Getting closer to building new rollbar. I'm listening to and hearing all the stuff about hitting my head. AND, I don't think I'm likely to get the car under 10 seconds in the quarter with the way I'm tearing things up with just my current power level, so I would be NHRA legal to 9.99 with just a 6-point rollbar that includes door bars. I really want to try to get some chassis stiffening (doors don't close well). Anybody have any pointers on where to make the forward leg of the door bar attach to the Z chassis? I'm torn between attaching it to the inner rocker panel vs. attaching it to as far as possible down in the footwell. Post pictures of your favorite design.

Broken driveshaft-hoping to learn a lot from repair
RebekahsZ replied to RebekahsZ's topic in Drivetrain
OK, it has a light dusting of paint-but you can see right thru it. I'm re-painting it anyway. Found some 10mmX1.25 grade 10.9 bolts and some 10mmX1.25 grade 10 nuts at Autozone. Internet says that grade 10 nuts are the same grade as 10.9 bolts (said it on the internet so it must be true). The bolts have no shank (threaded to the head), but oh well. The flange is not the one that they told me it was, so I get to change the pinion flange (again) and I have one that will work. The 3in tube is very tight, I think it is the largest tube I think I would try to fit inside the 240z tunnel. Hoping to put it to the test on Friday night, but I've gotten home at around 9pm every night this week so far. The weight of this thing makes me want to make my cage out of chrome-moly. Will see what the cost difference is. -
Has anyone tried the Speedway LS1 header kit?
RebekahsZ replied to Naptown Dave's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Looks fine-awesome, actually. I really belabored this decision-I don't think it really matters as much as we think. If you put your second set of bungs further back, you can use them as either test bungs or as the primary ones if these front ones don't perform well. -

Neighbor received driveshaft. Wanted to install it today but can you believe that for $607 they didn't paint the damn thing? Why do I continue to deal with US companies??? It's a meatie looking piece, though. Should be hard to break. Heavy. Slip yoke is a work of art. -

On my shorty headers I put the O2 sensor in the collector, which is about 3 inches long and the primaries are only about 10" long. It reads fine and makes good power, clean plugs and no smoke. Must be ok. Think about access (you gotta get a wrench on those sensors, and where your wiring will run (don't melt em). My tuner asked for a second bung on each header to be able to plug into while tuning. It should be accessible from under the car. Otherwise it will run rich when he pulls the o2 sendor and installs the sensor from his test stand. -
I've tightened the shnit out of them with a BMF pipe wrench and they still loosened after a couple trips to the strip. I have done the channel lock thing and I can get another half turn on them if I disassemble and use the pipe wrench. Those darn things are like Harry Houdini. Haven't used locktite but I sure will this time. Will also throw a couple washers in the tubes as you suggest to make sure I'm not bottoming the threads-as it is close. I cut my spacers with the intent of having good thread engagement. I think it must just be V8 and VHT vs 40 year-old unibody, etc. I know there are much more powerful cars on the forum-maybe it is the repititions (or the mechanic). JMortensen, your axles are still hanging strong. One driveshaft tube and two driveshaft yokes in the grave but your axles are going strong.

Squeaking urethane bushings

And my all time favorite: leave it on jack stands for about 10 years. All of these options have helped mine not to squeak! I feel your pain. -

Try 600# springs. That stuff won't budge or squeak! Cut off your muffler? Heck, I can't hear crap over my windshield wiper motor-turn that puppy on! -
Hmmm. Interesting thought. I'll put some paint on them and see if it gets scuffed. Next trip to strip (hoping this Fri) I'm gonna loosen my droop limiters too. Will start with the back ones. That might be a factor too. You got me thinking....

Nigel-you and I seem to have a similar issue. Don't remember if I have two or three tubes of modifier. My banging is better and I now feel more of the "chatter" that I had heard rumor of. In fact, last day at the strip there were no bangs, just chatter. I finally decided to try to ignore it and to get on with any if the other issues the car has. This diff required no shims to achieve 45# wet break away. The first one i did, i shimmed to 65# break away. They both have that parking lot BANG! This car has been super reliable but the drag racing with a T56 is taking its toll. I can't seem to keep my gland nuts tight, and I have to drop the whole suspension and remove the springs to tighten them. I so hate going over the same ground over and over. But, I think the only option is to quit racing and sell the car. Getting closer but not there yet. I have the strength for at least one more year of this fickle love affair.

Finally got photos to upload. Some photos show trans tunnel damage, tearing of metal, broken spot welds, and movement along the seam. Other photos show repairs/scab patches. Then a photo shows twisting of my second cast driveshaft slip yoke. No more cheap slip yokes: have a forged one to replace this one, and the one on my custom driveshaft is nitrited billet chrome moly. -
LS2/T56/240z Broke driveshaft at drags tonight
RebekahsZ replied to RebekahsZ's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Why does it rain like a mother everytime I try to replace my driveshaft by the curb? Steep driveway and driveshaft eating Datsun are a very unpleasant combination. Soaking wet and pissed off again. -

Hahaha! glad you took my humor well. How did I get this old this quick? I'm trying to imagine how much hell my wife (aka: The Church Lady) would give me if I put that in the car with me. I'd be sleeping on your couch for a long time! Living vicariously thru you. Now, where did I leave those little blue pills? -
Greghasson-you aren't paying for the gas, you are paying for the waves! Lazeum-don't you mean litres? And you get that French chocolate! Yeah fellas, I was rubbing it in.

Just tracked it again, it is at a location 20 minutes away but they are closed on Sat. I'll spend the day with my daughter instead-that's ALWAYS best! I'm over my little hissy fit. -

New driveshaft shipped while I was out of town and manufacturer marked it signature required so instead of arriving on Friday for Sat install, I have to wait to Monday to receive it. Ahhhhh!!! Another month without autocrossing. 😩 -
Yeah, thought about the additional muffler between bumper brackets. They DQ-ed so many cars last month that they are gonna have to reform their methods. Can't race tomorrow-no driveshaft because The Driveshaft Shop marked the UPS form for signature required and I was off taking Rebekah back to Auburn. Was hoping to find it waiting for me when i arrived so i could wrench thru the night. Maybe I will have it Monday if my wife hangs around all day and they don't try to deliver when she jumps in the shower or something. I HATE it when a shipper makes it so hard for me to receive what I have paid for!!!!
