If you have to do it all over again....
Mikelly replied to jbuenviaje's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Having experienced a wide range of truly amazing sports cars... It boils down to what you choose to do with your time and what interests you. For me, the answer is absolutely not. I've regreted building this car more times in the last few years and feel like it's lighting a match to money every time I have yet another hurdle to overcome, like right now... I'll have a $4K repair bill with my tuner by the time all is said and done "whenever" I get the car back... Went from "bleed the clutch and de-bug the FAST EFI" to "troubleshooting an oil pressure issue" (faulty distributor), re-wiring some of the car, and now dropping the trans to troubleshoot why the clutch pedal won't travel the full length it should. This, ontop of an "EFI" upgrade of $3500, along with new CCW wheels at $3200, new flywheel at $300, and new battery at $150. I look at the list of parts and associated dollars spent and think of the cars I could have "enjoyed" doing what they're supposed to be intended to be used for... DRIVING them. I want to get in my track/street/fun/weekend car and DRIVE it. I don't want to have to be an expert on every type of part, nut or bolt, to chase a pipe-dream of maximum performance in such an old platform. If you're an engineer, or if you love a challenge and want to tinker and tweak to your hearts content, this is absolutely the platform for you... Me, I look at it as the one I held onto much much to long. Got I miss my 996TT! Mike -
Oil pressure, temperature, starvation for road race duty
Mikelly replied to bjhines's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Bringing this back from the dead as I believe I'll be dealing with this very issue soon. BjHines I'll be bending your ear. Right now I have nothing on the exhaust side, and only have a PCV valve running up to the airbox on the passenger side and the driver's side running an air tube over to an AllStar catchcan with breather. I don't think it'll be sufficient based on what I've read here. Oil won't be an issue for me with the setup I have, but I will heed Coffey's advice and run my oil temp sensor after the cooler inline away from the pan. Mike -
It runs off a pickup on the driveshaft. Pulls time when it detects lack of load. Should have it on track by the end of March, beginning of April. Mike

Latest update... The car should be done and tuned, dyno'ed and ready for pick up by Thursday morning. There were some serious issues surrounding the fitment of the distributor that required serious work to it. Traction control is installed and everything else is being buttoned up now... Mike

Did I mention I'm dying to get this thing back? Spent yesterday mounting some Corbeau CR1 Seats in the BMW. Also mounted a Sparco harness bar that is a "universal" type deal. Will probably come out... Anyway, I need to get the 295-30-18s in for the rear so I can have those mounted up to the CCws. Can't wait to get that all mounted up and the car out for a little test and tune! Thing is going to be visually stunning. Mike

The car is on hold waiting for the traction control hardware. Should get it back next week. Mike

I'll let you guys know... There are three individuals interested in the car, so who knows... If a serious buyer is going to pony up to buy the car, it will go. Otherwise, I'll continue to develope the car as we can... Mike

BjHines, pics of the efi are back on Page 17. Tedder, I'm actually going to put it in A2 if I keep it. We'll find out what worked and what didn't. As that plan comes together I'll post more info and see if anyone else wants to piggyback and share the cost/time in the facility. Mike

So they've had it for all of a day and they have everything done except that they have no injector function. They pulled the injectors and are going to check their flow and function... Probably have the car back by the weekend at the rate they're going!! Mike

Dropped it off with EB3 today. Was a BIG hit at the shop and in the surrounding businesses. I shoulda taken some pics of it in the sunlight... Really freaking hot with the new rear spoiler! Mike
-
Dave, I sure didn't... Busy day trying to get the car wrapped up to send off to the tuner.. David, Like minds think alike. I can't wait until I get the tires mounted up on the CCWs and can get the whole package out in the light for some shots! Mike

Decided to change up on the rear hatch... Really big props to the guys at http://www.zccjdm.com/catalog.php/azcarbum/dt43198/Datsun_A_Series_Engine_Parts_ This rear 5 inch spoiler is amazing! Loading it in the car trailer for tomorrow's drop off with EB3...

