  1. Love the feedback. I posted fairly regularly on this site several years ago, but then life got busy didn't have time for cars. However, I love the community here and the willingness to help another member out. My update. I talked for an hour to a interstate title specialist from the Secretary of states office in Michigan. After a bunch of analysis of law and title talk, she simply asked me where I went to college. She then reminded me that most college students spend anywhere from 4-6 years living out of state with out of state plates. They also tend to be horrific drivers. Point being, I should maintain my license and registration in Michigan, and then not drive like an *******. Another fairly simple excuse she offered up was that my job requires me to spend months at a time in California, but that I maintain residency in Michigan. Then every year I should try to be one of those lucky 500 cars, or cross my fingers and hope the law gets fixed. So I feel much more at ease. It's not tough to maintain an address in Michigan, which I suppose makes me one of the lucky ones. I do think it would be awesome to have a section/sticky on emissions requirements for the different states, and ways to pass the specific tests. Lets try to keep as many of our cars on the road.
  2. I'm 99% sure that I am going to be the owner of a 78 280 with a l28et and 3 inch exhaust....no cat to my knowledge. Currently I live in Michigan, where we don't care what goes into the air. But, I may have to move to San Fransisco around may. Being that they changed the law again, unless I can get one of the first 500 registered custom car titles handed out every year, my car will have to be registered as a 1978 thereby making it subject to emissions testing. Does a l28et with 440's and 3in exhaust and no cat have any remote possibility to pass that test????? I'm sure the biggest thing is getting the afr correct, but without a cat i dunno? Also, are there any cali guys out there that know a way around this? Could I register the car as a custom car in Michigan, and then have the title transfer over as a custom built car in California? I really don't want to have something as dumb as emmsions keep me from owning my dream car.... HELP!!!!
  3. Happy Thanksgiving HybridZ. Be safe!
  4. I think this is an awesome idea. You could have it broken down into the same categories we have now, 4cy,6cy,8cy, other, with various sub sections. Then organize the current stickies as wiki pages. It would basically make a how to for different builds and different modifications using example work from people's builds throughout the years. How cool would it be to have a walk-through on how to make any modification that has been done on this site. Awesome. Now just convince people to do it....thats a ton of time.
  5. Hey guys, In my spare time I operate a small recording studio, and with so many technology changes over short periods of time I end up buying and selling gear online all the time. In the last six months it seems every online posting I make for equipment for sale gets responses from scam artists. One of my favorite things about being a member of this site is that there is a definite sense of community, and people know each other a little better than other forums with hot shots bragging about their new neon interior lights and splash graphic stickers on their gigantic spoiler(good for an easy 50 hp). Anyhow, This is a good article I found that fits with the scam I get offered up pretty regularly. Hopefully, it doesn't show up in our classifieds section, but if it does at least we should be aware of it. here is the link: http://www.used-car-advisor.com/car-buyer-scam.htm Happy building, driving, racing, and spending, spending, spending.
  6. I've seen intakes set up like that before. The benefit gained from the colder air outweighs the length of the pipe. I wouldn't worry about it.
  7. Why do I get the feeling, that with all those forged parts sitting in your truck, "Accidentally" blowing your engine might have happened on purpose. haha.
  8. there are a couple people that have tried this route, one who almost marketed it as a kit, there is just limited demand for such a kit. If you do a search you will find lots of info about what and how you need to mkae this dream happen. Consider budget. You must have a lot of money if you are considereing fabbing up your own design, manifold, the charger itself, injectors, a rebuild w/new pistons, etc. this is a big project. I would ask yourself, What are my speed goals, how much do i have to spend, do I want to be unique and faster, or just faster, and do I have the means to do this? If you can get through those q's and you still wana do the charger, this forum will support you all the way on you conquest, if not, read up, people have done it all here. Good Luck.
  9. I looked into this for a while. its a fun little engine if it is built properly. There have been problems with crank walk when you get around 325hp but its avoidable by getting forged internals. Otherwise, about the the trans, mighty max is all you got for a straight bolt on. There is a guy who matted a 4863t to a toyota five speed and put it in a rock crawler out west, and there is info out there that provides info that would could lead to you places that have made bellhousing adapters for such a swap. If patience, time and money, anrent an issue, Id love to see this swap done. Here is a link to that guys swap in the rock crawler. http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73227&highlight=RWD+4G63
  10. WRX engines are fun and 300 out of the box is nice, but,,,,they start to fall apart at 375, unless your really careful. meaning your gonna have to buy an expensive engine and completely rebuild it with stronger parts becuase we all have boost addictions and will never be satisified without adding one more psi. Which I know would be a shortside for me. Otherqwise, what would you do about trans options. the car is wider and shorter and there isnt a tranny i know thats only rwd. Maybe im wrong. Maybe you could adapt another trans to work. But the awd setup would require rediculous fabrication, and budget. But, if you could get around those obsticles it would be pretty cool. I would be jealous for sure.
