  1. save up fpr the turbo swap. High compression is fun,,,but expensive. You can get an I/C, t3/t4 turbo, tb, exaust/down pipe, boost controler, BOV, and a turbo timer for around 3-4 grand. For the price with that many upgraded parts you could put down 250hp at the wheels easy, not to mention the torque. You could do 12's with that and have the ability to have power under boost when you want it, or a regular l6 when your not on the turbo. For the money and ease of swap the l28et is wonderful. The ony better thing would be a sbc. But id say money spent on high compression is a waste unless you are an amazing tuner, and love the NA aspect of classic z's. Above all do a search.
  2. you should do a search for dohc. there is a guy on this site who is machining a dohc head as we speak, or at least the last thing i heard was that he had it designed and was getting it all set to make. I dont know if he ever did. But people are right, for the work and money required to have a dohc head on an 128 you should swap in a rb series or 1jz. Both have for more readily available parts and would genater wonderful power. If it was cheap though I would be all over it.
  3. 1000 dollars is a big budget for exaust and a DP. You will be able to have a nice setup for that price. But for a initial mod on the engine you'll find that exaust and DP are one of the best things to do. An engine that breathes better can produce higher numbers. You may not get a huge power gain off the bat, but as you continue to mod you will be happy for doing this early down the road. Id ask around on this site for potential sellers of mandrel bent DP's and compare prices at different shops. You may not have to spend as much as you're thinking.
  4. the vg is a difficult swap to do and hasnt been done nearly as much as the sr20. I looked into doing a vg30et swap becuase there can be amazing power made out of that powerplant relativly easily. But it is a big engine, steering shaft is in the way, and youd have to custom make your motor mounts. Granted you would have to make mounts for the sr20 as well, but more people have done that swap so help would easier to find and even possible templates of mounts. You sound excited about the vg so go for it,,,If i had the money time and skill id do one,,but dont knock the sr20,,you can build those little 4 bangers up to the moon with power. Good luck, you in for a wild ride!
  5. i was wondering what Tranny or modded trans would be ideal on a z boosted with 13-18psi. I read a post about how some people have problems with slippage when they turn the boost up. IMO thats a given, more power harder on the trans,,, but after searching through past posts to find an answer I found that people have swappend in just about every trans into z's and becuase of that the most compatible is a difficult answer. Which is why i ask the turbo folks, what set-up the recomend for a streetable but solid set-up?
  6. There are tons of boost controllers out there,,,just look around. I personally would say that before you start to do anything you get a better grasp of how the car works and what you want out of it. It seems to me like you have little if any knowlege about turbo applications or the z,,which is cool, everyone starts somewhere. I suggest reading everything you can on this website, and any other info you can find. if you have any questions do a search for it first. Odds are someone has been there before. Good Luck with your possible build.
  7. http://www.beaterz.com for instant laughs click on one liners. Here you will find hours of entertainment, including rusted out cars and ricers galor. This truly is a beautiful thing.
  8. Is there a maximum amount of ways one could spell, waste of time. You do have to give the guy credit,,,i always said if your gonna do something do it right,,,he has suceeded at that all right. out of all the dorks in the world, he has to rank near the top of the list. Two words...Weiner Bisquit.
  9. add on.... my exhad a geo prism, hilarious, she wrecked it and sold it to me and my freind for 100 bucks. The frame was bent, so instead of doing a clean fix, we tied it to a tree and slamed in in reverse until the frame was pulled out enough to drive again. best car to beat on. had a five speed and emergency brake. It was great until we rolled it in a city going around a corner at 40 with the ebrake. luckily nobody was injured. It was awesome. best 50 dollars i ever spent on raising hell in a POS.
  10. my buddy is big into jeeps and jeep forums. all those guys talk about how gay trackers are, but then dream of taking one swaping a bigger engine in and turning it into a monster truck. As most wheelers know, high centering your vehicle is a great way to f*ck it up badly, so somehting like a samurai or tracker makes that less possible having a shorter body. i think people who build up trackers and samurai's are hilarious.
  11. i read this somewhere and thought it made alot of sence. IC's dont operate as a air cooler, but more as a heat sink for the hot air to be relieved in. I think a good way of looking at getting cooler air, isnt by bringing cool air into the IC, but rather taking heat off and out of it. So, fans on an IC prolly isnt your best bet for cooling her down. Water or C02 sprayers, a bigger IC, and something maybe like alcohol injection would all be far more effective, but pricey. Good Luck buddy.
  12. I hav seen far more TT setups on a v8 applications than single turbo setups. Maybe its becuase people think 2 are always better than 1, or that the setup is the only way to turbocharge a v8 etc. Regardless, for money and power a single turbo seems far more logical. Dont get me wrong Twins look fun on a v8 , but as the others have said, it would be more expensive and more custom to do 2 than one. In my eyes if you wanted a cheaper and easier way to generate similar power numbers, a single turbo setup would be the way to go.
  13. cleary your teacher is a dipsh!t. I was talking to a guy who made 313 at the wheels with proper tuning alcohol injection and no IC!!. Dont know how reliable that info is, but seemed ligit. But, if you can push around 20psi i would imagine that it was totally possible. Tell your teacher that your rick james b!tch, he should change his mind. Hope you get your 400 just to spite him.
  14. I know im prolly kicking a dead horse by asking this, and yes I did preform a search, but im to lazy to go through all the Engine Management findings. Sooooo, MY QUESTION IS...What, in your oppinion, is the best stand-alone set up for a turbo swap, in relation to cost and preformance? If you guys could point me in the right direction i can start planning on how to bite the bullet for costs and time to do this.
  15. I was browsing around looking at the advantages in different types of IC's and stumbled upon this website. Not only does it have some cool mods for turbo aplications, but it has a four page write up on how to use thier inteligent water sprayer for your IC. It actually learns your behaviors as a driver and cools the IC depending on your driving style. Check out the link, I found it pretty cool. http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_0527/article.html
  16. congrats on the build man, looks beautiful. Ill be curious to hear what kind of numbers it puts out after you break it in. You'll have to post those for sure!!! Awesome engine!
  17. I appreciate the help. With all this in mind, and the fact that i have never done a swap,,How hard is it to fab/modify the trans mounts?
  18. Question1: I know that a l28et will line up on the same engine mounts as a L28 in the gen1 models. But if I did do the swap would i need to modify the trans mounts for a t5? Question2: I hear guys talking about modded rear ends and diff when the do a swap...Would i need a new driveshaft, and or diff/rear-end on the whole set up? Question 3: Stock computer, or aftermaket engine managment, i know thats a personal oppinion thing, but any unput would be fantastic. Finally, I would love to be able to purchase an already turboed car and build on to it previous ownews work. But if i must start from ground zero im cool with building my own z. I jus wana make sure i have a genral idea of what the hell im getting into, when i do it.
  19. Im looking to buy a z in the early summer and am looking at all my options. after looking over dyno charts and other info my confidence in the turbo swap into a gen1 z is decreasing. it looks like the hp gains of a turbo swap arent as sudden as i would have assumed them to be. I suppose what im asking is, how dificult is it to bring a turbo swaped z up to about 250hp? Ultimatly thats what my goal is, i dont want something to drag, just a classy daily driver. So do i go small v8 and use the inches, or turbo and deal with the boost changes, mixture etc.? Any input would be greatly appreciated! ps looking to spend about 5-6 grand on a new z
