  1. Previously I posted about building a new engine for my 280Z http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=30446&highlight=stroker+305 but I had to shift my finances for the time being (building a house this summer). I have the engine out of the car and stripped down to bare block (305) and it is heading into the shop in the next couple of days. The question running around in my head is stroke or not to stroke. I have the while I'm at it disease. I'm not looking into going into roller rockers, forged components, or anything too pricey, just a couple things to step up the performance. I'm thinking of a 10:1 compression ratio, porting my heads, and maybe a more aggressive stroke. I don't mind spending a few extra hundred dollars here and there in the name of more power, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time and money. BTW when I opened my block I found parts dating to '93 in a '85 block, so it has been rebuilt once, and I still have to figure out what's stock.
  2. For some reason the bronze with the orange seems like it would look good, or maybe that's just me thinking that the bronze would look good with all the oxidation on my paint
  3. The Z is not a daily driver, and to this date in time has never been on the track. Its primary use is simply a toy for right now. Would I like to get the car on the track someday, yes. It will be driven on country roads, city streets, and someday the track. I seriously doubt that these will be the last set of rims I put on this car, I'm just not ready to do the body yet (hence the original paint). The car has been a toy it's entire life, it had 68k on the odometer (unrolled) before it got its first V8. So to make a long story short, these rims are primarily for the street, but the weight and strength are the two most important things on my list.
  4. The Z is Orange (still has original factory paint) and will stay orange. The reason I'm getting rims now is because I have wear half way up the tires on my 14" stock and I'm afraid I'm ging to roll a bead. So the 16" is the min, and performance is #1 on my list, so 17" is the max. But yea Black, bronz, or white would look sweet. Looks are #2.
  5. I'm looking at 3 different rims for my '78 280z. I have not made up my mind 100% yet, so what are your opinions? KONIG 17" w/adaptors (honda) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2462876793&category=6763 PANASPORT 16" http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2462878344&category=6763 Team Dynamics 17" (thanks iskone) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43957&item=2462798084 I know they are running slightly different prices, and they are all slightly diferent breeds of rims. Just currious what opinions you guys have.
  6. I've had 2 '86 MR2's loved them both. Wish I never sold the 1st one. That car is on my someday list. It's an oversized gocart, it's also the car that gave me the love for cars.
  7. Yea I had to raise up the rear diff a little and the raise the suspension a lil to make it a perfect line across, but still when I squat on launch the angles go bad again. So far the best thing I have been able to find are the brute foce.
  8. What brand/style U-joint do you use/recommend in the half shafts of the R200 rear end? I'm asking because I seem to go through a set every year and have broken one once. Thanks in advance.
  9. 03 Civic Si 2 or 3 Primered Civics (they are fun to pick on but never seem to go away) 80's Vett a couple F body's 3 Stangs a lightning My fav was running with a lightly built 300ZX (more playing than anything) Had my @ZZ handed to me by a WS6 w/ built 450hp block, I accually had him till 3rd gear when suddenly *poof* he was gone. Damb 150 shot!
  10. I'm a newbie on this board (even though I have been driving a sbc 280Z for two years), and I would have given half my tools to know of this site before then. The point is (yes it has been said) we were all once newbies, and the joy of a internet forum is the collection of knowledge. We have all made $$$ mistakes when building these cars, if I were to do it again I could save plenty of green stuff. The joy of this is learning from each others mistakes. Yes it is sooo annoying when you get the general questions of "what is best" this question is flattery some complete stranger is going to look at your car and assume that you have all the knowledge needed to answer the questions in their head. The point is they need direction, but they need to know WHAT they want. Most of these questions deserve answers of personal preference not exact diagrams. Hell if there were one answer to what is the best engine to shove in a Z there would be no need for this form. We are pushing the limits of this platform in every direction and some of us have found it's limits, and some of those limits are expensive to find. I would love to know what is the torque limit is of the R200 rear end and unibody are. If I cross the threshold of the unibodies limits, there is no going back, there is only "well I need a new chassis. I'm getting ready to take my car to the next level, and that involves something that has become a hot topic in the Chevy forum, turbo V8. I am enjoying the updates of the progress so far and hope to apply what has been learned to my Z next year. In the mean time I'm building the engine to handle the forced induction and play with some laughing gas (I'm thinking of a 200hp fogger plumed under the intake manifold). I by no means have anything ground breaking done on my car in comparison to what is out there, or what has been done on this board. But I'm learning allot from you guys and I still have allot to learn, so I'm a noob. Besides you should see the type of automotive ignorance I have to deal with on a daily basis running a quick lube
  11. http://cgi2.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=d2u102702 Well his feedback tells a story. If you're looking for a small hidden spray you could go with a Sneaky Pete or plumb it all under the intake manifold (I've been debating on this with hiding the bottle in the spare tire carrier).
  12. The idea behind building the power in the higher rpm, is to relieve the corkscrewing stresses on the chassis. The higher rpm would also help keep the turbo spooled, and help the lighter car hook up on launch off the line. I have never built an engine, but I know enough to surround myself with those who know what they're doing (I learn better with the hands on). I'm hoping to have a better understanding of it before it gets torn into. Where are the holes in my line of thing here? Thanks guys for all the info so far.
  13. Not a bad idea (duh) I'll have to give that a try. Heck I could have done that last night without the dry ice, it was -2* before windsheild. brr
  14. Earlier this winter I peeled back the carpet in my '78 280Z to find gobs and gobs of black tar??? The car is undercoated and I think this was a really really bad way of rust proofing this Z. Any suggestions on how to remove/strip out the 10-20 lbs of tar that's under my carpet? Any help on this would really be appreciated. Thanks
  15. First off, Hi my name is Josh and I'm an alco… oops wrong board. You start things off with a joke right? Ok the fun part. I've spent the better part of the day, reading through the forums and trying to use the search function (I found a couple things I was looking for). And all I have to say is "nice". There are some really nice Z's in here with people that know what there doing. I look forward to picking your brains and hopefully contributing something myself. Oh yea my question. I have a 1978 Datsun 280Z, currently I have a 305csb/T-5 combo. I have been running this combination for two years and it's time to something more to the car. I'm debating on destroking a 350 with a 305 crank, and running forged components. I would like to run this combination for a year to "break" in the engine, and then go with forced induction and fuel injection. My goal is a high revving low torque V8. Dose this sound like a step in the right direction for my goal? Secondly I'm curious on what the power limits are on the R200 rear end and the frame. Sorry to make this so long winded, any ideas, criticism, or flaming is welcome. Thank you