  11. My buddy has a modded 4.0 sahara. The thing is an animal from 0-60 but thats about it. He is also running 4.10 gears, and jeeps are bricks with wheels. But still, I cant see a jeep I6 in a z being worth the cost to do it. But thats my opinion, I think it would be creative to see built, and interesting to ride in. I dont think anyone's done it, its bound to happen sometime.
  12. Go to the turbo section under engine componets and read the turbo faq sticky at the top of the forum. This will give you alot of info if you are going in the turbo route. Also do a search, there is a ton of valuable information. The stock turbo was a t3 and the engine puts out around 180hp and 200lbs of torque. Welcome to the page, always search before you ask, its most likly been covered before. Good luck with the swap.
  13. looks cool, i'll be curious to see what it does for the performance of the engine. When you crunch out all the numbers your losing 1.73 total pounds of piston which is .28 pounds per piston. Looks cool. Hope they have some durability, that would be cool.
  14. Yes and no. Its the kind of thing where you are upping your displacement by very few cc's. With the maybe 100cc's gained your talking about less than a 15hp gain. I think the regular l28 setup is about 2780 (estimate) and if you change the crank and rods it puts you at about 2850 (estimate). Do a search, someone on this site has a displacment calculator with tons of potential combinations that you can select rods, pistons, blocks, cam, etc.. Regardless, if you are going to take your whole engine apart to get a little bit more displacment you might as well get it bored out and go all the way to 3.0 or 3.1. But thats my oppinion, so take it as a grain of salt.
  15. do a search. there is tons of info on this site.
  16. who cares about the legality. No cop is gonna pull you over and ask to see whats under the hood. Most cops dont know thier a** from thier elbow about cars. My buddy has a police scanner and we play drinking game to the stupid stuff cops say over the radio. Most police officers will say "in pursuit of white sport compact" and then get the make and model completly wrong. It's funny. Also, your gonna have to get pulled over for them to be suspicious in the first place, so then you desreve to get sited. I dont know of any "legal engine inspector police" that cruise the local neghborhoods monitoring engine builders of america. 90% of the cars on this site are not street legal. As long as you are smart about when and where you want to drive like a maniac, all is well. There are ways to get around things. So build away.
  17. What is the current status of this project, I know that people were getting closer months ago and then the post dissapeared. I hope it hasnt died. Give us all and update!
  18. If you plan on dragging the car, and using it only for the strip you should consider using a air/water IC. Basically you would use a second radiator, and water pump to circulate the water trough the system. Since your just draging the car you can use an Ice Tank, and that would drop your temps dramatically. It's pricey and not good for the street, but these issues dont come into play with what you trying to do. Otherwise, if youve made 400 before, im sure that 500 is in your realm of possibilty. Talk to Alex Costa, he could figure a lot of the details out for you.
  19. Why hasnt anyone attempted to use a cintrifigual supercharger on an l6. They arent as bluky as classic superchargers and can be made to make far more than 20lbs of boost. I am assuming that cost and praticality is the reasoning, but it would make a interesting dyno thats for sure.
  20. I looked throught the forum for about an hour. It seems like the general concensus is that this would make a good daiey driver. I figure you turn the boost up with a smaller pulley and some basic mods, youd be closer to 250, 260 and the engine and mods required owuld be under 1200 dollars. The wiring would prolly suck, and fabbing mounts for the engine and transmission would be needed, but other than that it sounds good. Why hasnt anyone done this swap? I am puzzled.
  21. I realized that put pobiac instead of pontiac. I feel like a retard. Any thoughts though? I'm going to do more research.
  22. I know people have talked about these engines, but has anyone done this swap. The engine would be out of a bonneville or monte carlo, they also have them in the buick rivera and can be had for 400-500 dollars with hardly any miles on them. The make 240hp and can be converted to use a t5 with a belhousing adapter. I also know that they have a weak bottom end, but if you were planning for no more than 300hp, i dont see the issue, and instead see a low cost swap. Let me know what you think, i have become curious.
  23. I am new to the idea of the 302 and I like then engine. I know a guy who has a turbo 5.0 stang and its perfect for the street. Enough torque low end to be fun, but balsy when the turbo hits. Needless to say i think it would be awesome. Does anyone have mounts for the 302 swap, and if so, would a tubo application be possible in a gen1 z. I did a search, and there is very little on this. Help me out.
  24. do a search,, youll find a ton of stuff
  25. i suppose the better question to ask is, what kind of power you want to make and where you want to make it in your powerband. To me, high compression turbos are kinda silly, because you cant maximize the potential of a boosted engine that only allows you to have 7psi, and under 250rwhp. Equally with that high of compression, tunig on a turbo would be a task, and although it is relativly easy to slap on a turbo, you are going to run into bigger issues than you would doing a cam upgrade. My advise is to do the cam, or save up and do a stroker. You wont get as much as you would a turbo, but it saves you headache. If you want to go turbo, get an l28et with a p90, and boost the hell out of it. It all depends on what you want, do a search, there are people who have done it.
