampener assembly.
  8. The top of the bowl? Isn't the bowl on the bottom of the carb?
  9. Oh ok, thanks for the help guys. I'm still scratching my head over these gauges though. I guess I might trace some wiring tomorrow. Fun stuff.
  10. Does anyone know? I'm hoping to start working on this in the morning.
  11. You can see those brackets in this pic. I haven't looked at them closely yet, but they look factory.
  12. Are there any fuses other than the ones on the passenger's side kick panel?
  13. On my '74 260Z, what could be wrong with my water temp, fuel level, amp meter, and oil pressure gauges? I'm not sure if the clock works or not. All of the gauges light up, but none of them work. My tach and speedo work fine. Also, what are the two knobs for under the dash on both sides of the car? They pull straight out, but I'm not sure what they're for. Also, the car has two brackets directly under dash under the glove compartment. they have a hole drilled in them with a rubber insert. What are they for?
  14. Alright guys, the float is stuck in my front carburetor. It runs, but very badly. Haha, it runs a full stream of gas out the vent tube, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem. What's the easiest/quickest way to get it unstuck? Will I have to take the carb off? I hope not. Any help at all is appreciated! -Grant EDIT- It's a '74 Datsun 260Z. Stock.
  15. Well, it runs. Not very well though, I gotta go check it out more in a bit. Here's a video I took of the first start up. http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c381/g9m3c/?action=view&current=MOV00001-3.flv
  16. I turn 20 in two weeks. BTW, I should be installing this thing tomorrow and seeing what it'll do. I'll update it as soon as I find out.
  17. VERY nice project there. It's amazing what some "creative" body work can hide, aye? Haha, good luck with it! Can't wait to see this thing turned around.
  18. Alright, thanks guys. If I can't get the electric pump to work, then I'll just bypass it and see how it goes.
  19. Well as long as it pumps some fuel, it'll be alright. I got it for $38 with my discount, so it wasn't that bad. I tried to find a rebuild kit for the pump, but apparently we can't get one.
  20. From my understanding, my 10/74 260Z has both a mechanical fuel pump and an electric fuel pump in front of the tank. What is the purpose in having two of them? Can the electric one by replaced by a universal in-line pump, or deleted all together? I've never heard of a car with two fuel pumps. Someone smarter than I, please enlighten me.
  21. Thanks for the link. Mine is the 306 metallic silver. You're right about the pump being non-rebuildable. Like you said though, it really doesn't matter to me. Here's what came in to work today. I'll be going home either Tuesday or Wednesday morning to (hopefully) get this thing running. I've already drained the old gas out, and put 5 gallons of 91 octane and a bottle of sta-bil in it. Now I just have to put the new mechanical pump on and check out the electric pump as well, although I'm 99% sure it works.
  22. Nice find! I would try to keep the splash gaurd and remount it on the car. Especially if you're going to be working on it. I've only owned my car for less than a week, and it's already payed off for catching bolts and nuts that I drop.
  23. Thanks man! Well, thanks to O'Reilly Auto Parts, I didn't get it running today. I ordered a fuel pump yesterday, and the dumba$$ ordered one for a 610 pickup. How hard is it to understand the words two-sixty z ? I would have ordered it from Advance (where I work), but there's not one around my hometown. I guess I'll order it myself once I get back to Tuscaloosa this afternoon. Urgh. Anyways, here's a pic from today.
