  1. I should have another rear end to put into my car by next weekend, an R200 3.36. What kind of grease should I put in? I saw on one of these posts that someone had used something to lessen the noise, I think it was a Ford product, does anyone know what it might have been?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I parted out my 1 owner - low mileage '83 Turbo car some time ago after it sustained extensive body damage in a double T bone. I have been saving this complete 3rd member for a 260Z V8 swap but my priorities have changed. I am now autocrossing so I no longer need this.

It is a complete third member including the R200 diff, half shafts (CV joint type) axles, calipers with ebrakes, rotors, sway bar, brackets, bolts and I think I still have the matching drive shaft too. I don't remember the ratio, but this was a car with the BW T5 transmission, so it may be the lower 3.whatever ratio. If interested, I can check again. When I pulled this diff from my car, it was perfect and made no noise.

    My shopping list includes:

    Triple 45mm carbs and intake

racing type clutch and lightened flywheel

    LSD for an R180

L28 pistons, not dished (1 mm over)

trick sway bars (1 1/8" front, 1" rear)

    16X10 wheels

  3. OK, we pulled out the rear end. BAD ! The ring gear looked like the teeth had been scooped with a spoon. The pinion teeth were sharp enough to cut you finger. The pinion had also been cutting the housing for the spider gears.

Now what do I do? I would like to replace the ring and pinion with a 3.36 to 1 ratio but all of the bearings are shot also. I belive the spider gears would be OK and even though the housing is scored it should not be hurt.

Since this is a rear end with the CV axels I would like to repair it. What size bolts hold the ring gear 12mm or 10mm. What size fit the 3.36?

  4. If I am figuring my math right these are the speeds that my car would be traveling at 3000 RPM. My tires are 76" around the tire. I understand that a tire jacked up and a tire setting on the ground or pulling may not be the same distance around the tire.

My car was a 1982 280ZX turbo automatic with CV joints, it now has a Chev 350 with a turbo 400. The ratio that I have in the car is 3.54 to 1 and when I am turning 3000 we checked with another car and I was doing 60 MPH.

If I replace the rear end with a 3.36 to one I figure that I will be going nearly 65 MPH.

A 3.90 to 1, which does not interest me, would be only traveling 55 MPH.

Does the 3.36 ring gear have the same bolt pattern and diameter bolt as the 3.54 and will it fit in the housing?

  5. Looks like I am going to have to change my rear end noisey rear end. I saw a post about new in the box 3.36 ring and pinions some place on her in the last 10 days or so. Does anyone remember where it was.

    Also I read a post by about a 3.36:

  6. Maybe there should be a section for the fast and the beautiful then all of the guys with "fast only" cars wouldn't feel bad.

Seriously, I'm in the Zcar for the fun. This is a great web site for obtaining excellent information. Remember, I didn't start this post.

  7. The 280ZX several posts up is my car. I bought it form a guy that showed the car and won. We have done a lot of work getting it back on the street. We kept the sound system that was in the car and added amps. We may show it but probably not. We are driving it and having fun with.

We are planning to rework the motor for more horses soon. I would like to install a new radio/CD/DVD player, it would be a great place to watch a movie. Also I would replace the rear view, which you can't see out of anyway, with a monitor for the DVD and with a small video camera in the back I could see out the back.

I would never have thought I could have bought a can that so much money has been spent on. Its a great ride. Silly, sure but you get that way when you get over 60 years old.

Thats why they make black cars and red cars.

  8. My rear end is going out it is a 1982 280ZX, turbo 2+2. Yesterday I found a 1987 300 2+2 AT with a CV rear end. I do not know anything about how good it is, about 160,000 miles. Its at a salvage. Is anyone interested?

Found a 1986 300ZX with CV axels and two extra CV axels today at a salvage.

Will the 1986 model fit in a 280ZX that has CV axels?

It was an auto trans, what gear ratio would it have.

  9. I checked the manual some more and find that they cal it a tri-pod joint, I think is the term. If I can not find the same type at the salvage, can I switch to the open u-joint rear end? Also is the CV type better?

  10. What kind of a rear end is this? We pulled a rear end out of a 1980 parts car and it was a R180. We have another parts car, a 1982 but the rear end is a 3.9 to 1 ratio, so we do not wnat to use it.

We took pictures of the rear end of the car that we are driving, a 1982 280ZX 2+2, and it does not look like either of the rear ends in the repair manual.

What is this? Please check the pictures on the web page below:
