  1. do a search, people have done it. You can make the swap onto the current setup you already have. But, you would have to upgrade your fuel pump, get the new efi, turbo headers, new intake, on higher compression you'd need an intercooler, above all that if you have more than 9:1 compression than you wont be able to run more than 7psi. And, even if you had an amazing tune it would be difficult to achieve mroe than 250rwhp, which is fun, but if your gonna spend the money to get it there with that set up, buy a f54 p90 and put the same into it and you'll be able to go much further. Also the f54 p90 combination use the some engine mounts. Id jsut do the whole engine swap, especially if your going to rebuild later on, just buy a turbo block and rebuild that. hope that helps.
  2. I too am currently tyring out the acetone. It makes my exaust smell like paint thinner, but hey, im pretty sure that im getting far better gas milage. Ive already gone the distance i normally do with a full tank and have about 1/8 of a tank to go. Im guessing i'll get another 3-5 miles to the gallon.
  3. there is a guy in australia that makes adapter plates. i think he made a turbo suzuki sidekick with a rwd 4g63 in it. He used a toyota transmission. You can find toyota surpa tranny swaps for the 4863 if you get the adaptor plate. I also stumbled upon a place that has toyota bellhousings for the swap. Id say thats your best bet for a strong tranny thats upgradable and rwd. I thought about doing this swap for along time, seemed like it would be unique and have a lot of potntial, but other than that, useless. Another thing you run into is flipping the intake manifold around becuase the intake points at the firewall when made rwd. But you seem like fabbing up a custom intake isnt a problem. If you can do the swap, rock on. Avoid the might max, they break at 300hp, and why spend all the money if you wont even have 300 reliable. ill see if i can find that site for ya. Good luck
  4. sooner or later someone always finds this site and posts it. You would have to do lots oof body modification in a car with that powerplant. Ther problem isnt the hp it makes, but the tq at low rpm. You would make a z look like a twizler with that engine in it. Granted if you have the money to put that in a car, reinforcing your frame shouldnt be an issue. I like the indy engine that he has made streetable. That would be a fun car to drive around.
  5. bolt in a z31 engine, and you have your single turbo. Itd be way easier
  6. I dont know what to think. If its true than its amazing. I would however be worried about deterioration of parts. I know that the guy says that acetone doesnt damage any parts, but, I think it would be all the lines and hoses i would worry about. Coming from personal expierence, with potato guns, which is funny, i would use acetone as a fueling agent. It would shot the sh!t out of an apple. I shot one almost 250 yards once. However, the acetone slowly ate away at the pvc piping, and my cannon eventually exploded on firing it. I had previously used all sorts of fuels and had no such problem. Granted PVC and fuel lines are completly different, but i look at plastic as plastic and would be a little worried about long term use. On the plus side, i suppose its just like running alcohol. It might casue some problems if you dont monitor your parts, but if you maintain your vehicle its no problem. Im gonna try it out in my little saturn and see what the fuel gains are cause im curious. But I dunno, Id need to see some documentation before i put it in a z consistently.
  7. I'm on the same page with violaclef, I really appreciate everyone responding,,, hopefully we can find out how high someone can go with a good tune and a fair ammount of boost.
  8. Alright boys, i wasnt questioning the ability to run a lower octane on a larger engine. Rather I was saying that any high performance car will need a higher octane. Not to say that the hemi, or the sierra have weak engines, however, they arnt engines you consider to be high performance. When i hear serra truck, performance engine are not the words that come to mind. Point being, i wanted to see what kind of fuel people had to use based on thier different setups. Thankyou for the information though.
  9. solabarics are really nice. My buddy has 3 12's in his explorer and they pound. Hes running over 1000 watts to them. When they hit it almost feels like wind s getting knocked out of you. I dont understand the necessity to having that much power, but it is kinda cool none the less. And they're square, which is cool.
  10. I suppose my questioing behind this is how much money it will cost every time i fill up. What I have found is that any engine that produces more than 250 hp needs premium gas, or a higher level of octane regardless of v8 or l6. Thanks for the info those of you who posted.
  11. anyone else put gas in there car,,,just kiding thanks I was hoping for a bigger number of respnces thats all.
  12. I was curious to see what octane gas people run with their boosted z's at different boost levels. Hopefully I can get a good feel of what kind of money it will cost me for gas at differnt setups. Granted i understand that bigger injectors/supplementary injectors and different turbo's all equate different numbers, but regardless of the combination, id be curious to see what people use.
  13. the gnz will be more expensive. I love the swap, but i also love manual trans, something you cant have in a gnz. It just doenst blend well with the 3.8. If your looking for simple the l28et is your best bet. Ya, it wont generate as much power as the gn, but 300 can be achieved with a t3/t4, an intercooler, a bov, 3 in exaust and downpipe, better fuel pump, bigger injectors-good to have, and possibly an upgrade to the fuel system. I know it seems like a lot, but it all bolts on and can be had for under 3 grand. Buy the engine and start bolting things on. thats my .02. I do love the gnz though. Brad
  14. I looked into the VG swap for a while. I knew a guy that was putting down 450hp on pump gas in a 80's 300zx.There is a problem however, with the steering shaft. The engine fits no problem, but you run right into the steering shaft, meaning you will have to not only create custom mounts for the build, but you will also have to re route the steering mechanism to a different location. This doesnt seem like to big of a deal, but it does it surley is a PITA that makes the build seem to take forever. But really, do what you want. Both swaps a unique and have high potential.
  15. your feedback is awesome everyone. I looked around and saw that this had been disscussed elsewhere as well as this site, but i hadnt officially seen anyone do it or at least say they could. Id love to do the swap if i had the time and money. I suppose i will have to do it further down the road. I know that the sr20 swap would make a little more sence, but i think that the mitsu engine is a unique little powerplant that has readily available parts and is easily come by. The link that leads to the adaptor plate is a really cool site. I think im gonna talk to some people and see what they think. maybe in couple years ill have a 4g63t powered z to add on this site. P.S. the crank walk pictures are hilarious.
  16. Has anyone done a mitsu swap before. I dont think ive ever seen it done. So i looked around a bit and found a guy who made a rwd samurai rock crawler with a 4g63t. He custom made an adaptor plate that would line up with any toyota rwd tranny. I know that this engine has been rumopred of having troubles with crank walk at high hp, but for about 300hp it seems like it would be an interesting swap. Check out his site. Id love to see someone start this build. http://rz-products.com/WAYNE/UPDATES/UPDATES.HTML
  17. Ive looked around at various GN forums and there are always a couple guys that have tried or at least ran for a little while a set-up with a manual transmission. None of them do it becuase on the GN setup the automatic can hook up better and overall has better power perfomance. There are some however that do feel that there is little lost by using a manual transmission. My question is, Is it possible in a z. I know scottie and a couple others are running GN's under their hood, and I love the power and potential potential the buick has, but I would want a manual trans. I think sports cars that are driven, not dragged, should have a 5 speed,,,,just my feelings, not to say one is better than the other. I found a website that has bellhousing transfer kits, and one goes to a ford T-5, is that all you would need? . Give me some knowlege on this one.
  18. Scottie, Thanks for enlighting me on the quality of the system. It seems like you are quite on the ball with everything. Sorry if I came accross as flagrant, i simply wanted to put on the table the potential risks i had found when doing research. Lemme know what kind of numbers your putting down with all that boost.
  19. http://www.aquamist.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13 check the forum for other peoples input too. Again i understand water/alcohol is a benificial and wonderful way to cool intake temprature effectivly increasing boost potential, but this link is a perfect example. I dont like having to take stuff out, check it, clean it, buy additonal monotoring devices, worrying about hose failures becuase alcohol eats at the pump and hoses, etc... The point is, the concept is simple, but traditionally effective systems require far more than what you listed above. Just read around on this forum, all these people talk about having to be regularly involved in maintaing thier systems. Which is good, it would definetly force you to have a perfectly running ahine al the time, I just dont have that much time, and I was simply bringing that information to light.
  20. Not trying to start a war, no need to be hostile. All i was trying to say is that I dont like doing constant tuning and checks on my parts. Granted if the car is simply for runs on a track than I fully understand becuase even at 100 runs of 12 seconds thats only 2 minutes or driving time. So i understand that i may be a bit of a pussy, and maybe if all i used a car for was racing it, then it wouldnt be a problem, alas that is not my situation. Equally, i suppose that if all i used a car for was racing,,, than tuning it, pushing it, blowing it up, and starting all over again on a regular basis would make perfect sence so I wouldnt challeng you at all. I didnt mean to challenge water, it just that things do break, i wouldnt want it to happen on the road. But more power to ya, as scottie put me in my place, i am a pussy, and i think thats cool.
  21. If youre going with water or alcohol, in my oppinion you are entering an eventual engine melt down. If you driv eyour car on a regular basis thats too much time for something to go wrong with the managment system or hoses or any part of the complexity that is that system. And if it does fail, then you'll be running so much boost your gonna blow everything apart. But,,Thats assuming something goes wrong. Im too big of a panzy to ever do it, but if you want lotsa boost and big numbers, it is an effective way to do it. Im not knocking water or alcohol, im just to scared to ever break it and the car. But rock on for being ballsy.
  22. hey I found this kit, comes with everything you can imagine, i dont know if everything is forged or not, i cant imagine it would be for 650. But it makes me wana call them and check. http://www.rpmrons.com/Nissankits.html
  23. Hey do a search, I've never heard of that engine, but i dont know much about skyline history. What kind of car do you have, if you have a gen1 z then it boils down to a couple of factors in my eyes. If you are going for a setup that doesnt require much besides bolt on parts that will put you in the 300-325 hp a rebuilt l28et swapped in with t3/t4, IC, tb, BOV, exaust/downpipe, fuel managment and standalone ECU will do fine, and parts will cost you under 6 grand. If you want more out of it youd need to start getting forged internals for safty, i know some guys are putting down near 400 on stock internals but you gotta have an amazing tune and even then it may be unstable for a long period of time. The RB series will allow you to have huge power potential, equally the sr20det, however the sr lacks torque. But both engine platforms can be built upwards 500 hp before things need modification internally. The thing with the rb is that it costs 5 grand to get a half cut, then you have to modify the oil sump, and get custom motor mounts. If you are a good welder, and have the money, do the RB. You will be part of a select few and will have a 400 hp z in no time once you get the engine in the car. Above all, do searches on this site, and read up on what others have done, you will find many frineds on this sit that can guide you in the right direction. Good Luck
  24. there are lots of good people to help you with this site. Read up as much as you can,,above all do searches. Odds are there have been more than one person who will be doing what your doing, or encountered somthing you will, so read up and do a search. Turbos are a fun thing to get into, espicially on the rb platform, if you do it right you could build that car to haul serious butt. here are some good links to get you started, they might not all apply to your case, but they will give you a good understanding. newbie information http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/turbo/turboinfo.html'>http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/turbo/turboinfo.html really good site- http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/turbo/ turbo maps http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/turbo/turbomaps/
  25. I heard from reading around that the VQ is not a very stable engine. The block basically falls apart at about 400 hp, which makes me sad. That means after you drop in a new ecu and fuel managment, bigger injectors, bigger turbo, intercooler, exaust, BOV, downpipe, and TB, you gonna have to gut the engine too, new rings, new pistons, new cam, new crank, new gaskets,,which equals lotsa moneys. I had hoped that with new technology and what not it would have similar strength to the rb series, alas it does not. There was a drift team i saw that had taken the vq out of a 350z and replaced it with a highly modified sr20det. The car put out 550hp and granted the bloack and rings and everything was forged and bullet proof, but they said for the price it would have taken to build a similar engine on th vq would have cost far more. Also youd have to build it bigger becuase it wieghs so much. I think for the money needed to make one of those haul a## it isnt worth it, but if you want to give it a go, i respect the hybridz mentality, do something different.