The car is going to a shop on Tuesday. EB3 Motorsports previously did the dyno tuning on the car with the carb in place. I'm taking the car to them, since they sold me on using the FAST product. I'll get the car buttoned up this weekend and loaded up into the car trailer. I know some guys aren't going to understand this. This is a DIY site, afterall. However, my strengths, my priorities, and my desire to wrap this project up are driving this decision. It's no different than hiring a trash service or lawn care. At this point I just need the car done so I can start the task of shaking it down at the track or selling it to its new owner... Mike

Didn't get anything accomplished on the car yet this weekend... Mike

Wheels are 11.5X18 rear with 5 3/8th. I have coil overs and shaved perches. Fronts are 10X18 with 5inch backspacing. Thanks Man! Someone will enjoy the attention to detail and amount of money spent when it finally goes on sale! Mike

Underside of the car is buttoned back up and now I'll start focusing again on the wiring for the fuel injection and try to troubleshoot the issues with signal/spark/fuel blah blah blah... Mike

Kinda in the same boat after selling my heavily modified 911 Turbo and missing it withing WEEKS... Some issues I coped with that you might want to consider... On the 911 Turbo, When you do something to "fix" an issue, you tend to "upgrade". A simple $1800-2200 fixm, to most people with the 996TT. In my case of the transmission with a bad 2nd gear syncro, it ended up with a full PMNA race trans build that ended up being $11300 for the internals, a guards transmission, a new Clutchmasters clutch setup, all the GT3 components for the clutch hydraulics, shifter/cables... Got a little out of hand... Then there's the consumables... Those large brembo rotors are cool, until you have to buy new pads to the tune of $300 per AXLE. Attention is a double edged knife. Idiots are attracted to nice cars as well as cool people. Some of those idiots will want to harm your car... Replacement fenders/doors/bumpers can really hamper the cost of insurance and if you track it, Like I did, you'll be thinking about those replacements every time the car wants to step out on you in a corner... or on an off ramp or back road, or when that deer just happens to hop out in front of you... Windshield replacements... make sure the cost doesn't exceed your insurance companies coverage... I've actually looked at the GTR lately and I'd get a 2010 or newer if I were serious about it... I'm also looking at Newer Porsches and older Ferrari, as well as the newer C6Z06/Grandsports... Lots of nice rides out there for the money. Don't get in too deep and don't buy anything that is in a hard to unload color/options. I always approach anything I buy with the intention of selling it one day... so keep that in the back of your head, whatever you do. Happy shopping!

Made progress over the last two days... WElded in a new 02Bung and installed a solid trans mount... I have to reinstall the exhaust and fill the trans with fluid and I'll be ready to get back to the EFI troubleshooting... Gotta order rear tires... Mike
-
oh, that. Yes, after talking with them for months, we decided that the lm20 was worth the extra few bucks for the durability' over the classic race wheel. I will put them on a scale to get exact weights before they are mounted up with tires. Mike
-
Garvice I don't understand the term "street" Specification. They're custom made based on the backspacing and the measurements from inner strut tube to outter fender lip. Mike
-
Pete, It was in the retainer. I went ahead and sealed it up with black magic. I expect to have the car completely back together and at the tuners for troubleshooting, tuning and being DONE by the week of the 27th!

The anodized coating is amazingly durable... Love the look and can't wait to mount up my Hoosiers!!! And because I know some will ask.. 10X18 front and 11.5X18 rear... From the rear From the front Rear Side View Front Side View Other shots White specs on the pics are from the foam packing...

They arrived today!!

The lightweight flywheel, clutch/pressure plate/bellhousing and transmission are back in place, along with the driveshaft and trans crossmember. I'll wrap up the rest over the next few days. UPS plans to deliver the wheels tomorrow... Mike
-
Dave, I just got notice that they've shipped tonight... I'd expect to see them by Monday/Tuesday time frame. So over the last two days I managed to get the trans out, the light weight flywheel swapped, and diagnose the leak. Happy to report it's def. the transmission and not the rear main or oil pan. I'll resolve this issue tomorrow. Making progress! Mike
